the confession

One Friday evening, Peter sat perched in his favorite spot atop the compound roof, watching the sunset color the sky brilliant hues of orange and pink.

Peter was so lost in thought as he watched the sunset that he didn't hear the roof access door open behind him.

"I thought I might find you up here."

He whirled around in surprise to see Shuri walking towards him, an impish smile on her face.

"Shuri!" Peter scrambled to his feet, pulse quickening. "What - how are you here?"

"Surprise visit." She spread her arms with a grin. "Couldn't miss seeing my best friend while I'm in New York."

Peter's face split into a matching grin as he swept her up into an enthusiastic hug. "This is awesome! I've missed you so much."

Shuri laughed, returning his embrace just as fiercely. "And I you." They held on for a long moment before stepping back, both slightly giddy.

Peter couldn't stop smiling. "When did you get here? Does my dad know you're visiting?"

"Just arrived this evening with my brother. He's meeting with the other Avengers, while I convinced him to let me come find you first." Shuri's eyes sparkled. "I may have snuck away while he was distracted. But I'm sure you will help keep me out of trouble, yes?"

Peter chuckled. "I'll do my best. But where did you even know to find me up here?"

"Your lovely mother was quite helpful." Shuri winked. "She sends her regards and says not to stay up here too late."

Peter made a mental note to thank Natasha later for conspiring with Shuri. He plopped back down, patting the space beside him. "Here, you gotta watch this sunset. It's epic from up high."

Shuri settled comfortably next to him, shoulders brushing. "Wow. The views here are magnificent."

They sat in contented silence for awhile, simply enjoying being together again. As the sun slipped below the horizon, Peter glanced over to find Shuri watching him with an unreadable expression. His mouth went dry, heart suddenly pounding.

"Hey, so uh, can we talk? There's something I wanted to tell you," he began nervously.

But Shuri pressed a finger gently to his lips, eyes glinting playfully. "In a moment. First, I want to give you a proper greeting to you."

Before Peter could react, she leaned in and pressed her lips softly but purposefully against his in a sweet, lingering kiss.

Peter's brain short-circuited. Shuri was kissing him. Shuri was kissing him! His eyes drifted shut as he savored the tender contact, shyly kissing back.

After a perfect eternity, Shuri drew back, eyes shining. "There. Much better hello."

Peter could only stare at her, stunned speechless. Shuri's expression shifted to concern at his lack of response.

"I'm so sorry, was that too forward? I thought you wanted..." She bit her lip anxiously.

"No no, that was perfect!" Peter hastened to assure her. "I just can't believe you feel the same way. That's actually what I wanted to talk to you about." He rubbed his neck sheepishly.

Shuri's relief was palpable. "Oh thank Bast! I was worried I'd misread things." Her gaze softened fondly. "I must admit, it took me quite by surprise realizing my feelings for you were deeper than friendship. But now, it feels so..."

"Right," Peter finished quietly. He reached out to slip his hand in hers. "I was scared to say anything cuz I didn't want to mess up our friendship. But uh, I really care about you as more than a friend, Shuri. A lot more."

"As do I, Peter." Shuri gave his hand a gentle squeeze. "You are very special to me. I knew from our first day together." She smiled, a pretty blush coloring her cheeks. "Never have I bonded so quickly with someone. Your heart called out to mine."

Peter ducked his head, feeling his own cheeks heat. "Wow, yeah. Same for me honestly." He met her soft gaze. "So where do we go from here? If you wanna just stay friends, I totally understand..."

Shuri pressed a finger to his lips again, eyes dancing merrily. "I believe your customs dictate we date next? To explore these romantic feelings?" At Peter's startled nod, she grinned. "Then that is what we shall do."

"R-really?" Peter stammered. When Shuri nodded, he broke into an excited smile. "That's awesome! I've, uh, never actually dated anyone before. But I wanna try this with you."

Shuri bit her lip shyly. "I as well. We shall figure it out together." She traced her fingers over the communication beads on his wrist. "No matter the distance."

Peter turned his hand to link their fingers, heart swelling. "Yeah. Together." It was both a promise and a prayer.

