I've messed with ages a lot in this fic, mostly to age people down. There's two reasons for this. Firstly, I needed there to be a big enough age gap between Philinda and their children to make sense. Secondly, I think that in general, the age range where being a spy, specifically in the field, is a viable career choice is pretty small. We basically never see anyone older than Coulson in SHIELD. The US military also has an age limit of (I think) 62, and that's for people who aren't even in the field. This also kind of explains how everyone I aged down kept their clearance levels. They're mostly about the average age for field agents ((20's-30's) except for Philinda), but they're all very competent. Plus, career ending injuries are very common as well.
I also kind of accounted for this when I changed the clearance level system. It’s now split into 3 sections, like the academies. For instance, Fitzsimmons are level 6 sciops, but only level 3 comms. Skye’s level 9 comms, but only a 3 ops. Other than comms agents, everyone has at least two clearances. That’s because as agents rise in their specialties, they get harder tasks, meaning they need more info. So someone who’s a high level ops agent, like Bobbi (who happens to have three clearances bc of her bio phd), would need a higher comms clearance because her missions require her to have as much info as possible.
