Only To Stay Stuck Dreaming of Our Firstborn
Mayday Parker was an anomaly to Miguel not in the way that she should've never happened, although that is very true, but in annicer way. She was always good at surprising Miguel and he thinks that she really takes after her dad. It wasn't uncommon for the kid to worm her way into some issue that her father had to very quickly counter act. She has a knack of making things bad for herself and getting saved. So MJ thinks that she really takes after her father.
Thats alright though because Peter wasn't the worst because he was a good guy for all his wrong. Perhaps that's why both MJ and Miguel are attracted what is considered a bad idea.
The only difference is that whe Mayday moves the hair away from her bears eyes it's a display of nothing but love and it's enough to make make Miguel cry and one time it actually made MJ cry.
When Peter does it though, he's sorry and in his eyes there's something about it that pushed MJ away before moving her close and forced Miguel closer. What can they say? They're suckers for sorry men.
Miguel thinks that Mayday understands this which is why the girl would always smile and look between the two when Peter would hand her over. Miguel was catching on to her game and he simply refuses to lose. So he takes it upon himself to refuse any offers to hold her.
Both she and Peter were upset, but Peter was just more confuse than anything else. Mayday would stick her tongue out something he swear Peter trained her to do when he said.
"Aww. Come on."
Peter denys it but it still happens and Miguel still denies holding Mayday it's a strange punishment for the both of them, but if it ain't broke.
Mayday was without a doubt a mastermind with having already comprehended expression and situational awareness, something that only happens about the age of four, Miguel knew that she was brilliant. So maybe she takes after her mother a bit more than he thought. She mastered other things two like sneaking up on people. So when Miguel turns his head and finds a dangling baby his first words are simply.
"You got me May."
She babbles happily hlwhile hanging upside down. Miguel looks at her and Lyla flashes around Mayday assessing the situation.
"I don't think it's good for babies to be upside down for this long."
"Right." Miguel says cutting the web catching Mayday before she falls too far.
Miguel's cradling Mayday awkwardly but her head and her bottom and it occurs to him that he hasn't held her like this for almost a year, and before her he hasn't held anyone like this in almost a dozen years. He doesn't take the memory lightly and feels himself frown before he can feel much else. Once again Mayday notices the change in Miguel's demeanor and she flips herself around in his hand against his will.
They stare at eachother for a bit saying nothing because half of the party can't speak and the other half is so sad that anything thay escapes his mouth is a quiet cry. It's heartbreaking really and it's also really really quiet. Miguel swears he hears and sees his memories in front of him.
This may be it for him, he thinks. Lyla was right and he had worked himself to psychosis, off to the loony bin for him!
The feeling is only more solidified when he feels a small heat press against his cheek. It's not enough to be sure but it's enough to know that somethings touching him and when he opens his eyes he wants to see Gabriella teasing him for crying at the end of Titanic but it's not.
He does see a hand but its much paler than Gabriellas would ever be it's also softer than his daughters slightly calloused hands had developed in to. There's a moment of confusion because he was just experiencing what wa sprobably the most lucid hallucination ever and suddenly he's being grounding by round cheeks and big red hair, and blue eyes that are crying for him.
He's a mess and he turned the baby into one to. Mayday really takes after him. So he allows his tears to be sloppily patted at because as great as Mayday was she was still a motor- stunted baby. She babbles and Miguel hears a word that he's heard come from her mouth before.
"Daddy!" He never heard it said with a sad voice and addressing him but it moves him all the same. He refuses the title and hugs her closer.
"Sorry Mayday daddy's not here."
She's quick to correct him as she wraps her arms as far as she can around his shoulders.
"Daddy."
Miguel wants to refuse but it's been so long since hesheard that and it's been even longer since he's gotten to hold Mayday like this so he just holds her and whispers into her shoulder apologies and promises.
Things have gotten less emotional but tears are still falling down Miguels face. They're slow and rare but they're still there and they still soak Maydays shirt.
"I see you found her."
Moguel startles at the sudden voice but relaxes a bit when he see sits just Peter.
He scoffs and hides his face.
"More like she found me. You should really keep her on a tighter leash Parker." The last name slips out if his mouth before he can notice but the effect is instant.