Shuri tilted her forehead against his, just breathing each other in for a moment. Everything felt heightened and fragile somehow, balanced on the cusp of change. But Peter trusted it was the start of something amazing.

Reluctantly he drew back, knowing they should head inside before it got too late. But he couldn't resist brushing his thumb tenderly over Shuri's cheek first.

"I'm really glad you're here." The simple words conveyed everything he was feeling. Judging by her smile, Shuri understood.

"As am I, my heart." She pressed a feather-light kiss to his palm before standing, pulling Peter up with her. They descended the roof access stairs hand in hand, ready to face whatever came next together.

Peter was reluctant to part from Shuri, even just for the night. But she assured him they would spend more time together tomorrow. After saying a lingering goodnight at her guest suite, Peter wandered dreamily back to the apartment wing he shared with his parents.

Natasha took one look at him and correctly interpreted his dazed expression and reddened cheeks. She wordlessly pulled him into her arms.

"Oh, my little spider," she murmured fondly, carding a hand through his curls. "Look at you."

Peter mumbled incoherently into her shoulder, overwhelmed by the day's events. Natasha just held him for a long moment, exuding soothing calm.

Finally Peter drew back, scrubbing a hand across his face. "How do you always know exactly what's going on with me?" he asked wryly.

Natasha laughed. "Spy secret. Comes in handy with teenage boys." She studied him knowingly. "I'm guessing things went well with our princess?"

Peter blew out a shaky breath, feeling his goofy grin return. "Really well. We're gonna try, you know. Dating." Saying it out loud somehow made it more real.

Natasha's expression softened. "That's wonderful. I can tell how happy you are." She nudged him towards the living area. "Come sit. We should talk."

Peter let her tug him down beside her on the couch, leaning his head on her shoulder comfortably. Her familiar floral scent never failed to soothe him.

"What's on your mind, little spider?" Natasha prodded gently when he didn't speak right away.

Peter bit his lip, trying to collect his jumbled thoughts. "I guess...I'm worried I won't be good at this whole relationship thing. I've never even kissed a girl before tonight!" He groaned, dropping his head into his hands.

Natasha rubbed his back reassuringly. "Peter, look at me." When he reluctantly met her earnest gaze, she continued gently. "You have the biggest heart of anyone I know. That's the most important thing. The rest you'll figure out together."

Peter managed a small smile. "Yeah. You're right."

"Just go slow and communicate how you're feeling," Nat advised. "Shuri cares about you deeply, that much is clear. So trust that foundation."

Peter nodded, resolve strengthening. "We do have a great friendship. And we both want this to work." He bumped her shoulder lightly. "Thanks, Mom. Really."

She kissed his temple fondly. "Of course, baby spider." Her eyes sparkled impishly. "So, tell me everything. Was it a nice first kiss?"

"Mom!" Peter complained, flushing. But he was laughing, the anxiety ebbing away.

Natasha just tickled his side playfully. "What? I live vicariously through you now." Her expression grew thoughtful. "We should probably have your father give you some old fashioned dating advice..."

Peter's eyes widened in horror. "Oh god, please no. We are not telling Dad about this yet." At her raised eyebrow he pleaded, "Come on, please? Let me figure things out a little first before subjecting myself to that talk."

Natasha laughed. "Alright, your secret is safe with me. For now." She gave him a stern look. "But you know we have to tell him eventually, yes?"

"Fine, soon," Peter conceded with a dramatic sigh. A sudden huge yawn caught him off guard.

Natasha's expression softened fondly. "Get some rest, little spider. Big day tomorrow." She kissed his forehead and nudged him towards bed.

Peter feel asleep almost instantly, Shuri's radiant smile dancing behind his eyelids.

The next day Peter was up bright and early, too excited about seeing Shuri again to sleep in. He gulped down a quick breakfast while trying not to seem overly eager.

Finally it was an acceptable morning hour to go find her. Peter bounced on his toes impatiently as he rode the elevator up to the residential floor Shuri and T'Challa were staying on.

When she opened the door at his knock, Peter's jaw dropped. Shuri looked stunning in a sleek green dress that complemented her warm brown skin perfectly. Her locs were swept atop her head in an elegant updo.

