โ CHAPTER ONE ๐ธ๏ธ โ
AN AWKWARD silence filled stan's office as (y/n) sits herself down on the seat next to miguel, she clenched her fists and did her best to avoid locking eyes with him. miguel on the other hand couldn't look away from her, it's been years since he last saw her. technically the breakup was his fault, but that doesn't mean he didn't regret it.
stan cleared his throat gaining the two's attention, "i'm glad that the two of you already know each other, instead of waisting time in getting to know each other we can go straight to business."
(y/n) grimaced at his uncle's words, she would have preferred to work with a complete stranger than her ex boyfriend who suddenly broke up with her. there's also the fact that miguel blocked and ghosted her on everything, so when (y/n) found out she was pregnant she had no way of communicating with him.
"i already told miguel everything about your situation with maria," stan said pulling (y/n) away from her thoughts.
"i'd like to help you find a treatment for your daughter's condition," miguel quietly spoke, his eyes still on (y/n). she looked away from stan and looked at him, her big (e/c) eyes stared into his red ones. (y/n) offered him a small grateful smile, "thank you."
stan watched miguel and (y/n)'s interaction, he may be old but he's not stupid. he knows that there's something more happening to these two than what meets the eye, especially knowing the fact that they did once date. "well then," stan says standing up from his chair. "i'll leave the two of you to start talking about your game plan. i'll be with my wife and great niece if you need me." he then left the ex-lovers alone in his office.

miguel and (y/n) sat in awkward silence, the tension between them is so thick you could cut it with a knife. nobody wanted to make the first move and reach out to the other. miguel's eyes never left the woman seating beside him, he just missed her so much and it pains him every time he remembers how badly he fucked up with her a few years ago. the silence is killing him, he wanted to reach out to her first and ask her how she's been, the milestones she's reached, and he also wanted to ask her about her daughter.
(y/n) knows that miguel is staring at her. she knows that the silence is slowly eating him up and that he badly wanted to talk, but she couldn't face him. after all the things this man has put her through she just can't casually talk to him like nothing had happened between them. but (y/n) knew that she has to talk to him eventually so might as well do it now. she cautiously turned to her side, her gaze slowly meeting his.
"so...you have a daughter," miguel says anxiously which made (y/n) froze. she didnt know what to say. should she tell miguel that maria is her daughter and that she tried her best to let him know about her pregnancy but could not find a way to reach him? or should she just lie to him about their daughter and pretend that she's happily married someone else?
miguel was beating himself up in his mind, out of all the things he could have started this conversation with he says that. he thought that (y/n) may have taken what he said negatively when he noticed her stiffen up and fiddle with your ringโ the same ring he gave you when you first started dating. he tore his eyes away from your hands and looked at you again.
"i didn't mean that negatively," he says letting out a nervous laugh. "what i'm trying to say is thatโ"
"she's yours you know," (y/n) whispered quietly cutting miguel off. his mouth went dry as (y/n) rambled on. "iโ a month after you broke up with me almost four years ago i thought i was sick, i was rushed to the hospital and found out i was pregnant."
(y/n) paused, she looked at miguel waiting for any sort of outburst or reaction but he merely looked at the ground waiting for her to continue, so she did. "i tried so hard to contact you, to find you. i tried calling you, texting you, emailing you, heck i even reached out to the old company you work for only to find out that you resigned. at first i thought that you were just probably in your grieving phase but days turned into months and eventually i made to terms that you just didn't want anything to do with me anymore, so i stopped."
miguel looked at the ground, his guilt eating him up. if only he wasn't such a coward back then, then he would have been there for (y/n) and their daughter, he would've been there for (y/n) during her pregnancy, and he would've been there during his daughter's firsts.
"i'm sorry," miguel whispered, his voice hoarse as his tears stream down his face. he reached out to (y/n), taking her hands and bringing them up to his lips. "i should have been there for youโ i should have been there for the both of you."
never in a million years have (y/n) imagined that she would be facing her ex again and talking about this, their daughter, their past relationship. a slight pang of guilt and sadness weighed down on (y/n)'s heart as she watched the man in front of her break down. she gently pulled her hands away from miguel and pulled him into a hug.
"it's fine miguelโ"
"it's not," miguel whispered into the crook of (y/n)'s neck, cutting her off. "because of my stupidity, my cowardice, iโ i wasn't there during your pregnancy. i wasn't there to hold your hair up in the morning when you had morning sickness, i wasn't there to get you the weird food combinations you craved, i wasn't there to support youโ hold your hand when you gave birth, and i wasn't there to witness all my daughter's first. her first walk, first word, first birthday, first haircut."
(y/n) couldn't do anything but listen to him, because to be honest what can she say? she didn't want to say anything to invalidate his feelings or make him feel more bad at himself, she also didn't want to say anything or promise anything that she'll probably regret layer on. so she just sat there holding him, stroking his hair and waited for him to calm down.
"you know," (y/n) started. "you may have missed maria's firsts, but you're here now." in all honesty she didn't really know where she's going with, (y/n) blamed everything on how she felt at the moment because if it was any under circumstances she would have probably acted more hostile, colder, towards miguel. but seeing him like this? it broke through the tough exterior she built during the years, and that scared her.
miguel looked at her with wide eyes, "you'd welcome me back into your lives that easily?" he asked.
"no. iโ i wouldn't tell maria everything all at once. we have to start small, i can't just tell her that we randomly found her father after all these years and she may only be three but she's so smart for her age. and don't get me wrong, i'm not doing this for me, for you, or for us. i'm doing this for my daughter, because even though we may not be together i don't want my daughter to grew up without her father."
miguel's heart broke a little when (y/n) dismissed the possibility of the two of them getting back together, but you know what? miguel was fine with this, at least for now. he just wanted to be in (y/n) and maria's lives. in the future he'll work hard to gain back (y/n)'s trust and possibly her love, but for now he just wanted to focus on meeting his daughter.
"now that we've talked this out," (y/n) says as she stood up. she then held her hand out towards miguel, "i think it's about time you meet your daughter."
