“Stop that.” a quiet, scolding whisper rang out across the room, catching Rosie’s full attention.
“Stop what?” The younger girl frowned, folding her arms across her chest.
“Fidgeting.” Her co-worker, Sophie fired back quickly before she motioned to the two way mirror in front of them. “Now pay attention or we will miss something.”
“I am not fidgeting.” Rosie grumbled under her breath as she turned back towards the mirror, watching for a few moments as their boss continued to interrogate the men in the next room. However the scene didn’t have her attention for long as her brown eyes were wandering towards the clock on the wall once more.
Sophie sighed, reaching forward and yanking the younger woman's head back towards the scene in front of them.
“Pay attention.” The medic reiterated, the frustration evident in her tone.
“How much longer is this going to take?” Rosie grumbled, kicking at the floor like an impatient child.
“You got somewhere to be?” Sophie asked almost sarcastically, rolling her eyes as the younger woman nodded furiously. “More important than this? This is your job.”
“So much more important than this.” Rosie said, grinning as she caught the look of annoyance on her co-workers face. Thankfully the interrogation seemed to draw to a close very quickly after that, and as soon as Audrey had re-entered the room, Rosie was heading for the door.
“Uh, where are you going?” Her boss asked her as she pulled the blood covered latex gloves off of her hands. “We still have paperwork to do!”
“I will do it later!” Rosie replied, ducking past the older woman and racing out of the door into the hallway. The medic, who was left standing alone in the room, just shared a look with their boss, shaking her head slowly.
“I think we need to give her back to Valeria.”
“She’s good at her job Sophie, that's all that matters.”
Rosie on the other hand was running full speed towards her locker, not even stopping as she nearly ran head first into multiple doors. She was late, and she was never late for these kinds of things. Rosie would have been on time had Audrey and Sophie let her handle the interrogation like they usually did, but they said they wanted to take their time today… whatever that meant.
The young girl burst into the locker room, throwing her locker open and rummaging around through everything inside before she finally got her hand on her phone. Rosie tapped the screen and let out a sigh of relief, seeing the numbers that popped up on her phone.
4:59 pm. She wasn’t late.
Well, she was by her own standards but thankful she still had a minute to spare before her phone lit up with her girlfriends phone number as soon as the clock hit five in the afternoon. It was their routine now and they never missed a call, Rosie had no idea what she would have done if she was actually late for the call.
Their different time zones made it so hard to find time where they could call one another without any interruptions or obligations getting in the way - this was their one hour - and Rosie wasn’t about to waste this waiting for someone to finish their long ass interrogation.
As soon as Nicole's name appeared on the screen of her phone she didn’t waste a single second before she tapped the answer call button. There was a small pause before the call finally connected, Nicole’s face finally appearing on the screen.
“Wow, that was fast.”
As soon as Rosie saw her and heard her voice again a sense of comfort and relief washed over her. Sure they had just talked the day before but she couldn’t help the way her heart ached the moment Nicole was out of her sight. The long distance was killing Rosie every single day.
“I just missed you.” The girl replied, shutting her locker with a rather loud bang.
“I missed you too.” Nicole replied, her voice coming through rather crackly due to the bad connection. But Rosie did not care, she still knew that was her girl on the other end of the phone. “You seem out of breath.” Nicole continued, studying her girlfriend through the phone. “Did you just run a race or something?”
“Something like that.” Rosie chuckled, walking out into the hallway. “We finally found some stray shadows today!”
“Oh yeah?” Nicole chuckled. “So you’ve had a productive day then?”
“Not really, they wouldn’t let me help!” Rosie sighed, breaking into a long ass rant about how she was sidelined all day when the one thing she was good at was extracting information from people! Thankfully her rant was cut short and she walked straight into a wall, distracted by her beautiful girlfriend and the rant she was currently spouting.
Nicole let out a small giggle.
“You okay?” She asked, her sweet voice cutting through the embarrassment Rosie felt building in her chest.
“I am fine.” Rosie sighed, admitting defeat as she turned and continued down the hallway. “What about you though Nic, how was your day?”
The pair continued to talk for the next hour, telling the other even the tiniest little things to try and keep the conversation going for as long as they could but sooner or later they had to say goodbye once again. Just like they always had to do.
“Hey, I’ve got to go.” Nicole hummed. “But I love you so much, and I’ll talk to you tomorrow, yeah?”
Rosie let out a sad sigh, sinking down into the pillows on her bed.
“I know, I know but we will be together again soon.” Nicole reassured the woman.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Rosie nodded slowly, smiling widely at her girlfriend.
“Okay, I love you too.”
And with that the call drew to a close, and they would have to wait for the next day to speak again. But Rosie loved this girl more than anything, so she was willing to do anything just to be in her life.