Shuri bit her lip, suddenly looking shy. "Hi. I wanted to look nice for our first official date."

"You look amazing," Peter said sincerely once he found his voice again. He glanced down at his jeans and science pun t-shirt self-consciously. "I, uh, feel kinda under-dressed now."

But Shuri shook her head quickly, taking his hands. "You look perfect just as you are." Her eyes shone happily. "Come, let us explore the city together."

Peter gladly let her tug him out the door. As they made their way through the busy compound hallways, he blurted out, "Wait, does your brother know we're...you know?" He gestured awkwardly between them.

Shuri smirked. "Not yet. But don't worry, he will not object once he knows my heart is set." She leaned up and pecked Peter's cheek. "Now relax and have fun, Spider-Boy."

Easier said than done, but Peter resolved to follow her advice. This was all thrillingly new, but he was ready to embrace it with Shuri by his side.

Happy was waiting out front to chauffeur them into the city. Peter was grateful for the privacy screen as he and Shuri held hands and talked excitedly about the day ahead. She had a full sightseeing itinerary planned that perfectly combined his nerdy interests with trendy spots she wanted to experience.

Peter insisted on opening Shuri's door to help her out of the car like a gentleman when they arrived. She smiled in delight at the gesture. Hand in hand, they set off to explore the bustling streets.

Their first stop was the Museum of Modern Art. Peter was enchanted by how animated Shuri got discussing the different exhibits, analyzing artistic techniques and debating symbolism. He mostly just enjoyed watching her passion light up her whole face.

Afterwards they grabbed crepes from a street vendor and window shopped their way through upscale stores with fancy displays. Shuri convinced him to try on some truly outrageous designer hats and glasses, making him do model poses that had them both cracking up.

As the afternoon slid towards evening, they caught an early dinner at a cozy pizzeria before heading to their final stop - the planetarium show at the Museum of Natural History. They got comfy reclining seats in the back where the darkness provided privacy for shy hand-holding, neither quite ready yet for overt public displays of affection.

Peter found it hard to focus on the show with Shuri nestled so close beside him, her thumb idly stroking his knuckles. The contact sent tingles up his arm even as it soothed him. He was hyper aware of her every breath and tiny movement, drawn like a magnet to her warmth.

When the lights came up, Shuri turned her head to find Peter already gazing at her softly. "Hi," he whispered.

"Hi," Shuri whispered back, eyes dancing.

Peter swallowed, mouth dry. "I had the best time with you today."

Shuri's smile was bright enough to put the cosmos to shame. "As did I." She leaned in, nose brushing his. "A perfect beginning to this new adventure."

Heart pounding, Peter closed the fraction of space between them. The kiss was sweet and unhurried, conveying all the tenderness he felt for this amazing girl.

Shuri eventually pulled back just enough to rest her forehead against his. "Thank you for today, Peter," she murmured. "You make me feel...I cannot describe it. Like I am exactly where I should be."

Peter had to blink back tears, overwhelmed with just how deeply he felt the same. "Yeah. Same for me, Shuri." He tilted her chin up, meeting her soft gaze. "I'm so lucky I met you."

Her answering smile lit up her whole face. Peter wanted to capture this moment in his memory and live inside it forever.

But reality couldn't be put on pause indefinitely. After one more lingering kiss, they exited the planetarium hand in hand to rejoin the outside world.

The perfect day had come to an end. But they had so many more just like it still ahead. Peter knew without a doubt that he wanted to spend them all by Shuri's side.

The drive back to the compound was quieter, both still basking in the glow of their magical first date. When Happy pulled up to the residential building, Peter walked Shuri to her door like a proper gentleman.

He hesitated, fidgeting shyly. "I had an amazing time today."

Shuri beamed. "As did I. It was perfect." She clasped both his hands, expression soft and warm. "I cannot wait to do it all again."

Heart soaring, Peter impulsively brought her hands to his lips, kissing them tenderly. "Me too." He smiled into her palms. "Sweet dreams, Shuri."

"Goodnight, my heart." With one last caress of his cheek, Shuri slipped inside her suite. Peter made his way back to the family wing on cloud nine.

He was surprised to find Natasha still awake reading when he came in. She instantly read the joy on his face.

