Prologue; Flying

“Miles morales,”

“Never heard of him,” Hobie immediately went to switch on his phone and search for this person that he was supposedly meant to dance with.

Miguel just hummed, taking a sip of his coffee before they went past the red light they had been standing at. “We might be a bit early so you can talk to him then,”

“We’re always early,” Hobie muttered, but Miguel’s super sonic hearing abilities meant that he picked up every word that he said

“That makes me a good manager,” Miguel glared at Hobie through the glass of the rear view mirror, And Hobie pretended not to be intimidated.

“Or just a perfectionist,” Hobie knew that if it wasn’t for Miguel he’d probably be fired by now, becuase Miguel had to pull his arse out of bed each morning. But deep deep deep deep deep down he knew that Miguel had a soft spot for him, and he was the best manager he’s had.

Miguel graciously ignored Hobie and continued driving while his muscles flexed, Hobie wondered for a moment how Miguel was so buff, when did he have time to work out when he had to tend to him all day, maybe he didn’t sleep. That’s probably why he was so grumpy all the time.

He looked down at his phone once again from the abandoned google search of Miles Morales, he clicked on the channel he had on YouTube, it had around 8k subscribers. Quite  a small dancer then. He must have been really good to be scouted for a music video like this.

Hobie was growing more anticipated in the thought of Miles, he clicked on the first video that came up.

Flying by Cody Fry (Dance Cover)

A steady piano filled his ears steady as Miles began to move his move solemn like the lyrics as it started to unfold. He was wearing grey, which was a good choice against the airy studio floor, giving the connotations of neutrality. They were lose on his frame making his movements seem more fluid as he moved his arms.

There was something heartbreaking about the way Miles was moving, like he doubting himself. He melded into the song perfectly, his movements were strong and his facial expressions were passionate. He seemed average height but videos we’re decieveing. But one thing he was sure of was that Miles was a beautiful dancer. He seemed to understand exactly how to connect to an audience using his body.

Maybe it was because he was a dancer that he could appreciate the difficultly and the effectiveness of the dance as well as the emotion that’s was being conveyed. His leaps landed softly and his turns stopped perfectly square, his isolations were perfect, and as the song reached its final crescendo, Hobie could feel his eyes prickling, the message of the song didn’t help that fact entirely but he felt as though he had watched a movie with a devastating ending. But you couldn’t be mad at it because it was also one of the most beautiful movies you’ve ever seen

“You alright back there,?” Hobie looked up to make eye contact with Miguel who he had just realised stopped driving

“We’re here?” Hobie said rubbing his eyes embarrassed, the screen was blank and he’d been staring at it as though he would reappear on screen.

“We’ve been here for ages,” Miguel rolled his eyes before opening his car door. Hobie waited for him to walk round and open his. His security guard was already there waiting for him.

“What took you guys so long,” Jay, his security guard, asked as he took his square position just behind Hobie.

“Migs didn’t tell me we stopped,”

“Probably because you were crying watching motivational speeches,” Miguel deadpanned before Hobie could answer, taking Hobie’s AirPod maxes from him to put away.

“Why are you hating man,” Hobie sulked and Miguel just smirked and started walking.

“Easy on the kid,” Jay chuckled as they walked into the venue, there were a couple of paparazzi cameras there and there but the walk was too short for anything substantial and most people weren’t aware of this shoot yet.

He waited for Miguel to sign them in before they headed to the briefing room. It was a beautiful office, as to be expected from an artist headquarters, there were big singers and actors under this company. No dancers though, hence the reason why he was here.

Since blowing up, Hobie had done many commissions, from big artists' music videos or stages  to even a movie, so his fame was starting to rise, as well as the hectic mess of his schedule. However this was a more stable job for the next month. He’d had it in his calendar for a while.

“Hobie Brown, the big shot,” a man that couldn’t be less than 40 cheered as he walked in behind Miguel, he saw his lawyer already sitting down.

“Mr J Lewis,” Miguel greeted as he guided Hobie to his seat.

“You can call me JL,” He beamed with a small hearty chuckle, Hobie liked his vibe but by the small glint in his eyes he looked like he was going to lay it on thick.

“Joy couldn’t be here today for a final recording with , but we can still get underway when Miles arrives,”

Just as the last sentence rolled off his tongue the door at the end of the meeting room hurled open. A man in his thirties and Miles walked through the door.

Miles walked quite tall, his posture was pretty good and his steps were even and rhythmic, as a dancer would. He was quite tall but he was not as tall as Hobie. However the same could not be said for his manager

“I told you we wouldn’t be late,”  Miles just nodded wordlessly giving what Hobie presumed to be his manager a nudge to move forward and stop embarrassing him.

“Peter, glad you could make it take a seat, glad to have you too Miles,”

He took a seat opposite Hobie and smiled softly at him, Hobie quickly

Smiled back and tried to ignore Miguel’s judgy gaze on the manager that had just walked in. It was clear that they were both new to the game but they didn’t look too out of place. But the manager didn’t look half as put together as Miguel did.

“Right so, we’ve been through most of the legal stuff with you guys separately and now we want to get that concluding brief before we go full into production,” He picked up some paper and distributed it to everyone. “This is the final contract, we have one more thing to discuss which is what we want you guys to do, Joy us expressed that she’d rather that you two not just dance but also act as well, there’s no dialogue, all visual but, we think it would be in a better interest to use people constantly to build more of a connection with the viewers. Hence why we we want you guys to cover the full video,”

Hobie looked beside him to Miguel who was already in soft discussion with his lawyer as they flicked through the context and dissected the section they haggled to be corrected.

“What’s the genre of the song,” Miles' manager asked as he flipped through the contract. Hobie was surprised the question hasn’t crossed his mind until then, what if he had to act out as a murderer or something.

“It’s a love song,”

Definitely not a murderer.

“Which leads on to my next point, this will then mean dance chemistry workshops as well as visual chemistry workshops, will be in place if you are to finalise,” Miguel nodded and nudged Hobie giving him a nod to which Hobie nodded back without a second thought.

Hobie spared a quick glance at Miles who seemed thoroughly shocked, which Hobie guessed was fair seeing as he was a dancer being asked to act. He had done some acting before so it wasn’t too much of a big deal for him.

“We are aware of Hobie’s past experience, so it’s really down to Miles’ party, of course this would mean some more money to cover the cost have having you for more time seeing as you’ll be doing workshops as well as choreo” Peter turned to their own lawyer now liking through the terms.

“Miles?” JL looked at Miles expecting a response, Miles just looked feebly at Peter, and by the look on Peter's face it was obvious that this was a deal he couldn’t pass up. This would provide a massive jump start to his career and end the cycle of small jobs as well as give him a lot of money.

“Yeah, sounds good,” it didn’t seem like JL was going to linger on the unsureness in Miles' voice as he swiftly moved on to pushing for the final contracts to be signed.

“Perfect you start on Monday,”  That was a day from now. “Let’s get these signed once and for all,”

And just like that Hobie was going to see Miles everyday for the next 2 months.
