Chapter 11
Buck and Abuela enter the house and they both hear Chris laughing and Buck is glad that Chris never saw his biological sister as he doesn't want to ever let Chris see how nasty she is.
Abuela gives Buck a reassuring squeeze on the hand and a warm smile.
Buck smiles back and he appreciates the support.
“Hey guys I'm back” Buck says.
“Papa” Chris says.
Buck goes over to the sofa and he hugs his son and he gives Eddie a kiss on the lips.
“Hello my sweetheart Christopher” Abuela says.
“Bisabuela” Chris says and he is surprised to see her.
“Abuela this is a nice surprise” Eddie says and he gets up and hugs his grandmother.
“I thought I would join you guys for lunch,” Abuela says.
“Well I'm sure mum and dad are going to love that” Eddie says.
“I'm going to get a drink. I'll be back in a few minutes” Buck says and he walks to the kitchen.
Eddie knows there's something wrong with his husband and he can see that he is hiding something.
The front door opens and it's Helena and Ramon who walk through the door.
“Mamma what are you doing here?” Ramon asks.
“I'm joining you guys for lunch,” Abuela says.
“Well that's a great surprise. Eddie, are you okay?” Helena asks.
Abuela looks at Eddie and she knows that he is worried about Evan.
Buck comes back out of the kitchen and Eddie can tell he has been crying and now he is scared.
“Christopher I'm going to need you to go to your room please as I need to talk to papa for a few minutes” Eddie says.
“Why?” Chris asks.
Buck knows Eddie can tell he has been crying and he hates that his husband knows him too well sometimes but he won't hide things from his husband.
“Chris, please do as your dad's asked” Buck says.
Chris looks like he wants to argue but he doesn't and he goes to his room.
“OK babe why have you been crying and don't tell me you haven't I can see how red your eyes are” Eddie says.
Buck goes back to the couch and sits down and Eddie sits next to his husband and takes the man's hand.
“So when I went and spoke to mum about what she wanted to tell me I found out that she lied to me and that person who broke into our house told her what her name was and my mother chose to still lie to me” Buck says.
“OK. Why would your mum lie to you?” Eddie asks.
Abuela goes over to her grandson and she looks at him and she sees the confusion on his face and the worry in his eyes.
“Eddie, the reason Evans's mother lied is because that person has something to do with his past” Abuela says.
Eddie looks at his Abuela and then to his husband and he makes the connection and he feels like he is about to throw up.
“You mean the woman is your biological sister,” Eddie says.
Helena and Ramon let out a gasp and they both quickly got over to their son in law and hugged him immediately.
“My mum said that she didn't mean to lie to me and she was going to tell me but she saw me and Chris laughing and she didn't want to hurt us” Buck says.
“But you had the right to know who broke into your house,” Helena says.
“She said that she saw in that moment that I was the little boy who needed saving and I told her I'm not him anymore and she needed to stop seeing me like that” Buck says.
“Evan you are stronger than you know and I thank my stars that I met you and I would be lost without you and I know our son worships the ground you walk on as if you are his superhero” Eddie says.
“You're just saying that,” Buck says.
“Babe I mean every word so don't you ever think that we see you any different” Eddie says and he kisses his husband.
“What are you going to do about your mother?” Ramon asks.
“I've decided to cut her out of my life for the time being as I don't know if I can forgive her so at the moment I'm not going to see her” Buck says.
“OK then that's what we do” Eddie says.
“Eddie, you don't need to do that,” Buck says.
“Evan you are my husband and I will stand by you and support you no questions asked” Eddie says.
“That goes for all of us,” Helena says.
“Thanks guys,” Buck says.
“I'm I allowed in the living room now?” Chris asks and his voice shows that he is annoyed.
“I'm sorry buddy I know you hate it when we tell you to go to your room but this was an important conversation we needed to have” Buck says.
“What was it about?” Chris asks.
“Me and Granny Athena have had a falling out as she lied to me about something so I needed to tell your dad what was happening” Buck says.
“Chris you don't need to know what it was about as you don't need to worry about it and when you spend time at granny Athena's and grandpa Bobby's it's going to be Carla who will take you for now and bring you back” Eddie says.
Chris can tell whatever has happened between his papa and his granny Athena that it's hurt his papa and he doesn't like that but he won't demand information and at least he still gets to hang out with his uncle Harry.
Chris goes over and hugs his papa and Buck pulls him closer and he loves that he has his two Diaz boys as they are his lighthouse when he gets lost.
A few minutes later everyone is sitting around the kitchen table as they all decided to stay in for lunch but they did order a lot of food and they are all laughing.
While Buck is telling a story about one of his old navy days and Chris is laughing, Helena's phone goes off and she goes to the counter and sees who's calling and she sees it's Athena.
“Ramon, can you come outside with me for a moment?” Helena asks.
Ramon looks at his wife and he is confused as to why his wife wants to speak to him outside.
Ramon gets up and he joins his wife outside and he sees who's calling and now he understands.
Helena answers the phone and she puts it on loudspeaker.
“Hello Athena just to let you know that you are on loudspeaker and we know what you did” Helena says.
“I knew Evan would tell you” Athena says.
“Yes he did and we are angry that you did that to him after you told us what he went through and how you acted when you found out about him paying for Chris’s medical bills all those years ago. So tell us how you could go and hurt Evan?” Ramon asks.
“You're both right and I need to live with the fact that I have hurt my son but please tell him I'm sorry” Athena says and she hangs up.
Helena and Ramon hang up and they understand Athena but they are siding with their son in law.
Both adults come back into the house and Buck and know that it was Athena calling but they don't say anything.
