Scene 2: May 22nd, 1986, The Kitchen 6:50am

Hailey is sitting down at a chair, barely eating her food, mood is dejected. 

Her aunt slowly glances up at her, obvious concern in her eyes, however, Hailey catches her gaze and looks up. 

Hailey: (tone is sharp, almost harsh) What? 

Aunt hesitates, opening her mouth to talk, takes a deep breath, looks down, closes her mouth. 

Aunt: Nothing.

Hailey softly scoffs and goes back to eating her food - or more so just looking at it.

Hailey: Whatever.

Aunt looks back up at Hailey, her expression solemn. 

Aunt: Look, I know that you’re not taking your father's death well. But I need you to understand that it’s- 

Aunt takes a deep breath,

Aunt: It’s better this way. Now, I don’t like to speak ill of the dead but- you know how he treated you. 

Hailey is looking blankly at the kitchen counter.

Hailey: Just bring me to school. I don’t want to talk about it.

Aunt opens her mouth, looking like she’s going to say something but instead she nods. 

Aunt: Okay. Come on, then. (she briefly looks at her watch) We’ll be late if we don’t get going soon anyways. 

Hailey gets up, putting her backpack over her shoulder as her aunt walks to the front door.
