Calm Down...
***A MONTH AFTER SOKOVIA***
It’s been 3 weeks since Veronika left the hospital.
Week one they set her up in her new room, making her continue resting from sparring for a week, obviously letting her work out to keep her routine. But not doing the fore set her on edge, of course but Steve was looking out for her. She accepted that. She felt loved by that.
On week two Nat and Steve told her she could start powerless sparring. They didn’t want her wasting her energy on sparring.
Now week three they let her back to power use, minimal, but getting there. Steve and Natasha were majorly parenting her. She couldn’t help but hate and love the attention. Showing their care was just their way.
So here she was standing with Wanda, and Pietro. She had officially joined the team along with Rhodey called the War Machine, Sam who’s called the Falcon and of course the Vision. Though Clint had left the team, and Hulk is MIA currently, oh and Thor was looking for the rest of the stones…Veronika would say that her new colleagues, even speedy, were great to work with so far.
Today she was paired with the twins to test her abilities and theirs.
First, she planned on sparring with Wanda. Then she was going to spar with Pietro.
Her and Wanda stood in ready positions.
“Ready?” Veronika asked, her voice and accent crisp with the wonderful June morning.
“If you are.” Wanda smirked and suddenly Veronika threw a ball of stars at her. She ducked and when she recovered threw her own energy ball. Veronika ducked and rolled, throwing another ball at her feet making the other girl fall.
“Hey!” Wanda yelped. Veronika smirked.
Veronika jumped floating in the air doing a flip over Wanda moving shadows to hold down her opponent.
“Done.” Veronika said with a proud smirk.
“Damnit. She’s quick!” Wanda said aggravatedly. Veronika flicked her wrist letting the girl go.
“Trained to be, I’m sure you’ll get there soon Wanda.” She smiled, holding out her hand. “Especially with Steve and Nat as your teachers, they do quite a good job.” Veronika assured and helped the girl up.
“Not as good as that, but thanks.” She sighed as they both looked at Steve.
“At least it’s a start. Great job girls.” Steve said with a smile.
“Pietro you’re next.” Nat ushered him towards Ver and Wanda to sit.
“In all honesty from where I sat, prințesă, you weren't being very fair,” he said as Steve retold the rules to him, and she glared at the boy.
They got in position, still she had a glare.
“What? How was I not being fair?” She quirked a brow.
“You didn’t give her time to respond!” He protested in a whisper.
“She needs to be quicker on her feet, sure you won't have a problem there?” she threw a ball of stars at him, and he ran behind her kicking her forward she stumbled into a roll again but threw another power ball at him. He went back slightly but getting his wits quickly dodged her next attempt. He ran behind her and kicked her again. She fell with a grunt, and she jumped up and faced him glaring.
“What? Get quicker on your feet!” He smirked.
She threw another ball at him, throwing him against a wall this time. He slid down the wall and groaned. He rolled to his stomach and got up. She was moving towards him, and he noticed her eyes aglow. She felt bad at how hard he hit the wall, but he started it.
“Ah shit, sensitive?”
That’s it. She, at that comment, threw another ball at him, shadows captured his feet, and he was fully against the wall. She kept coming, fist raised until she heard Steve.
“HEY! Woah, woah, woah. Calm down kid you got him, he’s pinned.” He got closer and saw her eyes, she was angry. “Veronika stand down, okay? He was messing around, just like you were.”
She looked at Steve and realized she was a little too angry, pent-up nerves. She just didn’t like the way he was taunting her. Taking a few breaths she unclenched her fists, “I’m sorry, Silver. I got too carried away…” She looked at the boy, letting him down, “are you okay?”
“Yeah…” He looked at her and tilted his head. Her eyes no longer aglow, he knew he shouldn’t have pushed but he did. He just walked to Wanda and Veronika huffed at him. Looking at her hands, seeing purple, black, and blue spark through them she rushed out of the training room running her hands over her face and into her hair. She felt bad for going off on Pietro but then again, he pushed her. But he was just stirring the pot, not in a bad way either, she wasn’t really used to that still.
“Hey kid you, okay?” Nat said as she heard her footsteps coming near her.
“I’m fine. Is silver- I mean Pietro, okay?”
“Yeah, he was fine, he doesn’t blame you.”
“He shouldn’t, he was the one teasing me.” She sighed. “We both did it. But he was lecturing me about a FAIR fight between Wanda and I!” she huffed and shook her head. “He’s a speedy, no-good jerk.”
