Beneath The Summer Sun
Chuuya rolled in bed, blinking at the sunlight streaming through the window. Today was the first official day of summer break, and the house was unusually quiet. He could hear the faint chirping of birds outside and the soft rustling of leaves in the morning breeze. Sitting up, he stretched his arms and yawned, glancing at the clock. It was already past nine. He needed to get up.
Slipping out of bed, Chuuya padded down the hallway and paused outside Dazai's room. The door was slightly ajar, and he could see his stepbrother sprawled out on the bed, still asleep. A small smile tugged at Chuuya's lips. Dazai looked so peaceful when he was asleep, a stark contrast to his usual mischievous and energetic self.
"Hey, lazybones," Chuuya called softly, pushing the door open a bit more. "It's morning. Get up already."
Dazai groaned, burying his face deeper into the pillow. "Five more minutes," he mumbled, his voice muffled.
Chuuya shook his head with a chuckle. "Come on, it's summer break. We should be out enjoying the day, not wasting it in bed."
With a dramatic sigh, Dazai finally lifted his head, his hair a tousled mess. "Fine, fine. I'm up." He sat up slowly, stretching and rubbing his eyes. "What is the plan for today, then?"
Chuuya shrugged, leaning against the doorframe. "I don't know. I thought we could just hang out, maybe go to the park or something."
Dazai's eyes lit up at that. "The park sounds good. Let's have a picnic!"
Half an hour later, they were in the kitchen, putting together sandwiches and packing snacks into a basket. Chuuya found a checkered blanket in the closet, and Dazai grabbed a couple of cold drinks from the fridge. They chatted casually as they worked, discussing everything and nothing.
"Did you talk to Atsushi last night?" Chuuya asked, glancing at Dazai as he packed the last of the sandwiches.
Dazai's expression softened at the mention of his boyfriend. "Yeah, we talked for a bit. He is excited for his trip with his family." He paused, then added. "What about you? Did you call Akutagawa?"
Chuuya nodded, a fond smile playing on his lips. "Yes, he is busy with his internship but said he misses me already."
A brief silence fell between them, each lost in thoughts of their respective partners. Chuuya couldn't help but feel a slight twinge of jealousy. He shook his head, pushing the feeling away. This was not the time for that.
"Ready to go?" Dazai's voice broke through his thoughts.
"Yeah, let's head out," Chuuya replied, grabbing the picnic basket.
The park was a short walk from their house, and the day was perfect for an outing. The sky was a clear blue, and a gentle breeze kept the heat at bay. They found a shady spot under a large oak tree and spread out the blanket, setting down with their food.
For a while, they ate in comfortable silence, enjoying the pleasant weather and the simple pleasure of each other's company. But eventually, the conversation turned back to their boyfriends.
"Atsushi sent me the cutest picture yesterday," Dazai said, pulling out his phone and showing Chuuya the photo. It was a candid shot of Atsushi laughing, his eyes sparkling with joy.
Chuuya couldn't help but smile at the picture, though the jealousy from earlier crept back. "He looks really happy," he commented. "Akutagawa doesn't smile like that often, but when he does, it's like he lights up the room."
Dazai glanced at Chuuya, noting the wistful tone in his voice. "You really love him, don't you?"
Chuuya nodded, fiddling with a blade of grass. "Yeah, I do. It's just... Sometimes I wish we could spend more time together. His internship keeps him so busy."
Dazai sighed, lying back on the blanket and staring up at the leaves rustling above. "I know what you mean. Atsushi is always so busy with school and family stuff. It's hard not to feel a bit neglected sometimes."
Chuuya lay down beside him, their shoulders barely touching. "I guess that's just part of being in a relationship, huh?"
"Yeah," Dazai agreed softly. "But it doesn't make it any easier."
They fell silent again, each lost in their own thoughts. The park around them was filled with the sounds of the laughter and the distant hum of traffic, but in their little corner, it felt like they were the only two people in the world.
After a while, Chuuya turned his head to look at Dazai. "Do you ever feel like... Maybe we are missing out on something?"
Dazai met his gaze, his brown eyes thoughtful. "What do you mean?"
Chuuya hesitated, struggling to put his feelings into words. "I don't know. I just... Sometimes it feels like there is this... Connection between us that's different from what I have with Akutagawa. Does that make any sense?"
Dazai's expression softened, and he reached out to gently brush a strand of hair away from Chuuya's face. "Yeah, it makes sense. I feel it too. But that doesn't mean what we have with them is any less real."
Chuuya nodded, feeling a strange mix of relief and confusion. "You are right. I guess it's just hard to sort through all these feelings sometimes."
Dazai chuckled, his hand lingering near Chuuya's face for a moment before he pulled it back. "Welcome to being human, Chuuya. Feelings are messy and complicated, but that's what makes life interesting."
Back at the house, they settled in the living room, feeling pleasantly tired from the day's activities. Chuuya stretched out on the couch while Dazai flipped through the channels of the TV, looking for something to watch.
"You know," Chuuya said after a while. "I'm glad we did this today. It was nice to just hang out and talk."
Dazai smiled, glancing over at him. "Yeah, it was. We should do it more often."
Chuuya nodded in agreement, feeling a warmth in his chest that had nothing to do with the summer heat. "Definitely."
As they watched TV, Chuuya found himself sneaking at glances at Dazai, admiring the way the light from the screen played across his features. He knew he shouldn't feel this way, but he couldn't help it. There was something about Dazai that drew him in, made him feel things he didn't quite understand.
Dazai must have felt his gaze because he turned to look at Chuuya, a soft smile playing on his lips. "What are you thinking about?"
Chuuya hesitated for a moment before answering. "Just... How lucky I am to have you as my stepbrother."
Dazai's smile widened, and he reached out to ruffle Chuuya's hair. "Right back at you, Chuuya."
