We Don’t Need Novocain

Hobie didn’t know why he was so nervous. He’d seen Miles’ parents countless times before, but this time was different. He was meeting them as Miles’ boyfriend, not a friend, but boyfriend. Miles meant the world to Hobie. When he’d realized he was in love with Miles, he avoided the younger teen like the plague. In hopes that the stupid feeling would go away, but it never did, in fact during that time Hobie felt devastated being away from Miles. His heart soared at the thought of Miles being anywhere near him. Stupid heart, stupid feelings, stupid Miles.

Miles, Miles, Miles was the love of his life, the punk was already sure of that. He felt butterflies in his stomach every time Miles batted his beautiful eyelashes in his direction, or when he’d come up and hug Hobie on his own without the punk having to initiate it. He hated that Miles made him feel so out of character, as if he had some sort of other secret power that made people fall in love with him, Hobie being one of his worst victims. The teen stood in his flat, waiting for Miles to text him to come over. He’d never gone to such extremes to meet a flings family, then again, he’d never actually had to meet family of his past flings and Miles wasn’t a fling.

Hobie had been the one to confess to Miles after the whole “maybe if I avoid him these feelings will go away” fiasco, Miles had come to his earth demanding to know why Hobie was avoiding him. Hobie remembers freezing up and only staring at Miles as he rambled on, bringing himself back when he saw tears rimming Miles’ eyes as he talked to Hobie

“If you’re tired of me just say it! Don’t avoid me! Tell me to my face that you never want to see me again and I’ll leave you alone. Tell me you hate me or something! Then I'll have a good reason why you’re avoiding me.” Hobie remembers taking Miles into his arms, his heart breaking when the younger teen quickly reciprocated the hug.

“I don’t-“ Hobie had begun to say, taking in a deep breath as he squeezed Miles in tighter.

“I don’t hate you.”

“Then why have you been avoiding me?” Miles said as he let go of Hobie to look him in the eyes. Hobie again felt that same ping of sadness in his heart, cursing his heart. The two had stood there frozen before Hobie said fuck it, cupping Miles’ face and kissing Miles. Miles was quick to kiss the punk back, as if he’d been feeling the same way Hobie did. He slowly pulled away from Miles, placing his forehead on his to avoid looking Miles in the eyes.

“That is why I’ve been avoiding you. S’ not right of me, but you make me crazy Morales, you make me not myself and honestly love… It scares me.” Hobie said, as he moved to make eye contact with Miles. Miles was smiling by the time Hobie had finally looked at him.

“You don’t even understand how long I’ve wanted you to do that.” Miles admitted taking Hobie by surprise.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.” Miles said as he pulled Hobie in once more. Hobie didn’t hesitate to wrap his arms around Mile’s torso, pulling him in and Miles didn’t think twice before he wrapped his arms around Hobie’s neck.

Hobie always liked to think back at their first kiss. It’ll always hold a special place in his heart, along with their first “I love you” to each other. The punk quickly shot himself back down to reality when he felt his phone buzz in his pocket, quickly taking it out seeing a message from Miles.

Miles<3: Hey babe come over. Dinners ready.

Hobie:Ight I’m omw.

Hobie quickly pocketed his phone as he quickly opened a portal into Miles’ earth.

Hobie made sure to stop somewhere to quickly buy flowers for Miles’ mom. Hobie rushed to his boyfriend’s family apartment, reaching the door. He hesitated to knock, hearing muffled voices and shuffling on the other side, but he quickly swallowed away the nervousness he was feeling before he knocked on the door. He heard as Miles shouted behind the door.

“Okay. Okay he’s here!.” Miles had said as he opened the door, pausing as he looked at Hobie. His hair no longer wicks but now in long beautiful twists, half of them resting gracefully on his shoulders and the rest atop his head in a messy bun. Hobie felt his face begin to burn.

“So I take it ya like the hair love.” Hobie said as a smug expression plastered itself on his face in an attempt to cover up his nervousness. Miles didn’t reply and continued to stare as he himself felt his face begin to burn.

“I uh…” Miles’ attempt to speak quickly cut off as another voice called out.

