Lexi felt her heart seize and breath get punched out of her at the sight of him.
Thor Odinson, once he was the love of her life, everything she wanted in a partner. He was thoughtful of everything when it came to her. Anything she wanted she was gifted for no other reason than she made a small, “I like that,” as she passed by something. If she even spoke of wanting to try something, she found herself hours later experiencing the one thing, big or small, she mentioned she wanted to do. He spoiled her, loved her so much he put her first for everything.
She knew Thor was the heir to a family business. It is how he was able to afford every extravagant thing he did for her. She didn’t ask questions, she knew it had something to do with shipments and property. It didn’t bother her when he needed to take a call in another room and that he didn’t tell her much about his work… Maybe if she asked more questions she would have known about what he was actually doing before stumbling into a call of him ordering a death before Lexi got off of work because he did not want to deal with the situation anymore.
Thor noticed her immediately, as if he was there for her. “Lexi.”
She turned and walked the other way. She broke up with him a few days later, trying not to be suspicious and criminalize herself. What would happen to her if he knew?
He gently grabbed her, “Lexi, I need to talk to you…”
Lexi held her breath as she looked at him. “I don’t want to talk.”
“Why did you actually end things with me?”
She swallowed as she looked at him. His eyes were sharp with worry and knowing. He couldn’t know, right? Fear must have been evident on her face… She was never good at hiding strong emotions.
Thor sighed, gently holding both of her arms. “What do you know?”
“N-nothing.”
“My father’s security informed me that you were outside of my office a few days ago. When I was on a call and after that day you were acting strange.”
Lexi got out of his hold. “I won’t tell anyone. I haven’t.”
Thor let her go, “I believe you. I promise you, that was for your protection.”
Lexi gasped sickness rolling in her stomach and anger warming her, “what?-you -you ordered that, for me? I didn’t ask.”
“They were going to kidnap you for ransom. They were planning it for a few days, they were watching you.”
Nausea was swirling in her stomach as her mind raced, terrified of what might have been true. “I never noticed anyone.”
“They were good at what they were doing. I knew being open about a relationship with you would be a bad idea. I love you so much. The joy and innocence that I needed in my life. I see now that we can not be together no matter how much I want that.”
Lexi felt the tears welling in her eyes. Her heart cracking from the loss of love, finally breaking through the fear. “Is this goodbye?”
“It has to be. I can not put you in danger any longer.”
