Goodbye, My Danish Sweetheart
Gwen felt her eyes water as she watched the news with you. She could feel her heart beating, feeling it against her ribcage as anxiety filled her, making her throat clench. "Gwen, when you go to that museum. They'll try to.." "Yeah." Gwen sniffled out, fingers gripping her thighs and pushing her knees close to her face. "I'll be fine. I-I have to be fine, or.." She chokes up, looking away from the screen and letting go of her legs, pulling on her mask. "Gwe–" "I'll..I'll see you later, ___." She ignores the way you call out her name, ignores the way you look at her with confusion and fear as she catches a glimpse of your face once more, before swinging to the museum.
Gwen can feel the buzzing of her phone, hear it ringing with little patience, but she stubbornly ignores it as she fights to protect the civilians–her civilians. It's only after she confronted with her dad, the man pointing a gun at her, does she feel her heart buzz along with the wretched phone. "Dad." Gwen manages to choke out, pulling off her mask and revealing a mess of blonde hair and teary eyes. The gun remains on her, his hand still on the trigger, and she can't do anything but stand there and put her hands up.
Now, nothing feels right when she finds herself at your door, knocking on it with no one by her side. Gwen feels conflicted, even finding herself thinking about going back to her dad and pretending like nothing happened or that she didn't come here until she hears the clicks of locks, followed by your face. Gwen can't believe how old you look despite it being some time since she left, how dark your eyebags are and how red your eyes have become. It makes her heart cry at the sight and makes Gwen choke back a breath of shock. "Gwendolyn..?" "Hi. Could I..could I come in? Please?"
"You've been gone for months, Gwen." "I kn–" "No! No you don't. I've looked everywhere, I've asked everywhere! I asked your dad, I asked the station, try to see if you were in custody or–or just something to make me feel better about losing my girlfriend!" Gwen can't help but feel even worse as you find yourself crying. How much it hurts her to see you in pain for something so..simple to her. "It felt like years passed since I saw you, since I heard from you, and now you're just gonna waltz into my life again like nothing's changed? Like..like you didn't make me wait for a call, a text–anything to show me you were alive and well?!" "___, I'm sorry!" "I can't just accept a 'sorry', Gwendolyn! Not after..whatever the fuck that was! I thought you were dead and no one had the heart to say anything! Not even my parents told me anything." "I–" You turn from her, arms crossed and expression unreadable. "Get out of my house." "Wh..what? ___, we can work this o–" "Get the fuck out. I don't want to see you again." She can't help but look at you, bewildered. "You're going to break up with me? Just like that? No..no time to think about it, no break, no–" "I'm done with you. You kept me waiting for months, kept me worried for months. I can't be with someone like that, I-I don't want someone like that, Gwen! I love you but you make it so hard when you leave like that!" Gwen can't bring herself to look at you, not after what happened. Your house, once warm and familiar to her, becomes cold and foreign in a heartbeat, making Gwen wrap her arms around her with a frown. "Okay. I'll go."
The next time Gwen sees you, she's trying to bring an anomaly into custody with her friends. She can't help but stare at you, a wide smile on your face and your arm wrapped around some girl. Gwen knows she shouldn't feel this way, knows that her heart shouldn't ache and crumble like it did that very night you left her, but it still wounds her to the point of shedding a tear. "You alright? 'Nother anomaly Miggy didn't report to us?" It's Hobie's voice that sobers Gwen enough to bring her back to reality, wiping her eye and pulling her mask back down before turning to her friend. "Yeah. I'm okay." He looks at her for a moment, unsure of whether to pull her close and pester her about more details or to leave her alone and bring it up later until he hears Pavitr calling for them. "I'll..I'll tell you later." Gwen promises quickly, before running off towards where Pavitr is.