“Miles! Come on!” Mrs. Morales shouted as she peaked over to the front door, again Hobie felt nervousness fill his core. His mothers shout was what shook Miles out of his trance.

“Right! Sorry mami.” Miles said, turning his head towards his mom, quickly looking right back at Hobie.

“You look amazing, babe.” Miles said as he moved to grab Hobie’s hand finally spotting the bouquet of flowers, Miles smiled at Hobie. He’d ask Hobie where he got them later.

“Flowers? Really?” Miles said as he pulled Hobie into the apartment.

“It’s common courtesy sweets.” Hobie said. Miles laughed behind him as he heard the door shut.

“Very funny coming from you.” Miles said as he grabbed his boyfriend's free hand and walked them over to the kitchen. Immediately Hobie felt as if tension filled the air as three adults stood still to stare at him and Miles.

“Mom, dad, uncle Aaron. This is Hobie, my boyfriend.” Miles said feeling as the other teen let go of his hand to greet his his parents and uncle,

“Nice to meet you Mr. and Mrs. Morales.” Hobie said as he stretched out his hand. Mrs. Morales smiled as she took his hand in both of hers shaking it.

“Oh it's so nice to finally meet you Hobie!” She said, letting go of his hand. Hobie remembered he had the flowers in his hand, so he gently passed them over to her.

“I got these for you Mrs. Morales.” Hobie said, Rio’s smile having never left her face, gently took the flowers from Hobie, quickly thanking him as she walked away to what he assumed was to place them in a vase. Hobie then turned to Mr. Morales. He quickly offered his hand to Mile’s dad.

“Nice to meet you Mr. Morales.” Hobie said, hoping that his nervousness wasn’t seeping out of his body. Jeff looked at the punk teen before he took his hand in his with a firm grasp.

“So you’re Hobie.” Jeff said, Hobie held his breath as he slowly nodded.

“Yes sir.” The teen said. Jeff was still holding his hand in his grasp. Jeff seemed to be examining Hobie. Miles looked nervously between his dad and boyfriend.

“Uh dad you can let go now.” Miles said, Hobie felt relief flow through his body.

“Right.” Jefferson said letting go giving Hobie one final look before he walked over to his wife. Hobie just watched before he turned to look at Miles.

“Ion think I’ve ever been more scared in my entire life.” He whispered

“Hobart Brown admitting fear.” His boyfriend teased.

“Piss off.” Hobie said, making his boyfriend lean onto him laughing. There was that feeling again, the feeling of adoration and nothing but love. Both teens froze when another figure appeared next to them.

“Nice to see you again, Hobie.” Aaron said, both teens looked at him.

“Nice to see you too uh.. mr?” Aaron waved him off before placing his hand on the punk's shoulder.

“Just Aaron kid, no need for formalities.” Hobie nodded, Miles once again watched as Hobie interacted with one of his family members. Aaron walked away after a few seconds of awkward silence. Hobie once again turned to Miles who was just staring at him.

“You know it’s rude to stare sweetheart.” Hobe said Miles rolled his eyes in response as he playfully swatted at Hobie, Hobie was quick to stop him as they both laughed. Miles paused as he looked over to the adults in the kitchen.

“Mami Hobie and I are going to wait in my room.” He said not even waiting for a response before he’d already begun walking to his room, grabbing Hobie’s hand. Hobie couldn’t care enough either for a response.

Miles gently shut the door after he’d walked himself and Hobie into his room. Hobie wasn’t facing Miles but he could still feel the younger teen staring at him.

“I take it you really like the hair darling.” Hobie said as he turned to face Miles, who was just staring at Hobie. Hobie wasn’t one to get flustered, but when it came to Miles, he swore he’d been lit on fire. Miles stayed silent as he moved closer to Hobie holding one of Hobie’s twists in his fingers as if he was examining it. Hobie stood still and just watched.

“Mi-“

“I love it.” Miles finally spoke, letting go of the punk's hair, moving to wrap his arms around Hobie’s neck, moving his hands to run them through the boy’s hair. Hobie could feel his heart begin to race, slowly he moved his hands to place them firmly on Miles’ waist.

