"Miles! Finally got through..."
Miles felt his heart drop. Peter knew about the bridge...
"Uh... Hey Pete- what's goin' on?"
Oh yeah Miles, just act casual. It's not like Peter has a sixth sense or anything
"I saw the news, it was in Symkarian so either "A bridge exploded" or "A bagel was fumigated", which doesn't make sense in context." At least Peter was joking around, but Miles wasn't sure if it was a good thing. He tended to make jokes when he was relaxed and messing around or if he was worried or anxious "Either way, I'm looking at flights, I can be back tomorrow night."
"No! Don't do that" Miles said a little too quickly "It's okay, I've figured out whose responsible and I'm going to stop them. I promise"
Miles wanted to prove himself. He started this mess and was even friends with the Tinkerer he needed to take care of it. The bridge collapse was his fault. Peter had entrusted the city to him after not leaving for almost 10 years. What kind of hero would he be if he called him back the second he left?
"Okay I trust you" Peter sounded more relaxed- had he been worried? "But if you need help, I'll be on the first flight home. Otherwise, I'll see you when I get back in a few weeks okay?"
"Yeah okay. Thanks- and good luck learning Symkarian!"
"Ugh, why are there seven different words for 'bathroom'-" It sounded like the call cut off. Peter 100% had more to say about that.
'I trust you' Miles couldn't help but smile. At the same time, he had to breathe through the anxiety in his chest. Taking responsibility for the situation meant that it was up to him to stop Phin... would he have to fight her? No way it would be as bad as when Peter had to fight Octavious right?
Miles sighed, Peter was in the middle of a warzone but was willing to drop everything to come help if Miles needed it. He needed to be honest with him. Miles had caused the explosion on the bridge with his electricity- accidentally but still. He destabilize the Nuform and people almost got hurt. Would he be mad? The last thing he wanted was to disappoint Peter, but he had to brave it. Being a hero was all about doing scary things because it was right.
Miles tried calling Peter back but got nothing. Not even voicemail.
Warzone, right
Warzones were scary. There were several videos online from Symkaria about how bad things were over there. Miles hadn't watched many, it reminded him too much of City Hall. Peter had been at City Hall too, and MJ had dragged him away after he'd been hurt- and Dad... never even made it off that stage. Peter would be fine though, Miles knew firsthand how fast Peter reacted to things when the spider-sense warned him of something. The guys reflexes were insane. He was probably guiding the soilders around without them even noticing. Miles wasn't worried, not at all.
Miles tried texting Peter instead
Miles: Pete you should know, I caused the explosion. My electricity destabilized the nuform. I'm really sorry
Peter: The whole thing fell!
Peter: Ha! Like a true Spider-Man
Peter: You saw the Brooklyn Bridge fight right?
Miles was so relieved, Peter was already joking around about it- definitely wasn't mad. The messages seemed a little out of order but it wasn't hard to piece together what order they'd been sent in.
Peter sent a link and Miles found himself looking at a report of the damage the Brooklyn Bridge took when it collapsed. The estimated cost was around $3 million. Miles wondered if it would cost that much to fix the Braithwade Bridge.
It's not a major landmark so hopefully, it'll be cheaper... still can't hope for less than a million
But... Rhino had destroyed the bridge. The Braithwaite Bridge was more directly caused by Miles
Miles: Pretty sure Rhino did most of the damage. You just jumped out of the way
Peter: Nah that's just what people assume
Peter: I pulled the cables down trying to cut off his path. I didn't even think about how they were support cables. The whole thing came down after that
"You pulled down the support cables with your bare hands?" Miles said aloud. He swore Peter was at least a little stronger than he was. Which Miles now made up for with electricity- and invisibility apparently.
Peter: It's going to take you 10 years to match the property damage I've caused and that's if I retire now
Miles rolled his eyes
Miles: You never had anyone teach you how to avoid damage
There were a lot of close calls Peter hadn't seen
Peter: I couldn't teach you about your electricity. It's how you deal with the situation once it happens
Peter: No casualties, Miles, you did GREAT
Miles thought back to the other thing that had bothered him. Roxxcon had been so fast to point guns at him. They didn't care he'd helped save people, they didn't even listen... Is that how Peter felt when Osborne declared Spider-Man as SABLE's #1 target?
Miles: Roxxcon turned on me so fast man. It was nuts
Peter: Yeah I think I fought SABLE more than I fought Demons
Peter: Be very very careful Miles. SABLE was on orders to bring me in to study. Still don't know what that means, but I can't imagine it's anything I'd want. Whatever you do, don't let them catch you
Osborne wanted to study Peter? Miles couldn't say he was surprised. The dude was obsessed with him- both as Peter Parker and as Spider-Man though he didn't realize he was chasing the same person on both fronts. Norman was even trying to recreate Peter's powers. Got it pretty close too, Miles had the same powers plus a few bonuses.
I wonder if he knows the spider is missing
Miles: btw did you see the invisibility??
Peter: No I didn't see anything! It's amazing!
Peter: Eh meaning I saw you disappear. We rewatched that like 100 times!!
Peter: That's going to be so useful!
Miles chuckled a bit. He had to admit he felt way better. Peter was literally the only other person who knew what he was going through, and he knew exactly what to say.
Peter: Hey, they're moving us. I won't have much signal for awhile. Call if you need me, I can see missed calls
Miles: Ok stay safe
Peter never responded and Miles swung away from the building. He had some time to patrol before heading home. He was starting to see why Peter swung around to clear his head