"There he is." She patted the couch and Peter plopped down beside her eagerly. "So? Tell me all about this date."

Peter launched into an enthusiastic recap, unable to keep the huge smile off his face the whole time. Nat listened attentively, eyes crinkling with quiet happiness for him.

When he finally wound down, she pulled him into a hug. "Sounds like you two had an amazing day. I'm so happy for you, little spider."

Peter hugged her back tightly. "It was perfect. Shuri's just...she's so awesome, Mom. I really like her a lot."

"I know, baby." Natasha kissed his hair fondly, swaying them gently. "And it's clear she feels the same about you."

They stayed curled up together just breathing contently for several minutes. Peter was starting to doze off when Natasha spoke up again softly.

"You should get some rest. Assuming you want to see Shuri again tomorrow?"

Peter huffed a sleepy laugh. "Every day if I could." He sat up reluctantly, stifling a yawn.

Natasha trailed her fingers through his hair tenderly. "Just remember, you have time. No need to rush into anything serious. You're both still so young." Her gaze was soft but serious. "Promise me you'll be patient and let this unfold naturally?"

"I promise," Peter assured her earnestly. He knew she just wanted to protect him from getting hurt.

Natasha studied his face a moment before nodding, satisfied. She kissed his forehead gently. "Good. Now get some sleep, little spider. More adventures to come."

Peter fell into his bed still fully dressed, too tired to change. His dreams were filled with visions of kind eyes and musical laughter as he and Shuri soared high above the clouds without a care in the world.

On Shuri's last night before returning to Wakanda, Peter took her out for a moonlit picnic by the lake on the property. They spread a blanket on the grass and dug into the feast he'd packed, talking softly as they watched the star reflections dancing across the water.

Peter eventually worked up the nerve to put his arm around Shuri, thrilled when she immediately tucked herself against his side. Her warmth seeped into him, more comforting than any blanket.

After the food was gone, they lay back gazing up at the infinity of stars overhead. Peter pointed out constellations, telling the mythical stories behind each one that Natasha had taught him over the years. Shuri listened enraptured, playing idly with his free hand resting atop her stomach.

When Peter finally ran out of star stories, a contented silence fell. He glanced down to find Shuri already gazing back at him tenderly. His breath caught at the open affection in her eyes.

"What're you thinking about?" he asked softly, tracing his thumb over her knuckles.

Shuri's smile faded, and Peter's followed suite.

"I was thinking how I don't want this night to end," Shuri admitted softly. "How I wish I did not have to leave you."

Peter's heart clenched. "Me too," he murmured. "But hey, you'll visit again soon, right? And I'll make it out to Wakanda as much as I can." He touched her cheek gently. "We'll make it work."

Shuri nodded, leaning into his palm. "Of course we will. It is only...difficult being apart after having you close again." She sighed, looking up at the stars once more. "We knew this would be complicated. But you are worth any challenge, Peter Romanoff."

"Right back at you, Shuri Udaku." Peter clasped her hand over his heart. "You're pretty incredible, you know that?"

Shuri bit her lip, failing to hide her pleased smile. "Well, I cannot argue with that." Her expression turned playful. "And you are quite extraordinary yourself, Spider-Boy."

Peter huffed a laugh. "Yeah, nothing extraordinary about me. Just your average science nerd."

Shuri propped herself up on an elbow, eyes serious now. "I mean it. You have a truly unique and beautiful spirit. Never doubt that." She leaned down and kissed him tenderly.

Peter melted into it, the rest of the world falling away. No matter how far apart duty might take them, they would always have this - two hearts beating as one.

When Shuri eventually pulled back, her gaze danced happily. "Come see the sunrise with me before we part?"

Peter allowed her to tug him eagerly to his feet. They folded up the blanket and stowed the picnic supplies, then set off hand in hand back towards the compound.

Instead of going inside though, Shuri led them up a wooded hill that overlooked the glass-walled residential building. Nestled beneath a towering oak, they had a breathtaking vantage point to watch the approaching dawn.

They cuddled close against the pre-dawn chill. Peter pointed out the windows of his family's living quarters, and the rooftop perch he'd shown Shuri that first magical night.

