Drum Island part 1
*With an Eternal Pose to Alabasta Kingdom, the Straw Hat Pirates resume their journey to return Princess Vivi to her home.*
Usopp: Guys, listen up! I will go to Elbaf someday! To the village of warriors!
Luffy: Yeah! Great!
Luffy and Usopp: ♫ Gi Gi Giant! Gi Gi Giants! ♫
♫ El-baf! El-baf! ♫
♫ Everyone is huge! ♫
♫ They’re so huge… because they’re giants… ♫
*Nami begins to feel hot as Luffy and Usopp sing and dance.*
Nami: Where do they get so much energy?
*They nearly fall into the water.*
Karoo: Quack!
Nami: Wow… After everything that’s happened here, I’m exhausted… Um, Vivi, could you watch this for me?
Vivi: Sure.
*She hands Vivi the Eternal Pose, as Nami is feeling exhausted.*
Nami: You’re on your way. Soon you’ll return to Alabasta. Well, my rosy outlook is assuming we can make it there safely and without any more surprises.
Vivi: Yes! I must return! It’s my obligation! I am the person everyone in the kingdom is counting on.
*Flashback*
Igaram: Believe me when I say it is the only way to save the kingdom! It is true that your father no longer has sway with the people. Our only hope of stopping this uprising is for you to tell them the truth! This is the only action that can save us. You have to understand that your survival is paramount. You must live, even if it means sacrificing others. Whether by grace or by betrayal, live on. No matter what! Sometimes… it’s harder to live… than to die.
*Flashback end*
Vivi: I will return home… alive.
Sanji: You’ll get home but there’s no need to push yourself so hard. You’ve got me! Here ya go. Try these sweets. They’ll help you relax. I’ve made some delicious tarts, and your offer of coffee or tea.
*He presents Vivi a tray of sweets.*
Vivi: Thank you.
*Morbius looks agitated.*
Morbius: Asshole…
*Luffy, Usopp and Karoo wish to have some.*
Sanji: Yours are in the kitchen! Now go!
*They run into the kitchen to have some snacks. Nami continues to feel disoriented.*
Zoro: 603! 604! 605! 606…!
*Zoro swings a large barbell that’s weighed on one side as an exercise.*
Zoro: Dammit all! If I only could’ve cut that wax! I wouldn’t have… left anyone hanging there! I’m so weak! If I’m gonna get stronger, I need to be able to slice through stuff like that from any stance!
*Meanwhile, on another island, a pirate ship with a swan figure head gets ready to sail.*
Pirate 1: Mr. 2! Bon Clay! The Swanda is ready to set sail!
???: Ok, ok, I heard ya, sheesh! Do you have to scream?! Honestly, somebody tell me one good reason why I should be the one to do this?! Mr. 3 is a piece of garbage! Go toss him out yourselves!
Pirate 2: That’s impossible! We wouldn’t even stand a chance against him!
Pirate 3: But you have to help! Those were the boss’s orders.
???: Un… deux… trois… Uh, what’s “four” again? Anybody? That 0. So much trouble.
*Back with the Straw Hats, Vivi watches the Eternal Pose as the ship sails.*
Nami: Vivi… I’m sorry, but, I…
Morbius: Are you ok, Nami?
Nami: I need to rest.
Vivi: I understand, Nami. Don’t worry, everything’s under control. I’ll keep an eye on our course.
*But Nami collapses on the floor.*
Morbius: Nami!
*Vivi feels her forehead to check her temperature.*
Vivi: You’re burning up!
*Morbius feels her temperature.*
Morbius: This isn’t good! She’s developing a fever!
Vivi: Hey, everyone! Come quick!
*Zoro stops working out while Luffy, Usopp, Sanji and Karoo exit the kitchen.*
Luffy: What’s wrong, Vivi? Are you ok?
Vivi: Nami has an awful fever!
Sanji: What?! Nami’s sick!
*Later, Vivi and Morbius attend to Nami below deck. Morbius uses a thermometer to check her temperature again.*
Morbius: That’s not good. She’s at 101.
Vivi: It’s most likely the climate. It’s quite normal. See, sailors in the open sea aren’t used to the strange weather and can become quite ill. There are countless stories of tough, notorious pirates who suddenly died. Their immune systems were attacked and ravaged by colds and fevers. Ignoring the symptoms can make even the slightest cold deadly.
