a change of perspective

some random alleyway (Earth-138)

“Where's this ‘so called villain’ you abruptly called me out here for?” Miles grumbled, walking along the other three arachnids down a dark alleyway. He wasn’t angry, more so annoyed at the sudden call to action. He knew it was all a part of the deal of being spiderman, but right now he wanted nothing more than to be at home and leave off right where he was before he was interrupted.

“Why do you sound so tense?” Gwen asked, shooting him a look of confusion.

“I think he’s having girl troubles!” Pav teased, cupping his hands together near his heart

Gwen's expression shifted as she looked between the two. “Wha- Miles you have a girlfriend?” she asked, excitement in her voice.

“Good for you, man!” Hobie added.

“No!” He groaned, rolling his eyes. “Can we just focus on the mission?”

Pav and Gwen exchange knowing looks behind Miles back as Hobie pushed on the topic further. “So then, she’s not your girlfriend yet?”

“No! I don’t even know her, we met like- eleven hours ago.” he sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“What does she look like?” Gwen asked plainly.

“Is she taller than me?” Pav questioned, shooting a web to hang upside down.

“What does any of this have to do with the mission?!” Miles exasperated as they neared the end of the alleyway. “In fact- what are we even looking for? Nobody’s filled me in!”

As if summoning him by asking, the vulture swooped in, taking Miles in his grasp.

“Ey! You found what we’re looking for mate!” Hobie quipped, breaking the silence. Gwen and Pav shot a look at Hobie, them all pausing for a moment looking at each other blankly, before quickly swinging after Miles.

“So is there a reason you’re kidnapping me or is this just a side quest?” Miles yawned, as if he weren’t at least 30 feet in the air.

“To send a message.” The vulture spat back, before a web tugged on his claw-like-gloves, causing him to drop Miles.

“You ought to stop conversing with birds, they eat spiders y’know.” Hobie jokes, catching Miles with one arm, the other to reel them closer to the Vulture, where Gwen and Pav were already assessing the winged villain

“God- there's four of you?” the Vulture grumbled, making a sharp turn, trying to shake the teens off him.

“Isn’t it great? We have matching bracelets!” Pav chirped, shooting a web directly in the Vulture's face, causing him to screech as his flying went unsteady, shaking the teens off to land on the sides of buildings.

“That is just about the lamest thing I’ve ever heard.” The vulture sneered from the air, shaking the webs off.

Gwen took the opportunity of his distraction to launch herself above the villain, before thwipping two webs onto both of his wings and pulling herself down, using one of her legs to puncture his back as she came into contact with him.

As he started to spiral towards the ground, Hobie used his web slinger to tie the Vulture's feet together, and pulled him down.

Shooting a connecting web, Miles quickly took over, and tied the Vulture's feet to a lamp post, hanging him upside down.

The four arachnids regrouped around the villain on the floor, Gwen tapping her watch, making it beep. “One minute, forty-three seconds, Record time!” she cheered. Pav went to high-five her which she gladly returned.

“Alright, so we good now?” Miles sighed, catching his breath.

“Yep, just have to wait for Miguel to-”

As if he had stopped listening after hearing ‘yep’, he was already summoning a portal to take him home. “See you guys next time!” he called back, walking through the portal.

The remaining three, watching it close all with the same confused look on their faces. “What’s up with him?” Gwen asked, her hand on her hip.

Hobie shrugged, “We probably interrupted his time with his lady friend.”

Pav held a hand to his mouth, grinning under his mask, “Do you think it’s getting serious?”

“Oh most definitely!” Gwen grinned, encouragingly. “They’re hitting the 12 hour mark of knowing each other soon I heard!”

a sidewalk in Brooklyn (Earth-1610)

“Y/n, I don’t think this is safe. You should turn back and go home.”

“I know what I saw, Liz.” you whisper into your phone, turning the corner, entering whatever building that weird light appeared above earlier.

“I’m not denying what you saw- I’m telling you to leave .” the girl scoffed- and although you couldn’t physically see her, you knew Eliza was probably rolling her eyes. “What if you get hurt? What if it’s a super-villain? You know those are more common in New York than they are here.” she warned, her tone becoming more stern than worried.

“Then… spiderman can save me.” you sighed, trying to concentrate as you stepped into an elevator, pressing the button for the highest floor.

“Umm.. HELLO?! How’s he gonna do that if he jumped into that weird portal thing you claim you saw.” Eliza mocked.

“Ok- I didn’t say it was a portal, I said it was a bright light.

Eliza clicked her tongue, “Righttt. A bright light that both appeared and disappeared, that spiderman also jumped through, disappearing as well.”

“You are not helping my anxiety right now, El.” you groan, before the elevator doors opened. You step out, and start looking for the rooftop access stairs, finding it almost immediately.

“Then turn around!” Eliza started as you made your way up the stairs. “You’re not even hearing me out, you could totally..” You appreciated your friend's concerns, and knew she had your best intentions at heart, but having forgotten to take your adderall earlier, you didn’t really want to focus on what she was saying. Even if it was true.

Pushing through the rooftop’s door, the breeze hits your face immediately, sending a chill down your body. You stepped out, examining the rooftop cautiously, but oddly enough there was no trace of anything. You scrunch your eyebrows together, confused, looking over the side of the building.

“HELLO?!? Are you even listening to me right now?!” Eliza screamed, causing you to almost drop your phone.

“Yeah, yeah of course.. Just give my heart a minute to restart.” you exasperated, placing a hand over where your heart was, taking a deep breath.

“There’s nothing up here, I’m heading ba-” you had started, before a speck of light that opened up over another building across the street had caught your attention. You inch closer to the side of the rooftop, observing carefully.

For a moment, nothing happened. Just an oddly placed aura- if you could call it that, floating above a building. You swallowed the lump in your throat as your heartbeat sped up.

As if on cue, New York’s masked vigilante jumped through the portal, landing just barely on the edge of the building as the portal started to close behind him. You moved to hide your body behind the rooftop’s door access wall to avoid being seen, squinting your eyes, trying to get a better look at him. Thank god you had, because again , as if on cue, spiderman looked around to see if anyone saw.

He began tapping away at what looked like a watch. It kinda looked like the one Miles had-

Oh.

Oh.

You were sure Eliza was probably yelling through the phone again trying to get your attention, but you couldn't hear anything over your heartbeat at that point. Surely you were just jumping to conclusions.

He jumped off the building, shooting a web to swing over to a building. Your building. Your eyebrows cinched together, as you stepped out from where you hid, now in plain sight. You watched him land on your building's fire escape before quickly opening up a window on the eighth floor, slipping in, confirming your assumptions.

“Ohmygod.” Your stomach turned, a hot flush flooding over your body. How could you be cold and hot at the same time?

Either you were coming back to your senses or Eliza’s voice somehow managed to get louder. “WHAT?! WHAT HAPPENED ARE YOU OKAY?!?”

Your voice was breathy and shaky, “..I have to go, Liz.”

“GOD DAMN IT ARE YOU OKAY OR SHOULD I CALL YOUR DAD??” she exasperated, pacing around her room.

“I’m fine- I just..” you were shaking your head trying to find the words. How could you have run out of words? You speak four languages. For whatever reason it was, it didn’t matter, you had to get back home. “Can I call you back?” you finally got out as you reached for the rooftop’s door handle.

“Yeah, okay just- be safe okay?” Eliza sighed.

You nodded, and for a moment forgot she couldn’t see that. “I will. I love you, bye.” You whispered, bringing your phone down from your ear and into your pocket as you made your way down the stairs.