As the horizon began lightening, he pressed a kiss to her hair. "I'm really gonna miss you," he whispered, aching with it already.

Shuri simply threaded their fingers together. "I will see you soon, my heart." She kept her voice steady through sheer force of will.

Then the first rays of golden sunlight crested the compound walls, washing everything in a breathtaking glow. Peter and Shuri sat in silence bearing witness to nature's majesty unfolding before them.

When the sun finally rose fully above the horizon line, Shuri turned to Peter with glistening eyes and gave him one last lingering kiss. Hand in hand, they walked back down the hill to face the start of another goodbye neither was ready for.

After a subdued breakfast during which Peter and Shuri kept finding excuses to touch - a hand on his knee, her fingers combing through his hair - it was time for the Wakandan royals to depart.

Peter hung back watching everyone else exchange farewells with T'Challa and Shuri. He wasn't ready yet to say goodbye.

But then Shuri was suddenly in front of him, hands coming up to cradle his face tenderly. "This is not forever, just a temporary parting," she reminded him gently.

Peter nodded, throat too tight to respond. He pulled her into a fierce embrace, burying his face against her neck and just breathing her in. Shuri clung to him just as tightly.

Finally Peter managed to choke out, "I'm gonna see you really soon, okay? So this isn't sad, it's just...see you later."

He felt Shuri's lips curve against his hair. "Yes, exactly. See you very soon." She pulled back enough to meet his earnest gaze. "Thank you for everything, Peter Romanoff. For your friendship...and your heart."

Peter's own heart clenched almost painfully. "Always," he whispered thickly. Because a world without Shuri in his life was one he didn't ever want to know.

One last soft kiss, and then she was stepping back. Their joined hands lingered together a moment before slowly drifting apart.

Peter watched until the jet disappeared from view, carrying his heart along with it.

Over the next couple weeks Peter tried his best not to mope too noticeably, but his mood remained subdued. He went through the motions of school and Spider-Man patrols without his usual enthusiasm.

His parents definitely noticed the change. Natasha watched him closely with understanding sympathy, while Steve's concern manifested as hovering attentiveness.

Peter knew he should just tell his dad what was going on. Nat had agreed not to say anything yet, but the secrecy was weighing on him. Even Ned could tell Peter was off, though he hadn't confided Shuri's visit and their new relationship status yet.

Peter just needed to work up the nerve for what was sure to be one supremely awkward conversation with his overprotective super soldier father.

Fate seemed to make the decision for him one evening when Steve asked Peter to join him for dinner, just the two of them. Peter fidgeted nervously across the table from his dad, wondering if he somehow already knew.

But Steve just smiled gently. "We haven't spent much time together lately. Thought it'd be nice to catch up, just us."

Peter nodded, poking at his food. "Yeah totally. Good call."

Steve's brow furrowed slightly at his lackluster response, but he continued pleasantly. "How's school going? Keeping up okay?"

"Oh yeah, fine." Peter forced himself to make eye contact. "Classes are good. Decathlon team is gearing up for Regionals."

Steve smiled proudly at that. "Glad to hear it. And your neighborhood patrols? Anything interesting happening out there?"

Peter seized on the opening. "Actually, been pretty quiet on that front. Uh, probably because I'm a bit, y'know, distracted lately."

Steve leaned forward, giving him his full attention. "What's distracting you, son?" His tone was gentle, open. Peter took a deep breath. It was now or never.

"So I wanted to tell you...I've been spending time with someone. A girl. And it's kinda serious." He risked a glance up at his dad. "We're dating."

Steve blinked, clearly not having expected this. "Dating? Huh. Well that's...that's great, son." A slight frown marred his features. "Is it someone from your school?"

"Not exactly..." Peter chewed his lip nervously. "It's, uh, it's Shuri actually."

Dead silence greeted this bombshell. Peter watched a myriad of emotions ripple across his dad's face - confusion, shock, protectiveness. Finally Steve seemed to settle on cautious optimism.

"Shuri," he repeated. "As in, Princess of Wakanda Shuri?" At Peter's timid nod, Steve sat back heavily. "Wow. Okay. Wasn't really expecting that."

