A God, An Avatar, and Fun
Nathan was driving them home, exhausted from being out longer than he expected when Thoth appeared in the back seat. Jasper, being the only one who could see Thoth, smirked when they realized the god had arrived, waiting for him to say something.
“My Avatar, what is your plan for the rest of your day?” he asked, already knowing he wasn’t going to like the answer. His Avatar had a pattern that he knew they were unlikely to break it.
Shrugging, Jasper said, “I was thinking of taking a nap. Dealing with people in the courtroom takes a lot out of me after all.” Thoth hadn’t been expecting anything else, but that didn’t stop Nathan from sighing.
“You do remember you have another case to work on, right?” Nathan asked Jasper, mostly ignoring the presence in the car he can’t see or hear. Despite knowing that he wouldn’t be able to see the god, he looked in the rear-view mirror, still only to be greeted by his opaque reflection. Sometimes he wished that he could hear the god all the time, but if Thoth wanted him to know something then he’s sureJasper would tell him. Not to mention the fact he still has trouble addressing entities he can’t see.
“I can work on it later, there’s still a few weeks till the next case goes before the judge,” Jasper responded to his exasperated friend, grinning. Everyone in the car knew what that meant was going to actually happen.
“So you mean you’re going to have me do most of the work, again,” Nathan said with a sigh. That’s usually how it has been going since he started working with Jasper. After so long, he didn’t mind it as much, especially knowing that his friend meant the best. Jasper had a habit of waiting till the night before they were in the courtroom to get everything in order, which seemed to work well, but Nathan couldn’t let them keep doing that in good conscious.
Smiling, Jasper replied saying, “Isn’t that what I pay you to do?” Both Nathan and Thoth groaned at that. All three of them knew that, in fact, he wasn’t getting paid to do the majority of the work.
“He doesn’t get paid nearly enough to do all your work, little Magi,” Thoth said exasperatedly. He loved his Avatar, but that didn’t mean that they couldn’t still get on his nerves.
With a smirk, Jasper said, “They also couldn’t do it without me.” Neither Thoth nor Nathan was impressed, even though the latter didn’t know what Jasper was responding to. The rest of the drive went by with just as much chatting, which Nathan found nice. He will always be grateful to Jasper, for helping him out when no one else would and for letting him with them. Even though he knew that they didn’t think he owed them anything, he felt like he owed them the world or, if nothing else for letting him feel normal again.
When they got home, Nathan went to start gathering information about the next case, knowing that Jasper wouldn’t. Nathan also liked making sure that the evidence was gathered legally and printing what he found online immediately so that there was physical proof. He had forgotten to print immediately one time and then the site was taken down, so he wasn’t going to make the same mistake again. While he went to get evidence, Jasper went to take a nap. They weren’t lying when they said they were tired from going to the courtroom. Barely a minute after their head hit the pillow they were asleep.
It was ten in the evening when Jasper woke up, well-rested but not in the right mental state to work on their case. They sat up, stretched, and then tiptoed into the living room, curious because they could hear Thoth ranting about something through the wall. They had gotten used to hearing him rant through the walls after Nathan moved in. They had wanted their god and their friend to become closer, which ended up with Nathan recording videos of Thoth to post. Almost all the comments on the videos were comments on how realistic the CGI was.
“It was proven centuries ago that the Earth is round! Overall, the humans in this current day that believe that the Earth is flat either need to re-educate themselves or should get a psychiatric evaluation,” the god finished his rant with. As soon as Jasper was sure that Nathan wasn’t recording their god, they burst out laughing, Nathan was only barely holding his laughter in.
“That seems a bit over-dramatic, don’t you think birdy?” Jasper got out when they finally got their laughter under control. They had a grin on their face as Thoth looked over with a look of mock shock on his face.
“How could my Avatar say such a thing!” he started, purposefully being over-dramatic for a moment before getting more serious and mumbling, “I have trouble believing that people who disregard proven facts don’t need some help in one way or another.” That caused Jasper to laugh a bit more and Nathan chuckled along. The god turned away from them, a small smile on his face. Nathan took a moment before turning to Jasper.
“You know that you’re not going to be able to sleep anymore tonight, right?” he asked his friend. Nathan was many things, and a worrier was one of them especially because Jasper gave him many reasons to worry.
“Don’t worry Nathan, I’m sure I’ll find something good to do,” they reassured their friend. After Nathan sighed they gave him a wink and said, “I’m gonna head out. I’ll be out late so don’t wait up for me.” All Nathan could get himself to do was sigh at his grinning friend as they went through the nearest door.
“Any idea on where they’re going?” Nathan asked the god still in the room, slight concern on his face. The god softly patted his shoulder, comforting the poor man.
Before disappearing, Thoth said, “I believe they plan to go make a friend.”