"Been a while since I heard that one."
Miguel keeps his back to Peter who moves close to them.
" Are you going back to shutting me out?"
"No."
"Then look at me. Please."
It's a small request but such a heavy task. Miguel considers his options and decides that turning around would be the best of the all so he does so with a pout. God Peter loved sorry men and Miguel fit that definition even without the pout and tear streaks.
"She got you."
"I suppose so."
Peter takes Mayday from Miguel before making a hammock and placing her on it.
"She's good at that. It might be worth it to get back to your weekly babysitting gig."
"Please I do that enough with you."
"Hey I think I'm pretty good at my job."
"Well of course you do."
It's a small friendly disagreement and it gets Miguel back to feeling whatever emotions he feels instead of sad but Petrler can't help but scratch the itch at the back of his head.
"How long were you there."
"How much do you mind me seeing?"
Miguel sighs to himself a bit while rubbing his brow.
"You wanna talk about it."
"Another day, Peter."
It's a small win. An admission of trust that he'd though he lost and it's enough to carry him through their entire visit. Somewhere along the line Mayday wakes up and their conversations focus a bit more on entertaining her than actually conversing but neither if then mind. It's the first thing Peter talks about when he lands on MJ'S roof after leaving HQ because Miguel swore to him that leaving her for the night was okay because they both needed it. And they did.
"He's so good with her you know?"
There's a goofy smile on his face and MJ rolls her eyes.
"He was a dad."
"Yeah but it's not like I got to see that. He's so careful with her but I think he rubbing off on her, I swear she glared at me yesterday."
"Was her diaper full?"
"No!"
"Actually, maybe but I did a smell test so, probably not."
MJ just gives him a hard stare and continues sipping on her drink.
Miguel on the other hand very quickly remembers why he gave up the whole babysitting thing. It didn't take long for Mayday to make a mess of his lab and while he wishes he could say that the amount of joy he got from hearing her giggle made it all worth it, he couldnt. Truth be told Miguel didn't really start feeling anything other than stress until nap time hit and Mayday had collapsed on to the makeshift hammock Peter strung up a few hours ago.
Miguel finds himself collapsing down beside her and he takes a while to get used to the size because it was made for one medium sized Spiderman. He was not that, nor was the tiny perpetrator that rested atop him. He was tired to say the least and the hammock was more comfortable than he thought. So he gives Peter credit and relaxes.
He feels Maydays chest rise and fall against his and he's overwhelmed with warmth. It boils in his stomach and makes its way through him in a small surge.
"She's good at that."
Right now Miguel feels like he swallowed a piece of the sun and that feeling carries him to sleep where he dreams of him and Mayday. They have fun and they grow together her more than him bamecause in his dream, he can do what he wants to. There's a flash of what he had and ot hurts him a bit but wants what he's got and what he can have so he pushes away the thoughts stuck on Gabriella. And how he never got to see her win the championship with her soccer team. Or how he never got to see her in her dress for her Quince let alone in her cap and gown for graduation.
He mourns what he never had in a dream and he embraces what he could have. So when he wakes up and finds Mayday slobbering over his suit he rolls his eyes with a chuckle and picks her up and cradles her like her father would. And sings to her in a language she doesn't know.
He has time in the future to fix that though so he doesnt worry too much.
Peter returns to find Miguel rocking Mayday softly to the tune of a song he's never heard and he smiles. There something so healing about allowing yourself to face the things you feared. In Miguel's case it was fatherhood and it still is but now its just a bit easier to imagine his life as a father. Even if he imagines it with a certain red haired baby and spandex wearer. After all Maudau takes after her father so much, but she takes after him so Miguel thinks it's fair game.
"You like him so what?"
"MJ listen to yourself we only split up like a fee months ago."
"And I've moved on you should to."
"I know bu- wait you're already seeing someone?"
"I didn't say thay but."
Peter watches from the shadows for the second time that day and he's beginning to feel a bit like a stalker so he steps forward and speaks up.
"Youre a natural."
Its acompliment but it hurts like an insult and it breaks another dam that Miguel hadn't known was there. He doesn't cry but he gets teary eyed.
"She makes it easy, she's a great kid."
He really missed being a dad.