Peter rubbed his neck awkwardly. "Yeah, it kind of just happened while she was visiting. I really like her." He managed a small, hopeful smile. "She's pretty amazing, Dad."

Steve's expression softened at that. "Of that I have no doubt. Shuri is a remarkable young woman. royalty aside." He studied Peter's anxious face and seemed to come to a decision. "If she makes you happy, and you make her happy, then you have my support, son."

Peter slumped in relief. "Really? Oh thank you! I was kinda worried you'd freak out."

Steve chuckled wryly. "Believe me, my first instinct is to insist you're far too young to date anyone. But," he held up a hand to forestall Peter's protest, "your mom has reminded me that you're growing up, and I need to respect that." His eyes turned solemn. "Just promise me you'll be responsible and behave honorably. Don't rush into anything you're not ready for."

"Of course, I promise," Peter assured him quickly.

Steve nodded, seeming satisfied. He managed a teasing smile. "With dating comes responsibilities. So expect me to have a talk with you soon about...certain things."

Peter groaned, dropping his head onto his arms. "Oh my god Dad, please no. We really don't need to do that talk."

Steve laughed, reaching over to ruffle Peter's hair. "Sorry kiddo, it's my right as a father. But I'll keep it simple." His expression melted into a grin. "So tell me more about you and Shuri. When did this happen?"

Peter launched into the full story, encouraged by his dad's warmth. It felt like a huge weight had lifted now that it was all out in the open. Even the prospect of an excruciatingly awkward 'responsible dating' talk couldn't dim his happiness.

Peter floated along on a cloud for the next few days, buoyed by his dad's support. Natasha noticed his improved mood immediately.

"I'm guessing it went well telling your father?" she asked knowingly over breakfast one morning.

Peter smiled into his cereal. "Yeah, way better than I expected. Dad was really cool about it."

Natasha laughed. "See? I told you Steve would come around once the shock wore off. He wants you to be happy." She cocked her head thoughtfully. "Shuri's brother on the other hand...that reaction I'm quite curious to see."

Peter nearly choked on his spoonful of milk. "Oh man, I didn't even think about King T'Challa finding out!" He looked at Natasha wide-eyed. "He's not gonna like, banish me from Wakanda or something is he?"

"I'm sure he'll be reasonable. Shuri won't allow anything else," she assured him amusedly.

Peter was slightly less anxious after his mom talked him down over breakfast. She was right - T'Challa cared about Shuri's wellbeing above all else. He just hoped the king extended that care to anyone dating his sister.

Thoughts of how to win over any disapproving siblings occupied Peter's mind all through morning classes. He was so preoccupied that he almost didn't notice the sleek black car idling outside school at lunchtime.

The back door opened and Happy Hogan leaned out. "You coming or what, kid? Lets move it."

Peter hurried over, confusion creasing his brow. "Happy? What's going on, is Mr. Stark here?"

"Yup, now get in. We're on a schedule."

Nonplussed, Peter slid into the backseat beside Tony. "Uh, hi Mr. Stark. Is everything okay? Do you need Spider-Man or something?"

Tony shook his head, fiddling with his sunglasses. "Nope, nothing world-saving today. Thought you and I could chat over lunch. If that works." He shot Peter a tight smile that seemed to hold a hint of...nervousness?

"Oh, sure!" Peter agreed easily. He liked getting to hang out with his mentor and was happy to skip school cafeteria food. "Where are we going?"

"You'll see." Tony lowered the privacy screen, effectively ending that line of discussion.

Peter settled back, watching the city roll by curiously. After twenty minutes, they pulled up outside a familiar highrise building.

"No way, we're going to Stark Tower?" Peter asked excitedly.

"Well I'm certainly not eating the mystery meat tacos at your school," Tony responded wryly as he led the way inside.

They took the elevator up to one of the executive dining floors. Tony procured them a secluded table overlooking the skyline, keeping up an idle stream of small talk while they ate.

Finally over dessert, he cleared his throat awkwardly. "So, uh, your father mentioned you've started seeing someone. Princess Shuri, specifically." At Peter's surprised look, he continued, "Yeah, Steve told me yesterday. Said you two are dating now?"

