confession

You let out a big sigh as you shuffle piles of reports and files around your workspace.

Miguel’s curt words still ring in your ear. Get to work, he says. Hmpf.

You knew you were acting somewhat childish, but you couldn’t help yourself. It was annoying to be bossed around by a man who continuously judges you. It was as if he was underestimating you, or worse, found your presence to be revolting. The reasons for his hostility remained unknown to you, but one thing was certain: you abhorred it. Pushing back the strong emotions, you found yourself some reports that had to be filed and reviewed. Heaving the haul into your arms, you glide across the room and far away from Miguel.

Seconds turned to minutes and minutes stretched to hours. Eventually, you slide of the chair and stretched. Your back cracks loudly, it sounds all throughout the enclosure. It was tedious work, but you persevered and survived. With a sense of accomplishment, you tidy up your workspace and organise all the folders containing the reports.

Glancing at the clock, you notice that the night was slowly setting in. Your eyes gloss over to Miguel, he was still engrossed in his work. Is he some kind of machine? How on earth is he still able to concentrate?

The tension between the two seemed to have subsided, but you couldn’t help but replaying the events in your head. Inhaling the cool air, you stride over to where Miguel was. His hand was propping his head up, while the other was fidgeting with a pen. You notice his eyes scanning the paper before him, before turning to face you.

“I’ve finished reviewing and completing the reports,” you said, your voice steady. “I’ll be needing your final approval on it.” In doing so, you were ready to leave the lab to take a break when suddenly he mumbles under his breath.

“Great, just what I needed. More half-assed work.”

This was your final straw, you were ready to snap, break, name it as you will. You were done with this man and his cheap antics to get under your skin. You stop in your tracks, pivoting yourself around and take a step closer to his large frame.

“I’m sorry, is there something that I have done to offend you?” your eyebrows knit together. You couldn’t believe the nerve of this man, what did you do to offend him so?

“You really don’t know?” he asks inquisitively whilst his brows perk up rather quickly. You note the rumbling feeling of his voice within your body. My goodness.

“What? Am I supposed to?” you stare up at him dumbfoundedly. “I can’t read min-…w-what are you doing?” you don’t finish your sentence.

Instead, you were overwhelmed by his body that was now just inches apart from yours. The warmth of his body radiates dances along your skin, the hair on your body stands on edge like soldiers ready for battle. The tips of his fingers grip onto the desk behind you, he leans into his grip, shifting his weight onto his arm. You were trapped. Between the desk and his imposing stature.

“W-what?” you put your head down, unable to look into his domineering eyes. Your fingers fidget with the hem of your shirt.

“Fine, I’ll tell you then,” he snarls, his words dripping with venom, as if each syllable is a calculated strike. His voice is low sending a shiver down my spine. “I know you only got this position because of your father; you probably didn’t have to fight nor work your way up to this position you have now. You will never understand the proper struggles to get a spot in Alchemax because you have daddy right beside your side,” he scowls.

His knuckles become white from gripping at the edge of the table. Miguel presses the side of his forehead against mine, his hot breath tingles at my ears. At times, you feel his chest graze against your breasts. The smell of his faint cologne and hints of his shampoo hits your nostrils. All senses of yours are now heightened, the proximity of his body was enough for you to focus on all your surroundings and on Miguel. The sound of his heavy breathing is all you could hear now; it acted as a constant reminder of his closeness. You could barely concentrate on the words that rolled of his tongue, but you were able to get the gist of it. The resentment that he harboured towards you, especially from something you had no control over. Bringing a hand to Miguel’s broad chest, you forcefully push him off. In doing so, Miguel grunts and staggers back.

“Asshole,” you glare at him. You run a hand through your hair, taking in shallow breaths that seemed to never satiate your yearning for more air. Miguel runs his tongue along his teeth, his eyebrows still furrowed as always. I can’t convince him to stay. He hates me! Your mind runs through each future scenarios all resulting in Miguel leaving and your father’s disappointment. Shit.

Miguel, in a few swift strides, exits through the door; leaving me by my lonesome self. You couldn’t shake that incident, you could still feel his lingering warmth that electrified your body. His hot breath that tickled ever so gracefully on your ear. His words that effortlessly flowed from his mouth, the movement of his soft plump lips remained ingrained in your memory. You cover your face in your palms. What am I doing? He was attractive, but I hate him, and he hates me. He said so himself. Pushing back the torrent of emotions; you knew it wouldn’t last. It was just a fleeting feeling. Gathering yourself up, you leave the lab and all the feelings behind.

Moving to the different levels, you take refuge in the break room, your usual sanctuary. You have a home, but you found it convenient to ‘live’ in the Alchemax building that way you didn’t have to travel too much. You did, at times, go back home when needed or when you felt like it. Shutting your eyes, you bask in the silence. You were determined to assist your father and fulfill his wishes, no matter what. Reassuring yourself that the future will be different, and that Miguel will be on board, thanks to you.