*Sanji begins to cry over Nami being sick.*
Sanji: Nami!
Vivi: Is there anyone aboard this ship with even the slightest amount of medical experience?
*Luffy and Usopp point to Morbius*
Morbius: Why are you pointing at me!?
Luffy: You are “Doctor” Mitchel Morbius.
Morbius: Doctorates aren't always earned through medical experience! The word “Doctor” is a title given to people with the highest form of academic education! It doesn't always mean medical. There's philosophical, history and science doctors. And while I do know a bit of first aid, it only goes so far. My main field of expertise is biochemistry. I mostly studied how to cure the blood disease I was inflicted with as a child. Anything else outside of that is beyond my knowledge. And since I’m pretty certain Nami hasn’t shown any symptoms of the same disease I had, I don’t think I’m gonna be all that helpful in trying to get her better. Or at the very least giving an accurate diagnosis. We need a proper medical Doctor.
Luffy: Well, when you’re sick eating lots of meat always helps, right Sanji?
Sanji: Meat is protein and that does give the body energy to operate properly. I can cook some foods that’ll boost her energy, but there’s no guarantees. I’m not a doctor. Besides, if my cooking made that big a difference, she’d never get sick. I put a hundred times more care into preparing her meals than I do for you losers. I serve Nami fresh meat and vegetables to ensure a balanced diet. Anything’s that rotten or moldy goes to you.
Usopp: Jerk!
Morbius: Is that why the sandwich you made me a week ago tasted funny?!
Luffy: Oh well, still tastes good to me! Hahahaha!
Sanji: My point is that as long as I’m this ship’s cook, nobody’s gonna feed Nami better in terms of nutrition. I can do anything in the kitchen. Still, I do know there are specific foods for different kinds of illnesses, but I can’t make that call. She needs to be diagnosed by a doctor who will tell us how to help her.
Luffy: Just feed her everything that we’ve got.
Sanji: Oh, shut up. She doesn’t have the energy to eat. She’s sick!
*Vivi checks Nami’s temperature.*
Vivi: Ah! 104! No, this isn’t good!
Usopp: There’s bound to be doctors and nurses in Alabasta that can help, right? How much longer till we get there, Vivi?
Vivi: I don’t know! At least a week, and that’s too long!
Luffy: Ok, so she’s sick. Maybe we’re overreacting.
Usopp and Sanji: I don’t know. I’ve never been this sick.
Vivi: Morons! Have you all lost your minds?! This is serious! She shouldn’t have such a high fever unless her body’s fighting an infection!
Morbius: And judging by the symptoms I’m able to identify, this isn’t the flu.
Vivi: This is bad. Whatever’s wrong, it’s possibly life threatening.
Luffy, Usopp, and Sanji: Aaahh!
Luffy: You mean Nami’s gonna die?!
*They all panic.*
Vivi: Your screams aren’t helping!
Luffy: We have to find a doctor to help Nami before she dies!
Vivi: Ok! Everyone! Just calm down! You’re only going to make her feel worse!
Nami: Listen… I’m fine.
Vivi: Nami?
Morbius: You're not fine…
Nami: Yes I am…
Luffy: Yay! She’s cured!
Usopp: Shut up!
Nami: Go to my desk, open the second drawer… There’s a newspaper in the bottom.
*Outside, Zoro sits on the deck to keep the ship on course to Alabasta.*
Zoro: No change in our course.
*Vivi reads the newspaper Nami mentioned.*
Vivi: No! It’s not possible!
Luffy: Huh? What’s up? Something wrong?
Morbius: How bad is it?
Sanji: Is it about Alabasta? Tell us.
Vivi: According to this article, 300,000 royal soldiers have defected to the Resistance. Until now, we’ve been embroiled in a cold war, with 600,000 royal soldiers against 400,000 rebels. With this, the balance has shifted!
Morbius: So that means half of the soldiers of Alabasta turned against the monarch and are part of the Resistance.
Nami: The uprising in Alabasta will seriously escalate now. Things’ll get ugly. That paper you're looking at is three days old. I’m sorry I didn’t say something earlier. We can’t change our speed, so I didn’t want to worry you. There’s nothing anyone can do right now. You understand now, Luffy?
Luffy: Things are bad, and they’re beyond our control.
Morbius: That sunk in better than I’d hoped.
Usopp: Nami, look. You need to see a doctor right away.
