There is A Light That Never Goes Out
He was there again. Waiting outside the doors of the stadium. Regulus. His curls fell down, curtaining his face and his dark eyes glinted against the moonlight.
“Well look who showed up.”
Regulus just looked at James, providing no help to the conversation. That’s alright. James loves a challenge.
“I thought you weren’t coming?”
“Now when did I say that?”
God, his voice was as beautiful as he was. A slight french accent in his voice, letting the words roll off his tongue.
“Never, you just made it seem like you weren’t gonna show up. But here you are.”
“Here I am” He raised his arms and looked down at himself as if to show he was really there.
“You come alone?”
“No.”
Even starting a conversation was difficult.
“Who’d you come with?”
“My friends.”
“Are they waiting for you? I wouldn’t want to keep you.”
“No, I’m walking back.”
“So am I. Mind if I join you?”
“No, I suppose not.”
They walked in silence for a little bit. It wasn't necessarily uncomfortable, but James kept thinking of ways to fill it. He wanted to hear Regulus’ voice again.
It was strange because James always knew what to say, but for some reason, Regulus knocked him off of his game.
“Did you enjoy the game?”
“No, I’m here because I thought it was awful.” Regulus said. If this hadn’t been directly from their first conversation, James might have been offended, but instead he started laughing uncontrollably.
Regulus watched him, with an eyebrow arched.
“What, don’t tell me you’ve never even laughed before?” James prods.
“I haven’t had many opportunities.”
“Well,we’ll just have to create some then, right?”
“Do your worst.”
“Oh I intend to.” James starts racking his brain for anything that could make Regulus laugh. If his laugh was as lovely as his voice, he needed to hear it.
“Did it hurt?”
“Did what hurt?” Regulus had a tiny furrow in his brow of confusion, and it really was rather adorable.
“When you fell from heaven and landed on earth?”
Regulus scoffed and rolled his eyes.
“You know, because you’re an angel?”
“Yes, I got that, James, thank you.”
James’ breath hitched when Regulus said his name. It was like his name was made for Regulus to say it.
“I have more, if you’d like me to continue?”
“Oh, please. I’m enthralled by this.” Regulus said, very obviously not enthralled by this.
“Enthralled. You use such big words.” James said through his laughter.
“I’m sorry, I’m sure you don’t understand.”
James actually had to stop walking for a moment because he was doubled over with laughter.
“You’re so funny, Regulus.” he said through his laughter.
“I’m really not, but thank you.”
After a few minutes of silence passes, Regulus spoke again,
“I believe you were in the process of… picking me up?”
“Oh, right. Are you a magician, Regulus? Because everything else disappears when I look at you.”
James could see a small smile forming at the corners of Regulus’ lips. He wanted to freeze this moment and capture that smile all for himself, like no one else got to have it.
“Kiss me if I’m wrong, but dinosaurs still exist right?”
So what if James was feeling a little bold? He would just shoot his shot and see what happens.
“I will not be kissing you.”
“But aren’t I wrong?” James batted his eyelashes.
“No, actually. Some form of dinosaurs still exist. Chickens are the closest living relative to the T-Rex.”
“Oh, really? I guess you do learn something new everyday.”
“With you I’d imagine that’s not hard.”
James scoffed and put a hand to his chest as if he got stabbed be an imaginary sword,
“You wound me, Regulus.”
“That was the point, yes. And your pickup lines suck, by the way.”
“I will not stand for this beratement.” James said with a mock gasp.
“Have they ever worked? I’m genuinely curious.”
“Are they working on you now?”
“No.”
“Then no they have not.”
“Wow, that surprises me” Regulus drawled, drawing out the ‘wow’. He’s not surprised.
“I have better ones.” James offered. “You might not like them, though.”
“I’ll be the judge of that.”
James was suddenly a little nervous.
“Are you a gardener? Because you make my tree grow.”
Regulus’ eyes went wide and his face turned a bright shade of pink. He gave a very violent blink and stopped walking abruptly.
“I, Um- You-” He stammered.
“Regulus, breathe, okay.” If Regulus hadn’t seemed so genuinely distressed, James might have found this all very funny.
“You- that one was… better.” Regulus practically whispered it, and as soon as he did, he dropped his gaze to the ground. His face turned even more pink, which James didn’t think was possible.
“Oh, you liked that one, huh?”
“No, it was stupid.” Regulus resumed walking at a very fast pace. So much so that James had to rush to catch up with him again.
“Mhm, okay.”
The rest of their walk was in silence, but James caught Regulus sneaking glances at him many times.
“This is me.” Regulus cleared his throat and gestured up to the apartment building they were standing in front of.
“Thank you for the walk, James.”
“Of course, it was the highlight of my day.” Regulus blushed fiercely again at that.
“You seem to be wrong a lot.” Regulus was gazing into his eyes now. James could swear Regulus was undoing his mind through the sharp look he was sending.
“Do I?”
“Maybe I’ll take you up on your offer sometime.”
“What offer?”
James had the very strong urge to reach out and touch Regulus’ face. He desperately wanted to know if his jaw was as sharp as it looked.
“Kiss me if I’m wrong,” Regulus quoted.
Before James could even process what he said, Regulus had already turned and was inside the building by now.
“I would very much like to do that!” James called out to no one.
He smiled to himself as he turned and started walking the direction he came from.
