"It's not the TVA."
"I beg your pardon?"
Loki had been eating lunch in the cafeteria, grumbling about how he could do his job better if he had access to his magic, when Ravonna sat down in front of him.
"I said, it's not the TVA itself. Magic works just fine here."
"Then what in the norns is preventing mine?!"
"Mobius."
The God was left flabbergasted for the second time in one conversation.
"How can you say that? Mobius happens to be my dearest Lo....er friend, my dearest friend. He would never betray me in that manner."
"He doesn't do it on purpose, Loki. Magical things just seem to fizzle out when he's around. I don't think he's even aware that it's happening."
Loki had to admit it made some degree of sense. After all, both times he'd tried using his powers were when Mobius was nearby. Still....
"Are you absolutely sure it's just Mobius that affects it?"
"See for yourself, he's currently out on a mission on the timeline, so you should be able to work your wonders."
He looked from side to side and held out his palm, willing his seiðr to come forth. Sure enough, the simple fireworks spell his mother had taught him came shooting forth.
"I...I can't believe it.....so he's immune to all magic?"
"All the types we've encountered so far at least."
"Facinating," he whispered before snapping the lights back out of existence," so why tell me any of this? You've made it quite clear from the beginning that you don't like me."
Ravonna sighed and looked looked down at the table.
"It doesn't matter how I feel, the fact is Mobius likes you, and if this 'thing' going on between you two is going to continue, then you'll need to prepare to deal with a life without magic. Otherwise, someone's going to wind up getting hurt, and I'll be damned if I let it be him."
With that she stood up, and walked away, leaving Loki with quite a few things to think about.
*********
"Tell me Mobius, what do you think about magic?"
Mobius looked up from the file he was reading to stare at Loki with a puzzled expression.
"What does that have to do with the case?"
"Nothing, just answer the question."
"Well, not much to be honest," he said while flipping through another file," It has always seemed kind of stupid to me, the concept of spells and illusions and making things happen just by wishing for it. It's just not something I could ever get myself to believe in."
"Interesting," the God murmured as he tried to use his powers to will his way into the other man's mind," So what do you make of my powers, when they aren't blocked that is..."
"I'm fairly certain those are more to do with your alien biology than anything mysti-Loki are you okay?"
"Perfectly fine."
"You sure? Cause your face makes it seem like you're constipated or something."
Loki let out a whoosh of air and gave up. Clearly mind magic was on the list of things Mobius was immune to.
"I'm fine, Moby, just a bit of a headache."
"We can't have that," Mobius said as he closed the folder before standing up and grabbing the mage by the hand," come with me and I'll whip up some of that special pasta you like."
"Can't refuse an offer like that."
As they headed towards the agent's living quarters, Loki vowed to keep going until he found one type of magic that the man could not neutralize.
*********
"I just don't understand it....there has got to be something!"
Loki was pacing around his room in a huff. He'd tried every form of sorcery he knew (and a few that he didn't) against Mobius and nothing worked.
At this point Loki was clueless. He loved the man with everything in him, but magic was woven into the very fibers of his being. If he had to choose which one to live without......
That's not a choice he was willing to make.
Frustrated, he threw one of his daggers at the bookshelf across from him. The tome it hit was one he didn't recall seeing before, and when he opened it, he was shocked to see that it was a volume written on Jötunheim mystics.
One page in particular was very enlightening.
"Sálmagnarar are among the most powerful of Jötnar mages. Their powers make them immune to nearly every form of magic, except for the ice weaving abilities of their soulmate."
Loki's hands started shaking violently. Could the answer really lie in his long-dreaded heritage? But Mobius couldn't possibly be like him.....
Could he?
"Guess there's only one way to find out."
***********
Mobius returned home later that evening to find Loki wearing a hole in his living room floor. When the Göð finally noticed him, his face was equal parts excited and nauseated.
"Everything okay, Lo?"
"Yes...no...maybe...Look, Mobius, do you trust me?"
"You know I do."
"Good," Loki said as he took a deep breath and let it out," because I need to show you something."
He closed his eyes, and felt the temperature drop several degrees as his glamour faded away. He held his hand up and concentrated on the unfamiliar strands of seiðr flowing through him.
A swirl of ice appeared in his palm, and kept spinning until it had formed a single icy rose.
He opened his eyes to see the other man staring at him in shock.
"Loki....you....how did you..."
"It's a special type of magic that can only be done by two beings at the TVA...myself....."
He grabbed Mobius's hand in his, watching with morbid fascination as the blue spread upwards.
"And you."
In moments the agent's skin was just as blue as his lover's. There were swirls and designs similar to Loki's dancing across it, and his mustache had taken on a more jagged, ice-like design. Instead of red, however, his eyes were the color of seaglass.
He was the most beautiful creature that the Göð had ever seen.
"Loki, I don't understand," Mobius said as he stared at the azure coloring on his arm," what is this?"
"This is your true form, my love. Ravonna thought you were simply immune to all things magical, not realizing that you were a being of magic yourself."
"So, am I a...Jötunn, like you?"
"I'm afraid so."
Mobius went silent for a moment, and Loki worried that he was about to get upset. But then he felt himself get tugged forward into a kiss that was like ice and fire combined. When they finally pulled apart, the other man was grinning like crazy.
"This is amazing!"
"It is?"
"Of course it is! I was afraid that if you ever decided to settle on a timeline, that I wouldn't be able to follow due to aging, but now I know I don't have to worry about that!"
"And you're really okay being a Jötnar?" Loki asked with a hint of hesitation," you don't find us to be....monstrous?"
"I've seen plenty of monsters before, Lo, and you and I aren't one of them. Besides, anything that let's me follow you anywhere is okay in my book."
"In that case, how about you follow me to the bedroom, and we see what magic we can create between us."
"Lead the way, my Prince."
Loki left the rose on a nearby table and took his soulmate to bed, where they created their own sparks for the rest of the evening.
