Having a boyfriend without a face takes a little getting used to.

Not in a bad way!

It’s just, like, a little terrifying to wake up staring into a black void those first few mornings. But you got used to it fast, of course. You loved him and his definitive lack of a lot of human features. It just made him more unique, honestly.

He didn’t really feel the same, you knew. Obviously losing something like your face would be a gigantic blow to your self esteem. You couldn’t even imagine how that felt.

Unrelated, but your first anniversary was tomorrow! Your dearly beloved had already retired to bed about half an hour ago, and you were pretty confident that he wouldn’t be up again anytime soon.

Time to execute the plan.

Project ‘make-John-a-new-face’ is on.

You spend probably too much time trying to find a face you like. You also waste a LOT of plates. Oops.

Finally, you settle on something. A simple smiley face with a couple of moles. You’d seen a couple of pictures of him before.. you know, the incident, so you were familiar with what his face once looked like.

It wasn’t anything gorgeous, you were far from an artist.

Just a dork trying something new to cheer up their boyfriend.

You quickly wrap up your little gift and settle it  on the kitchen counter, next to a vase with some roses in it and a heart shaped box of chocolates.

You know, nothing too cheesy.

The next morning you’re practically vibrating with nerves (and excitement, but mostly nerves). He doesn’t have anything for you, since, you know, no job and all.

It’s okay. You’re more than happy to treat him to a special day. He deserves that much.

”Sooo, what’s in the.. suspiciously flat wrapping paper?”

You laugh, picking it up. You hand it to him. “It’s, well- so, it’s not the actual gift I have for you, but I wanted to see you smile. Literally,” you snort.

He tilts his head, gently undoing the wrapping paper. Gentle giant that he is, he spends an ungodly amount of time just pulling the paper off.

”It’s.. a plate?”

”Turn it around.”

Oh.

You both break out into raucous laughter, him nearly doubling over the counter in a fit of giggles.

”I- I like that,” he wheezes, barely holding it together.

Good.

Mission success.

Of course, you insist on a photo shoot (which you’re totally gonna have printed and framed, because why would you lose that to time?).

Your real gift is a reservation to a fancy dinner spot, of course, but you can talk about that later.

For now, the day is young, and deservedly, full of smiles and laughter.

…Even if some are drawn on!