“OK I'm making my famous Tamales tonight and I want you Ramon to help me and your sister in the kitchen” Abuela says.
“Mamma it's been a while since I've cooked,” Ramon says.
“Ramon Diaz, you will be helping me and it's time you got back to your roots as I know I taught you how to make mexican basic dishes” Abuela says.
“Yes Mamma you did” Ramon says and his cheeks go red.
“Abuelo got told off” Chris says laughing.
“Yes he did” Helena says and she smirks.
Back at station 118 2 people enter the firehouse and they look around.
Hen sees 2 strangers walk in and she wonders who they are so she goes over to them.
“Excuse me, do you need any help?” Hen asks.
“We are looking for Captain Nash, we understand that this is his firehouse” The male stranger asks.
“Yes, it's his shift. Come with me and I'll show you where he is” Hen says.
Hen leads the two strangers up the stairs and Bobby is in the kitchen with Athena.
“Bobby, these people would like to speak to you” Hen says and she steps aside to reveal the two newcomers.
Bobby and Athena look up and they see who Hen is talking about.
“Thank you Hen I'll handle things from here” Bobby says.
Hen goes back to what she was doing and she wonders who these people are.
“I'm Captain Nash, what can I do for you?” Bobby asks.
“Captain Nash my name is Phillip Buckley and this is my wife Margaret and we are Evan's biological parents” Phillip says.
Bobby and Athena are shocked it's been 25 years since they last heard those names and they can't believe that they are face to face with the Buckley’s.
“How did you know Bobby worked here?” Athena asks.
“I take it your sergeant Athena Grant- Nash?” Margaret asks.
“That's correct,” Athena says.
“Well to answer your question we went back to social services and we asked about Evan's adoption and since he is over 18 we were allowed access and since it wasn't a closed adoption the social worker was allowed to give us details plus we willingly gave up our son for his own safety” Margaret says.
“Once we were allowed to look at the file we made a list of yours and your wife's name and we looked through the public records and found out where you lived and we also found out that this is where Evan is” Phillip says.
“What are you two doing here?” Athena asks.
“We would like to speak to Evan and get to know him” Margaret says.
“So it has nothing to do with your daughter suddenly appearing in Los Angeles” Athena says.
“Maddie is here?” Margaret asks.
“You didn't know?” Bobby asks.
“We haven't spoken to our daughter since she was 19 and we have cut all contact with her” Phillip says.
Bobby and Athena look at each other and now they are more confused.
“Look, we just want to speak to Evan and hopefully get to know him and be part of his life” Margaret says.
“Mr and Mrs Buckley if you leave me your number I'll tell Buck that's what Evan likes to be called and if he chooses to have contact with you I'll phone you” Bobby says.
“That's all we ask,” Phillip says.
After giving Bobby his number both Margaret and Phillip leave the firehouse.
Once the Buckley’s have left Athena turns to her husband.
“I'm going to do a background check and find out why they are in L.A” Athena says.
“No Athena you won't. Haven't you learned from what's happened with Evan that you need to stop being overprotective” Bobby says.
Athena looks hurt by what her husband says so she walks out of the firehouse.
Hen watches her friend leave the firehouse and she wonders what's happened but before she has a chance to think any more about it Bobby comes up to her.
“I need to pop out for a little bit so I'm leaving you in charge” Bobby says.
“Is this anything to do with those two people turning up and Athena walking out of here?” Hen asks.
“It's personal Hen that's all you need to know” Bobby says.
Hen nods and she doesn't ask any more questions.
Bobby leaves the firehouse and he heads to the captain's car and once inside he phones his son and Buck answers.
“Hey pops what's up?” Buck asks.
“Hey son, are you still at Helena's and Ramon's?” Bobby asks.
“Yes we are,” Buck says.
“OK I'm popping over as I need to tell you something” Bobby says.
“OK see you in a bit” Buck says and hangs up.
Bobby pulls up at Helena and Ramon's house and he turns the engine off and gets out of the car.
Bobby knocks on the door and when it opens it's Eddie who is standing in front of Bobby.
“Hey Bobby come in,” Eddie says.
“Hey everyone” Bobby calls out as he walks into the living room.
Chris gets up off the sofa and he goes and hugs Bobby.
“Hi buddy,” Bobby says, hugging Chris.
“So what's so important that you clearly needed to leave work for?” Buck asks.
“Chris, I need to speak to your papa,” Bobby says.
“OK I'll go into my room” Chris says.
“That boy is getting fed up with doing that today,” Abuela says.
“I know but we all agreed he only gets told things we think he needs to know” Buck says.
“So what do you need to tell us?” Eddie asks.
“So after your mother spoke to Helena and Ramon two people turned up and they asked Hen if they could speak to me so when she showed them up to the loft and me and your mother met them they told us who they were and it's your biological parents” Bobby says.
Buck nearly falls over and he is glad that he is sitting down.
“How did they know what firehouse to go to? Why are they even here?” Eddie asks.
“They went back to the social worker who handled your adoption and because it wasn't a closed adoption they were granted access plus its public record on who runs what firehouse. Unfortunately we don't know why they are here but they haven't spoken to your biological sister since she was 19 and that's when she was cut off from them” Bobby says.
“Did they give you their number?” Buck asks.
“Yes they did and it's your choice if you want to phone them” Bobby says and he hands over the number.
Buck takes it and he thinks about what to do.
“Look I need to leave as I need to get back but whatever you choose to do I will support you” Bobby says and he hugs his son and waves goodbye to everyone and leaves.
Buck looks at the paper with the number and now he has a choice to make.