Nami: I’m fine. That thermometer’s broken, I mean come on, nobody gets a temperature of 104. It’s probably just a mild case of sunstroke. There’s nothing a doctor can do for me that time won’t. Besides, we don't have time to hunt for one. We need to head straight for Alabasta, right? I appreciate the concern.
*She gets up and goes up to the deck.*
Luffy: Huh, she sure recovered fast.
Usopp: No, she’s faking it.
Morbius: It doesn’t matter what she says. She needs medical treatment and she needs it now. But of course…
*He looks over at Vivi.*
Morbius: That’s not the only thing to be worried about at the moment.
Vivi: Now that this conflict has escalated, more blood will be shed throughout the kingdom. We’re at war. If I don’t put a stop to this insanity, the entire kingdom of Alabasta will be doomed! Crocodile will move in and seize control! You’re trying to get me home safely, but there’s no time! I need to get home as quickly as possible! If I don’t make it back in time, a million innocent citizens will give their lives needlessly!
Luffy: There’s a million people there?! Wow!
Sanji: What a horrible burden you have to carry. I’m sorry.
*Vivi begins to break down. Morbius tries his best to calm her*
Morbius: Hey, hey… There. There.
*Nami goes outside and sees they’re no longer following the direction of the Eternal Pose.*
Nami: Zoro, what the hell have you been watching all this time?!
Zoro: What are you talking about? We’ve been going straight ahead as you ordered.
Nami: Oh yeah, straight at a right angle! Look at the Eternal Pose! It doesn’t lie!
Zoro: I don’t need to look at it. I’ve been using that big cloud over there as my guide.
Nami: You moron, clouds move and change shape constantly! Ow! Jeez, my head’s killing me.
Zoro: So leave the navigating to me and go to bed!
Nami: I wish that I could, but I’m here because I can’t trust you with this!
*Nami then notices a change in the air pressure.*
Nami: The air… It’s changed…
Zoro: What’d ya mean? The weather’s been nice like this all day.
Nami: Never mind. Just get the others.
Zoro: Hey! Get your butts out here! Right now!
*Everyone else goes outside.*
Usopp: What do ya want?
Sanji: Ya know, I find it hard to get motivated when you’re giving the orders.
Zoro: Shut up and get moving! Take the seat and catch the porridge wild!
Sanji: Nami, what’s up? It’s a perfect day. The sun is shining and the waves are quiet.
Nami: The wind…
Sanji: The wind?
Morbius: What about the wind?
Nami: There’s a powerful wind. It’s heading right this way. I think…
*Luffy puts his hand on Nami’s head to feel her temperature.*
Nami: Luffy?
Luffy: Your head’s on fire! You gotta stay in bed! And we need to get you a doctor!
Nami: Maybe you should mind your business! This is my normal temperature! Now quit being so damn stupid and pull the ropes!
Morbius: Nami, the normal temperature for the human body is 97 degrees. Even Luffy can tell you’re not well.
Nami: I said I’m fine!
Sanji: Nami, I know you’re acting brave for Vivi, but if you keep pushing your body won’t have a chance to heal.
Karoo: Quack.
Nami: I told you guys I’m fine! Let it go!
*But her breathing begins to stagger and she tries to reorient herself.*
Usopp: Whoa, hey. Take it easy.
Nami: Not another word, dammit! Hurry and move the ship!
Sanji: Right, we’re on it.
Usopp: You got it.
*Everyone moves to prepare for an incoming weather emergency.*
Nami: Sheesh… Something, I don’t know. But something’s headed this way and soon.
*Luffy sits on the figurehead of the ship as it changes direction to follow the Eternal Pose.*
*Inside the Merry*
Vivi: I need to get home before time runs out.
*Vivi goes outside.*
Vivi: I need to ask you all a favor! As a passenger on your ship, it’s not my place to ask this, but I have no choice. My homeland is in jeopardy of being destroyed. So I would really appreciate it if we could move even faster. Every minute out here puts more of my people in danger of losing their lives. We need to head for Alabasta at full speed!
Nami; Of course we will. Just like we promised.
Vivi: Then it’s settled. Let’s find an island with a doctor on it right away!
Nami: Huh?
Vivi: First thing’s first. We need to hurry and get Nami healthy again. Then we head for Alabasta. After all, we need her at the helm to move at top speed.
Luffy: Right! No one makes this ship move like Nami!