“The things you do to me, Miles Morales, should get you arrested.” Hobie said, as he pulled in Miles closer from his waist pressing them closer together.

“Thought you didn’t believe in the police.” Miles said as he moved to pull Hobie into a kiss. Hobie quickly kissed back giving Miles waist a light squeeze.

“Like I said, you do crazy things to me Morales.” Hobie mumbled against his boyfriend’s lips, before kissing him again. Miles hummed into their kiss as he continued to gently run his hands through Hobie’s hair. Hobie moved his thumbs in slow circles on Miles’ waist. A knock at Miles’ door is what separated them.

“Boys dinner is ready, come on.” His mother spoke through the door. Miles frowned at the interruption, Hobie laughed at his boyfriend's reaction, placing a kiss on his cheek before he let him go grabbing his hand as he walked them out. Miles gently tugged at his hand making Hobie pause, looking back at Miles.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Miles asked Hobie smiled, he loved how caring his boyfriend could be. Hobie nodded as a response pulling Miles to hug him.

“I wouldn’t av’ agreed if I didn’t.” Hobie said as he placed a kiss on Miles’ forehead. Miles nodded before he pulled away, grabbing Hobie’s hand and walking them out of his room.

Hobie watched as his boyfriend interacted with his parents and uncle as he helped set up the table. He felt out of place but he’d do anything for Miles. He watched as Miles placed the last plate in front of a seat, looking over at Hobie once he was done, signaling him to come over. Hobie walked over as Miles pulled out a chair next to him, which Hobie gladly took.

“What a gentleman you are.” Hobie said teasing miles. Miles felt his face flush as he rolled his eyes looking away.

“Just shut up and look pretty.”

“Aight, but I’ll do it because I want not because you told me.”

“Shut up.” Miles spat out, Hobie could tell there was no real venom behind his words but he did as he was told. That was shortly lived, because just as quickly as he’d shut up he turned to start a conversation with Miles.

Rio watched as her son and his boyfriend conversed. She smiled as she watched her son laugh at whatever the other teen had said.

“I think he’s a good boy Jeff.” Rio said as she turned to her husband who was watching both teens like a hawk.

“I don’t know Rio.”

“Ay amor por favor, míralos. He seems respectful and it seems like Miles really likes him.” Rio said as she looked back at the teens sitting at the table. Her husband only gave her a grunt as a response. Ríos eyes glanced over at her brother-in-law, who was also watching the two boys.

“He’s a good kid,” Aaron suddenly spoke, making Jeff and Rio look over at him. Jeff gave him a questioning look before Aaron shrugged and gestured over at the two teenagers once more.

“Don’t look at me like that, you know I’m right.”

“I don’t like it when you’re right.”

“When he got here the first thing he did after he was greeted by Miles was greet you two.” Aaron spoke, Jeff listened with a scowl on his face. Rio smiled as her eyes glanced over to the flowers.

“You know he’s right Jeff.” The expression on her husband's face never changed. Jeff sighed admitting defeat, hanging his head low before he looked back and forth between his brother and his wife.

“I hate it when you two team up against me.” Aaron and Rio only laughed as a response.

“Okay we should head over before they question why we’re taking so long.” Rio said as she walked over with the food pot in hand. Jeff and Aaron followed right behind her.

They all sat in silence as they ate. Miles would look over at Hobie occasionally, only to see that he was nervously eating his plate of food. Aaron could see his brother staring at both teens, he swore that if looks could kill, Hobie would be dead times ten. Aaron nudged his brother who looked over at Aaron in return. Jeff seemed to understand, clearing his throat before he spoke, catching everyone’s attention.

“So Hobie right?” Jeff asked, getting a nod in return. Miles nervously watched as his boyfriend and dad started a conversation.

“How did you two meet?”

“We met on the subway. I was on my way to meet my band mates for rehearsal. I saw Miles on the train and I thought he looked cool so I asked for his number.” Hobie said, nervously eyeing Jeff. Jeff nodded

“How old are you, Hobie?”

“I’m seventeen.”

“You here alone?”