You don’t believe that.
SHUT UP. She yelled at herself.
Nat gave her a look. Nat knew the look in the young girl’s eyes and that look was not anger. She knew Veronika liked the silver haired speedster. She just won’t admit that, and Nat knew that feeling as well. Specifically with one Captain America.
“He’s still new, but so are you for now just calm down. You both still need to adjust to this life.” Nat smiled, putting a hand on the girl’s head, stroking her hair, sweetly, kind of like a mother after her daughter just skidded her knee.
“You’re right, I guess. I’m sorry.” she looked at Nat, “Is-” she hesitated. “Is Steve mad at me?”
Nat shook her head. “No, he’s not. He just needed to dismiss the others.” She affirmed.
Veronika nodded, moving away from Nat towards the stairs that lead to the Kitchen. “Okay, well uhm, I think I might go grab something to eat.” Nat stopped her though.
“Wait, can you wait just a little longer? Steve and I do want to tell you something.”
The girl raised her brow at the redhead in front of her. “What is it-” she was cut off by Steve’s voice.
“Nat! Ver!” Steve came up to them, holding some papers. Everyone was walking in the opposite direction out of sight. “You didn’t tell her without me-”
“No Steve, she doesn’t know yet.” Natasha said like it was obvious.
Veronika looked between the two curiously.
“ ‘She doesn’t know’ what?” Ver asked well knowing they’re referring to her. “What’s going on?”
Steve smiled at her and at Nat, who was also smiling brightly. She tilted her head and looked at the papers wondering what was going on.
“We have something to tell you.” Nat started.
“Yes, now know, you don’t have to accept what we have to say. But you know-” Steve continued till Natasha cut him off. She was getting uncharacteristically excited, Veronika has never seen her like this, not even Steve has seen her like this.
“We just want you to know you have it.” she smiled while taking the papers too.
“Okay?” Veronika laughed a little. And looked at the two.
“Yes, so we’re going to give you these and ask.” Steve lifted his hand with Nat, handing her the papers.
Veronika took them, noticing they were government forms.
“We would like to know if we could adopt you.” Natasha said with a huge smile, again uncharacteristically of her, on her face as she looked at Veronika. Who was in complete awe.
“You- Wait, you want to adopt me? You can do that?” She was shocked because she didn’t know how this was possible, but it works for her, she asked looking over the papers and up at them. “Why?”
“Well since I saved you, and well, since we’ve gotten to know you. You meant so much to us even if only a few months, soon a year. You became-”
“A daughter to us Ver. You became what I thought I could never have, and well I love you kid.” Nat said cupping the young girl’s cheeks. “And if it is okay with you, I would like, even if it’s not entirely, to be considered your mom?”
“And I your dad, ‘cause I love you too, kid.” Steve said, putting a hand on her shoulder.
“You- you’re serious?” She tilted her head, eyes met with tears. She held them back, but this was too amazing to her.
“We are, you don’t have to run anymore. You can be safe here with us-” Nat started but now Ver cut them off and jumped her in a hug. She sobbed into Nat’s suit a little bit, but she was too excited to contain it.
“Please, I would love to accept the offer. You two have taken care of me, and…you know,” She pulled away and wiped her tears she smiled. “I would be happy to be considered your daughter…” She looked at Steve who looked expectant. She laughed and gave him a hug too. “Thinking it’s alright with you two.” She chuckled and Steve and Nat both hugged her.
“Absolutely.” They both said.
“You can call us, mom and dad, too…if you want? You don’t have to I know you’re 16 and probably don’t-”
“Yes, I do, I want to. You’ve been the only parents I’ve had and I just want to.” She looked at them. Her eyes looked more bright than they’d ever seen them. They nodded.
“Then it’s official, we just have to sign these last papers to get it finalized.” Steve smiled and Nat nodded.
“Absolutely. Piece of cake right,” she laughed and kept her hug on the girl.
“Piece of cake,” Veronika laughed and looked at her…parents. Her family. “Let’s do it then.” she announced.
Steve smiled and he and Natasha signed the papers, her signing them with the name she registered from the red room, which she will be changing it because of this. She thanked the God that Steve talked to her about, because her wish was happening. They were taking her in.
They took care of all that was needed and soon enough she was free, she is free with the care these people have given her.
This is her, Veronika Romanoff-Rogers’ home.
