Thoth and His Young Avatar
author
Summary
Thoth has a young Avatar, which isn't much of a problem. It annoys the god however when his Avatar decides to go make chaos, whether intentionally or not. He is also not the biggest fan of his Avatar getting into dangerous situations almost every day it seems, but he will deal with it because he was grown fond of his young Avatar and would see them happy from doing good than to leave their side. The first chapter is a bit more of an introduction to how others end up seeing them, chapter two goes to Thoth's and shows more of the home life dynamic.

A God, An Avatar, And a Roommate

Thoth knew that his Avatar was going to have done something during the time that Horus asked him to have a meeting. He knew his Avatar was bad at sitting still, which he could plan for, and if he had been paying more attention to what had been going on around New York he would have been able to know what his Avatar would do while he was away. The god was content when he arrived back at his Avatar's apartment and found them resting. He had been away from his Avatar for around five hours and was concerned that his Avatar might have tried to do something reckless again. He maintained concealed, invisible to even his Avatar if they woke up, and sat there for a moment before walking into the living room. Like usual, Nathan sat there watching the news. Nathan had become his Avatar's roommate about a year and a half ago and had become close friends since.

After a few minutes, Thoth made a sound approximating a cough to let the other person in the room know he was there as he unconcealed his presence. Thanks to his Avatar putting many runes around the place if Thoth wanted someone else in the apartment to be able to see or hear him then they can. Nathan, startled, whips his head around before letting go of his breath upon seeing the god.

“When am I going to stop being startled by you appearing?” Nathan said rhetorically, but Thoth decided to still answer him.

“When you are able to sense my presence,” was what the ibis-headed god told the man. Nathan sighed, before adjusting his position on the couch. Instead of facing the TV, he was now lying down on the whole couch. Thoth was fine with that, he didn’t like sitting on the couch anyways, it was unconformable for his long body.

Thoth clears his thought before asking Nathan if his Avatar had done anything while he was away. He was not going to make the same mistake of assuming his Avatar did nothing while he was away just because they were asleep. He could simply look into the vast knowledge to know the answer, but he has been stopping doing that as much after his Avatar told him it was making him “cold and distant” and “made him see tragedies as statistics rather than the terrible situation that it was”. Since then, he has been trying to see things from a more “human” perspective, which included him not using his powers as much as he used to. He still knew about everything that was directly around him, but not what was going on everywhere.

“He fought some aliens,” Nathan told him, snapping him out of his thoughts. He blinked for a moment while the words processed before his feathers fluffed up and posture straightened. His Avatar did what! He started pacing, body tense, thinking of the possibilities that would cause such a situation, much less that Nathan would know. What did the aliens do to incite his Avatar to battle? His Avatar didn’t like to fight but could be very brutal if their emotions were high. Was his Avatar injured?

“He did it to save people,” Nathan continued after sitting up straighter, seeing the god’s agitated state. “The aliens had invaded New York and were trying to conquer Earth, or at least that’s what the news outlets say.” Thoth had stopped pacing, having trouble processing what he was being told. “So, they fought aliens in New York to help save people,” Nathan started with a finality in his voice, “As well as no one seemed to notice them, so you’re safe.” Thoth stood still a moment while he processed what he had just been told. While he had been away there had been aliens in New York, and his Avatar had fought them. After a moment the god seemed to deflate before walking over to a bar stool next to the kitchen counter and took a seat. The stool creaked at the sudden weight and the careless nature of which the god sat.

“Were they at least not fighting alone?” the god asked the man in front of him with a weary voice. Over the past years that he has had this Avatar, he could swear that he has aged a thousand years and loses a feather almost every month, though he never did lose any feathers.

“There were six other people fighting, one of which called himself Thor. Apparently, they were fighting Loki. Iron Man and Captain America were also fighting the aliens, though I didn’t know the Captain was still alive,” Nathan informed the god with suspicion in his voice. Thoth laughed airily at that, understanding the man's apprehension to both the Asgardians and the man out of time.

“Not knowing is understandable, Steve Rodgers was only recovered in recent years and was trapped in ice before the. As for Thor and Loki, Asgard has not been interfering in ‘Midgard’ in many years. They are not a god like myself, more of an alien with an exceptional life span,” Thoth told Nathan before getting up. Even if his Avatar had saved some lives, he still had work to do in order to make money. He entered their room before gently nudging them.

“My little magi,” Thoth said softly, continuing to nudge his Avatar, “You must get up.” They responded with a groan as they peeked their eyes open at their god. Smiling at them, he offered them his hand to encourage them to get up. They weakly batted his hand away before sitting up on their bed and looked up at Thoth, squinting their eyes at him in annoyance.

“You need to work on your case, and probably take a shower,” Thoth said while wandering over to the room door. “I suggest a shower first, that way there might be some food ready so you can start working with energy.” His Avatar groaned louder this time before wandering to their dresser. With it obvious what their choice was, Thoth made his way back to the main room where Nathan seemed to have started making a few boxes of macaroni and cheese. Thoth smiled, knowing he could count on Nathan to have his Avatars back, as well as tell him what his Avatar has been up to. He remembered the time before Nathan lived with his Avatar, he almost always had to use his power to figure out what his Avatar had been up to because they would continually try to brush it off as “nothing big” or “nothing important”.

Nathan started humming while making the box pasta, content with the looming god seeming to stare through him. It was a regular occurrence, happening when the god was either lost in thought or using his power over knowledge to glean the current state of the world which left the god stuck in his position while actively trying to gain exact knowledge of something that is currently happening. Stirring the pasta, he kept an ear out for his friend. He is always worried they might get hurt, even though they are good at avoiding it. He could heal very quickly, but his friend is human and has never gotten hurt that he knows about, which means his friend could die from even a paper cut in his mind and if something happened to his friend he would be alone again. He didn’t want to be alone again. He also worked as the secretary at his friend's firm, and would be out of a job should something happen to his friend, but that wasn’t as important to him.

Thoth heard the water shut off, signaling that his Avatar was done in the shower. He decided to take a seat on one of the tall bar stools again as he waits, it wouldn’t be long till his Avatar would be out. When his Avatar felt their room, ready for what the day has in store, Nathan strained the macaroni noodles. It only took a few more moments for the macaroni and cheese to be ready and for the two corporeal people to start eating. Thoth watched as Nathan started going over the most recent case his Avatar has taken on while they ate.

“So, right now the mom is saying there’s a conspiracy against her, and that her ex-husband has bribed the police and multiple doctors,” Nathan told his boss with a bored tone. It was obvious that Nathan didn’t think there was any conspiracy, why would there be so much conspiracy against one insignificant person? The fact that they were representing the father also told him all that he needed to know. If there really was something that big trying to force kids away from their mom, then his friend would have not accepted the father’s case. They had this in the bag.
