"Hey Stevie!" you call down the hall of the compound. The blond turns around to face you, raising his eyebrows in response. "Could I call in one of those favours you own me from all of those times I've saved your ass?" you ask, crossing your fingers and giving him your best smile.
"Sure doll, what do you want from me? A ride somewhere?"
"Actually no, I was wondering if I could borrow the shield..." you trail off, nibbling on your bottom lip.
"Yes, you can. But only as long as what you're going to be doing doesn't break any laws this time. Does it?"
"No! I promise it doesn't! I want to test something. I've done the calculations as to how it should fly and I want to check if I am right about my assumptions. You can help if you want and aren't busy." You smile innocently up at the super soldier.
"Then of course you can borrow the shield, especially if it means I don't have to bail you out of jail today. C'mon, it's in my room." You follow him down the many corridors of the compound. When you reach his door, you politely wait outside the room as he retrieves the shield from where it hangs on the wall. "Here you go. Have fun and don't hurt yourself." he says, placing the weapon in your hands.
"Thanks Stevie!" you yell, jogging back down the hall, towards the stairwell and throwing the door open and sprinting down them. You arrive on the laboratory level and return to your jog down the hall and use your key card hung around your neck to open the lab room you were working in before.
After hours of tossing the shield around the large room, you are becoming increasingly more frustrated with the weapon. When it lands again you check your note book and let out an ear-piercing scream, making the scientists in the labs surrounding you jerk their heads up. "Damn it, why aren't you obeying the laws of physics?" you yell at the shield laying on the floor. You pick it up and wildly toss it at the wall in dissatisfaction, without thinking of the consequences. The vibranium weapon flies back at you at full speed and hits you directly in the head.
"Y/n? Y/n? Y/n, can you hear me?" asks Bruce Banner's voice from above your head.
"Go away," you whine, trying to roll away from him. "My head hurts,"
"That's because you got hit in the head with my shield, doll." says Steve's voice, joining Bruce.
"Huh?" you ask, super confused, prying your eyes open to look at your surroundings. "Oh, god. It's fucking bright. Why is it so bright in here?" you groan, rubbing your eyes.
"I'll get the lights," says Steve, moving away from your sight and flicking the lights off.
"Thanks Stevie," you mutter, smiling hazily.
"No problem doll. Now, I'm going to help you stand up, alright?" Steve says, leaning down and taking your hands in his.
"Why?" you squawk, as he slowly pulls you up.
"So we can take you to the med-bay. You have a nasty cut on your forehead. Who thought it was a good idea for you to be left alone with the shield?" asks Bruce, walking beside you, ensuring you don't fall as you look extremely unstable on your feet.
"I did, Banner. I thought she was going to be safe and not injure herself. Clearly I was wrong, huh doll?"
"Sorry, Stevie. I was frustrated and not thinking right. I just threw it and the next thing that I know is that I'm waking up on my lab floor with you pair hovering over me. Just take me to the med-bay, stitch me up and let me get on with my day. I still have to recalculate the physics and test the shield again." you wave your hand dismissively at the men flanking you.
"Actually, while we were waiting for you to come to, I looked over your mathematics. All the equations are right. Your math was all right. You didn't make a single mistake." assures Bruce.
"But, I was wrong? None of my test throws worked. There had to have been some sort of mistake!" you begin to fret, your breathing becoming heavier.
"Y/n, the shield doesn't follow the laws that other metals do. Vibranium has its own set of laws. If you want to understand them, we can set up time that you can video chat with Shuri. She will explain all of them to you. Just like she did with Tony and I." reassures Bruce, as you enter the med-bay. Your fellow scientist leads you to a empty gurney and pushes you to sit on its edge. He waves over a free nurse who grabs the nearest medical kit and walks over.
"Has she been checked for a concussion?" asks the young man.
"No, but shes coherent and has been talking and walking fine."
"Alright, just make sure to keep an eye on her for the next forty-eight hours and to keep this wound clean." says the nurse cleaning the skin around your wound with an alcohol swab before drying it with a piece of gauze. He dresses the cut with a clean strip of gauze and tapes it down gently. "There you go, just take it easy for the next two days and you should be alright." The nurse pats your shoulder, packs up the medical kit and walks away without another word.
"Alright, I'll be off now. Thanks for the help guys." you say, pushing off of the gurney and beginning to walk away.
"No! Get your ass back here! You're not going any where without me beside you! You heard what the nurse said, you need to take it easy." Steve says, placing a hand on your back.
"I don't need to be supervised constantly, Steven. You don't need to follow me around. I do know how to take it easy, you know." You brush him off and turn the corner, stepping into an empty elevator. You close the door before Steve can step in with you and ride it up to the floor where the common room is. Heading down the hall, you wander into the kitchen and make yourself a snack before returning to your quarters.
~Two Hours Later~
A knock on your door sounds. "Hey, its Natasha. Can I come in?"
"Yeah, sure come in!" you call, putting your book down and roll over to face the door.
"Hey! Heard you had a bit of a scientific accident. Hit yourself in the head with Rogers' shield. How'd that feel?" she asks, perching on the edge of your bed.
"Oh god, it hurt like hell Nat. Then Steve decides that he has to be responsible for me because I was told to take it easy. As if I haven't followed those orders all my life." The pair of you chuckle. "But I fell fine overall. Just a little bit of throbbing pain in my forehead, but that's to be expected. I mean, I did get hit in the head with a vibranium shield three hours ago. Is there anything you needed in particular Nat?"
"Yeah, actually I do. It's Tony's turn to cook dinner and he really doesn't want to cook and wants to know what your order for pizza is."
"Just cheese for me, if you don't mind." you smile at her.
"Alright, that's easy! See you later Y/n!" she leaves your room.
"See you, Nat!" you call back to her.
