Chapter 3 - Poker Face

After your meeting with the man you learned to be named Loki, you were scolded by the rest of the Avengers, for both getting out of bed so soon after your accident and coming so close to, as Stark put it, "psychopathic Rudolph".

You were moved to a hidden S.H.I.E.L.D. base after that, Steve insisting that it wasn't safe for you aboard an airship housing such a dangerous criminal. And, to his credit, he was right.

Shortly after you arrived at the new S.H.I.E.L.D. base, you received word that The Hulk, or Dr. Banner's 'alter ego' as it was explained to you, was released, resulting in the death of someone named Agent Coulson, and Loki's escape.

You heard whispers from passing guards and agents about what was happening at the time, but you never learned the full story of what happened until much later. In short, Loki had tried to take over New York with an army of something called the Chitauri, but had eventually failed, due to his "sheer stupidity and blatant lack of style" as Stark described.

You were introduced to Clint, who everyone explained was absent because he was under Loki's mind control during the time you were rescued by S.H.I.E.L.D.

In the time after the events of Loki's attempted takeover of New York, you worked alongside with the Avengers, trying to get a feel for your newfound powers. It took a while to learn the ropes, but eventually you were able to gain control and an understanding of the effects that HYDRA's twisted experiments had left on you.

Having nowhere else to go, you stayed with the Avengers in Stark Towers. Slowly, your makeshift family began to grow, including a metal bird, a glorified can opener, an emo witch and her Fitness Gram Pacer test twin brother, a toaster, and a spider boy.

Although it definitely wasn't traditional, this was the closest that you had ever had to a real family. There was something special about fighting the forces of evil and then immediately stuffing your faces with shawarma afterwards that you just couldn't explain.

Stark Towers, Present Day

"Ha!" You shout victoriously. "Flush beats straight. Hand em over," you demand to Pietro, who begrudgingly pushes his pile of snacks over to you.

"Wow!" Peter exclaims from his seat on the couch. "Miss Y/N just totally destroyed you guys."

"Not so fast, Y/N," Wanda speaks up. She flips over her cards onto the table, revealing her full house.

"WHAT THE FUCK?!?!" You shout in disbelief.

"HEY! LANGUAGE!" Steve shouts back from the kitchen.

"How the hell did you have a full house? You had to have cheated," you look up to Pietro, who nods in agreement.

"She definitely cheated."

"I did NOT cheat!" Wanda exclaims as Vision floats up behind her.

"According to my calculations, based off of the current hand that was played, it would have been impossible for you to have a full house," Vision confirms, earning a punch to the arm from Wanda and a victorious cheer from you and Pietro.

"See?" You shout. "Toaster-man wouldn't lie! You cheated, which means I won fair and square!"

"Ah, not so fast Y/N. That king of hearts in your hand is actually a two of spades," Vision declares, warranting another punch in the arm from you as your illusion was lifted, revealing the card previously thought to be a king of hearts into a mere two of spades instead.

"Dammit Vision! I was so close to winning!" You shout, as Pietro looks back and forth between you and Wanda.

"So that means that I won?!?" Pietro shouts in shock. You groan in defeat as Wanda shakes her head in disbelief.

"Remind me never to play poker with you two," Stark announces as he exits the elevator.

"Yeah, cause I would crush you easily. No magic needed. Anyways, what happened to 'spending the whole day down in the lab', Stank?" You shoot back sarcastically.

"Well, Maleficent," you roll your eyes at his nickname for you, "Banner and I finished up early in the lab, and we got a message from Point Break that he would be coming to visit."

"Thor's coming back?" You shout in excitement. Although you would never admit it, you had missed his loud voice and adorable confusion with 'Midgardian technology'.

"Do we have enough Pop-Tarts?" You ask, standing up to make your way over to the cupboard to check for any strawberry Pop-Tarts.

"When is he coming?" A voice in the vents asks, making Bruce and Pietro jump, while everyone else just laughs under their breath.

"Goddammit Legolas. Get your ass out of my vents!" Stark exclaims, exasperated.

"Language," Steve says calmly, not even bothering to look up from his cup of coffee as Clint pulls himself out of the vent and sits in the chair next to Steve.

"He should be arriving sometime today," Bruce chimes in, obviously not amused at Clint's theatrics either.

Just then, Sam and Bucky enter from the balcony. "Hey Tin-Can!" You shout to Bucky, using one of your many nicknames for him. Out of all of the Avengers, you were probably closest with Bucky, due to your shared past with an organization that can remain nameless. When Steve first introduced Bucky to the rest of the team, Bucky had a difficult time adjusting. Luckily, you were there to help him every step of the way. It took a little while for the soldier to warm up to you, but once he did, you both were inseparable.

"What's up, Violet Beauregarde?" He teases back, knowing you hate that nickname. With a flick of your hand, his knee buckles under him, and he has to grab onto Sam from falling over.

"Hey! Hands off dude! Don't damage the merchandise!" Sam shouts at him, pushing Bucky off of himself.

"It's not my fault! Y/N used her powers!" Bucky tries to argue back, but Sam already wasn't paying attention. You snicker, casting a mischievous glance in his direction.

"You better watch your back, L/N. I'll be coming for you when you least expect it," he glares playfully at you.

"Bring it on!" You taunt, but Bucky's attention no longer seems to be on you. Instead, he seems to be focused on the elevator.

"Hey? Buck? Do I have something on my face?" You tease, but he simply points to something behind you with his chin. As you turn to see what captured your friend's attention, you are met with a booming voice.

"LADY Y/N! HOW WONDERFUL IT IS TO FINALLY SEE YOU AGAIN!" The God of Thunder exclaims as he sweeps you up into a big bear hug.

"It's nice to see you too, Thor," you manage to breathe out as he nearly crushes your ribs in his embrace. "And don't call me Lady. Just Y/N is fine." You smile at him as he releases you from his grasp.

Before you can catch Thor up on what he had missed while on Asgard, you hear Tony's voice sneer behind you.

"What the hell is he doing here?"

You step to the side of Thor to see what Tony is talking about, and you are taken aback by who you see behind the God of Thunder. Loki.

You immediately conjure up one of your daggers, marching towards him and holding it at his throat. His eyes widen, but after a moment his mouth curves into a smile.

"Quite the welcoming party," he snickers arrogantly, only pissing you off more. You press the cool metal of your dagger closer to his throat.

"Y/N," you hear Cap's voice from behind you. "Give Thor a chance to explain."

You roll your eyes, but reluctantly lower your weapon after glaring at him for a few more seconds. Damn him for being so logical, you think to yourself.

"Try anything, and this ends up right through your heart," you threaten menacingly.

"How kind of you," he smiles smugly as you ball your fist at your side and march back over to Nat's side. She smirks as you huff and flick your hand once more, your weapon vanishing back to wherever it came from.

"You might still need that," she whispers to you, and when she sees the confused look on your face, she continues. "We need to have something on hand to cut all of the sexual tension between you and Prince Charming," she grins before earning a sharp elbow to her side.

"Shut it."