“Yeah, I’ve been on my own for a while now.” Hobie continued to say, he felt as Miles took his hand lacing their fingers together.

“On your own?” This time it was Miles’ mom that spoke. Hobie nodded. The room went silent. Hobie felt as Miles squeezed his hand keeping him grounded.

“It was me and my mum for a while, before she got sick and passed, dad died when I was a wee lad. My mum made sure to get me emancipated before she passed so I wasn’t stuck in the system.” Hobie knew he was probably talking too much. He looked over at the three adults across from himself and Miles. Rio looked at him with somber eyes and her hand over her mouth, Jeff and Aaron only stared.

“Sorry.” Hobie said, Rio shook her head

“No Hobie, don’t apologize, it's alright.” Hobie only nodded as a response as he took a bite of his forgotten food. The air felt heavy and awkward.

“What school do you go to?” This time it was Aaron who spoke.

“I do it online since I travel a lot.”

“Anything specific you’re looking into?” Mrs. Morales asked

“Music. I’ve always had a huge thing for music.” Hobie smiled, he felt Miles squeeze his hand once more.

“You’re a nurse right Mrs. Morales?” Hobie asked, Rio nodded in response. Hobie had realized that Miles had remained silent the entire time he’d spoken to his boyfriend's parents. Hobie gently tugged at Miles' hand, making the younger teen turn his attention to him. Miles smiled at Hobie squeezing his hand. The table finished eating their meals in silence.

Miles had walked Hobie and himself to his room after he’d helped clean up the table.

“I think that went well.” Hobie said as he hugged Miles from behind, Miles leaned his head back.

“I think so too. My dad didn’t seem to hate you.” Miles said as he moved his body to press his chest against Hobie’s, draping his arms over his shoulders. His eyes shifted to look at a Hobies hair.gh

“Have I told you I really love your hair?” Miles said, Hobie hid his face at the crook of Miles’ neck to cover up his flushed face.

“I think so.” Hobie said the two stood like that before he’d begun to trail kisses along Miles’ neck up to his lips.

“I missed you.” Hobie spoke between kisses.

“Me too.” Miles admitted. Hobies arms remained wrapped around Miles, moving so he could place his hands on the teen’s waist. Hobie looked Miles in the eyes, admiring the color of his soft brown eyes. Miles was the one who’d closed the gap between them, moving his arms to wrap them around Hobie’s neck. Miles always loved when he and Hobie kissed. It made him feel wanted, and with the way he knew Hobie looked at him he knew he was. Hobie never knew that you could love someone so much until he’d met Miles. Miles was the first person to have proven Miguel’s stupid canon theory wrong. He regretted ever avoiding Miles when he realized he was in love. If he had told him sooner then maybe they would’ve been together for much longer. Hobie used to imagine he’d spend his life alone, he never really gave his love life much thought, but then came Miles. Sweet, loving, beautiful Miles, the punk would rather die than admit he daydreamed of spending his whole life with Miles. He knew that if he did he’d never hear the end of it from Pav. Hobie moved to hold Miles closer, bumping them against the door. Miles panted against Hobie’s lips as he broke their kiss to catch his breath, Hobie doing the same.

“I don’t think you understand the shit you make me feel, Miles.” Hobie said as he moved his hands running them up and down Miles’ sides.

“Show me.” That was all that Miles said before Hobie picked him up and tossed him on the bed. Hobie quickly pressed his lips on his boyfriends. Miles’ lips parted, making Hobie slip his tongue in, deepening their kiss. Hobie slotted himself between Miles’ thighs, gripping his hips straddling them against himself.

“You asked for it Morales.” Hobie said as he reached over his freakishly long arms to lock the bedroom door, quickly turning back to Miles and going straight for his neck peppering a trail of kisses along it and trailing them along his jawline.

“You make me crazy for you.” Hobie said as he moved to Miles’ adam’s apple gently grazing  it with his teeth, making the teen under him shudder.

“You don’t make me sane yourself.” Miles said, Hobie then once again moved to kiss Miles. Hobie parted his lips and he felt as Miles slipped his tongue into his mouth. They only hoped that none of the adults outside would hear them.