Morbius: Yeah, we can’t go anywhere without her.
Vivi; Princess, hold on. Won’t finding a doctor for Nami take time the citizens of Alabasta just don’t have?
Vivi: That’s right! So the sooner we get Nami a doctor, the sooner we can get to Alabasta!
Sanji: Those are some wise words, Vivi. You’re beautiful and brilliant!
Zoro: The girl’s got guts.
Morbius: It still won’t change the fact the longer we stay out here, the greater danger Alabasta is in.
Sanji: Yeah. But we may have more time than we think.
Vivi: What are you talking about, Sanji?
Sanji: When I was talking to Crocodile over the phone on Little Garden, thinking I was Mr. 3, he said he needed me to be in Alabasta by New Years.
Usopp: New Years?
Sanji: Yeah. I’m not sure why though. Something about a plan. Other than that, he didn’t say anything else.
Luffy: So what does that mean?
Morbius: Which means as long the conflict in Alabasta doesn’t escalate…
Vivi: It means we have till then to get to Alabasta.
Usopp: And it’s the middle of summer, so we should have plenty of time to get there.
Zoro: In other words, have time to find a doctor for Nami and get the princess back home.
Vivi: Indeed. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t waste time. The situation in Alabasta can change at any moment. So right now, let’s focus on getting help for Nami.
Morbius: I agree. Her condition could change as well, and it could become life threatening.
Nami: Thank you, Vivi.
Vivi: Don’t overexert yourself, Nami!
Nami: I’m… I’m sorry. I may need to lie down…
Vivi: Nami!
Luffy: Aaahh! What the hell is that?!
*Out of nowhere, the ship comes face to face with a massive cyclone.*
Vivi: It’s a cyclone!
Luffy: It's huge!
Vivi: Wait! That’s the same path we were headed on!
Morbius: Seriously?!
Sanji: Vivi’s right! That’s the exact same direction!
Usopp: It would’ve been a direct hit if we'd kept going straight! We’d be dead by now!
*Thunder and lightning begin to fill the sky.*
Luffy: See that?! Way too close! We barely missed it!
Vivi: Incredible! Cyclones in the ocean are said to be impossible to predict! Yet, somehow Nami did! However she does it, it’s obvious her method isn’t based on any conceptual method. It’s as if she’s detecting the weather with her body! It’s beyond reason! A miracle!
Luffy: Alright! What are we waiting here for?! Let’s find Nami a doctor!
All: Yeah!
*Much time has passed. Vivi, Sanji and Morbius look after Nami in the sick bay.*
Sanji: Ah! What’re we gonna do, Vivi?! Nami’s fever won’t go down!
Karoo: Quack!
Vivi: Hey, guys! Stop! That behavior isn’t helping.
*Vivi puts a cold washcloth on Nami’s head as she rests in bed.*
Morbius: Alright I created something that can help Nami.
*He pulls out a pill.*
Sanji: What is it? Some kind of medicine that can cure her?!
Morbius: No, it’s tylenol.
*He gets smacked.*
Morbius: Ow!
Sanji: Don't hype us up like that!
Morbius: It'll make her pain less painful…
Sanji: Well at least there's that.
*He looks at Nami’s sea chart and the Eternal Pose.*
Morbius: I’m afraid I have some bad news. I may not be a navigational expert, but it seems we’ve been thrown off course a little. We’re now heading towards North America.
Vivi: But how?
Morbius: My best possible guess is that we hit a current that drifted away from where the eternal pose was guiding us.
Sanji: Is there any way to get back to where we were?
Morbius: I’m not sure. I’m not the navigator. I pray we can find an island that has a doctor soon. Maybe Nami we'll be able to get us back on course once she's cured.
*Out on the deck, Luffy and Usopp sit outside while Zoro is atop the crow’s nest on lookout duty. It has begun to snow as they are now in a colder climate.*
Luffy: See any doctors yet?!
Usopp: Luffy, you can’t be serious.
*Zoro sees something out on the water through some binoculars.*
Zoro; Uh, hey, guys… What do you think about people standing in water?
Luffy: What, do I think it’s possible?
Usopp: What kind of question is that? It’s impossible, of course!
Zoro: Yeah? Then what’s that?
Luffy: What’s what?
Usopp: Say what?
*They look straight at the water and do indeed see a guy standing on it.*
Luffy: You think he’s a doctor?
