Chapter 1
“No!” Jade yelled. “Have you completely gone insane? If you go out there and fight for me, you’re sure to die!”
“Well, it’s not like you gave us much choice, Miss Double Agent,” Tony yelled back. “This is all your fault! We wouldn’t be in this mess if you didn’t infiltrate us and make us feel feelings.”
Jade stood with herself braced against a glass table. Her fingers were tensing and untensing as she looked between members of the X-Men and members of the Avengers. All looked solemn and contemplative, some even sorrowful. They all came to the conclusion that they must protect Jade at all costs from being captured from the enemies that pursued her. It wasn’t an easy decision, but one that would benefit all involved. It would stop Jade from becoming too destructive and save the earth from its untimely demise.
Of course, it wasn’t the best decision. In this universe, Jade was a deadly bomb possessing both the X gene and super soldier enhancements due to Hydra. She was stronger than most of the mutants in the room. Not only that, but they found out she was a double agent secretly sending sensitive information about both teams to the enemies. She’s been living with them for over a year. Only as recently as four months ago did she stop sending information to her leaders, having a change of heart after seeing how kind and welcoming the heroes of earth were. When her leaders found out, they gave her multiple warnings, telling her that they’d come to destroy every friend she’s made and the rest of earth with it. Their plan for world domination be damned.
It all came to a head when Jade once again ignored the warning thinking that it was all a bluff and they were on their doorstep. That’s when it all came out. The secret agent thing, the information she’d given them, everything. Everyone in that room was still processing the emotions from the betrayal, but they didn’t have enough time to process it when Doctor Strange looked into the future. A future where Jade was handed over and the world was doomed because of it. Her leaders would push her to her limits until she eventually lost her mind and destroyed everything in a psychotic rage. Including the people who did that to her.
So that brings them to now. Their decision was final. Jade could do nothing about it.
“I know I did this, I know I betrayed you, and I know it’s all my fault, but you can’t die for me,” Jade said. “You have to give me up! It’s the only right thing to do! You’d never have to see me again, ever!”
Cyclops let out a huge frustrated grunt. “Were you not listening?” he asked her. “Strange said if we let you go, they will make you into a monster that destroys earth! Our best shot is to keep you here while we do the fighting!”
“You have too much information as well,” Professor Xavier said. “If we let you go now, not only will they destroy us, they will destroy us with our own knowledge. Like Scott said, our best shot is to keep you here.”
Jade stood to full height and crossed her arms across her chest, squeezing tightly. She wanted to be angry with them and their decision, but she knew it was the only way. If what Strange said was true, they had to keep her here. Not because they cared about her, but because they cared about their planet and what happened to it in the future. Of course, the saving the planet part made sense, but the keeping her safe part didn’t. Why wasn’t she back with other Hydra organizations if they had little care about her? Why wasn’t she in a high security prison somewhere? They could leave her by the side of the road, forever on the run from the people who sought to exploit her. So why were they keeping her here at the Avengers base no less?
Though they didn’t care for her, she cared for each of them deeply. It’s why she stopped sending information. It’s why she kept ignoring the calls of her superiors. It’s why they were all in this mess. She didn’t want them to die fiery deaths or end up in a pit somewhere where no one will ever find them again. She wanted to see them thrive and live long lives. Not die for her. Not try fighting a fight that would end in tragedy.
“Fine,” Jade said, her voice low and growly. “Do as you please. I will not be blamed for any deaths if you fail.”
Jade turned around, her white hair whipping with her. “Jade,” Kurt said, almost sounding sad as he said it.
Before he could say anything else to persuade her to do something or to convince her one more time that she should stay, people started to fly out of the base one by one. She heard as Iron Man took off, as Doctor Strange took to the air, and as Jean and the others used vehicles to get around. The last one she heard was Kurt and his distinct popping sounds as he teleported somewhere else.
When Jade finally turned around to see the base empty, she was once again alone. Alone to her thoughts. Alone to her devices. Alone to her fears. The one thought that kept racing through her head was that there was no way she was going to let the people she cared for die even if they didn’t care for her. She was going to confront her leaders whether they liked it or not. She looked around for some sort of metal object to float around on. When she saw a disc-like thing not too far from her, she got on it and floated away.