Peter fidgeted under the probing stare. "Oh, uh, yeah we are. For a little while now. It just sorta happened." He risked a glance at Tony. "Is that...okay?"

Tony looked briefly taken aback. "Okay? Of course it's okay, kid." His expression softened. "Look, your personal life is your business. But Steve wanted me to have a little chat, make sure you're being, you know..." he made air quotes, "'responsible and respectful' now that you've got a girlfriend."

Peter stared down at his ice cream, willing the floor to swallow him. This was so much worse than he'd anticipated. "Oh god. Can we please just, not?" he mumbled.

But Tony held up a hand. "Normally I would 100% avoid this level of awkwardness. However, Cap gave me his Disappointed in You face and said it was my duty as your mentor." He shrugged helplessly. "So just grin and bear it for five minutes, okay?"

Peter slumped back in resignation. "Fine. But I already know all this stuff, trust me."

"Good to hear." Tony cleared his throat again before launching into a clipped, clinical rundown of topics like consent and intimacy and protection. Peter kept his burning face hidden behind his hands the entire time, willing it to end.

Finally Tony concluded with, "And you can always come to me or your parents with any questions. Though for the love of god, try to avoid that."

Peter risked peeking through his fingers to find Tony also looking traumatized. "Are we done now? Please say yes."

Tony nodded vehemently. "Thank Thor, yes. Let's pretend this never happened and order ten pizzas. Sound good?"

"God yes," Peter agreed fervently. They busied themselves with ordering enough food to erase the past ten minutes from their brains.

Once they'd stuffed themselves into a comfortable food coma, Tony visibly braced himself before meeting Peter's gaze. "In all seriousness kid...I get the appeal of an older, worldly girl. But don't do anything before you're ready, or just because you think it'll keep her interested. The right person will wait for you."

Peter ducked his head, touched. "I know. Shuri would never rush me. She's amazing." He smiled softly. "But I really appreciate you looking out for me." Impulsively, he reached over to hug Tony.

After a startled second, Tony patted his back a bit awkwardly. "Anytime, kid. I've got your back." He ruffled Peter's hair as they separated. "Now eat your weight in churros so we can forget this ever happened."

Peter laughed, the tension of the uncomfortable talk fading. He knew he was lucky to have so many people who cared about him in their own ways. Even if it resulted in some truly mortifying conversations.

Over the next week, Peter slowly adjusted to the idea that all the important adults in his life now knew about his relationship with Shuri. It was kind of nice not having to hide it anymore, even if it meant fielding lots of well-meaning questions.

The only one whose reaction he hadn't gotten yet was King T'Challa himself. Peter wavered between curiosity and dread over when that inevitable video call would come.

He didn't have long to wait. Late one evening as Peter was getting ready for bed, Friday alerted him to an incoming call from Wakanda's royal palace.

Peter gulped, combing his fingers anxiously through his hair before accepting the call. T'Challa's solemn face flickered into view. "Good evening, Peter. I hope I haven't caught you at a bad time."

"No, Your Majesty, now is fine," Peter assured him, hoping his nerves didn't show.

T'Challa nodded. "I wished to speak with you directly, rather than ask others. Best to hear the truth from the source." He studied Peter silently for a moment. "I understand you have been spending much time with my sister."

Peter's mouth went dry. This was exactly the overprotective grilling he'd feared. "Y-yes sir. Shuri's one of my closest friends," he managed.

"Indeed. And now perhaps something more than friends, from what I gather," T'Challa guessed shrewdly.

Peter fought the urge to squirm under that piercing stare. "I deeply care about and respect your sister," he said carefully. "We recently realized our feelings might be romantic. Shuri makes me really happy." He met T'Challa's gaze steadily, willing him to understand.

T'Challa was silent so long Peter worried the call had frozen. But finally he nodded slowly. "Shuri has always been an excellent judge of character. If she has chosen you, that speaks highly of your spirit."

Peter's shoulders slumped in relief. "Thank you, sir. Shuri means everything to me. Her happiness and safety will always be my priority."

T'Challa looked pleased by his fervent sincerity. "I believe you, Peter, and I appreciate you speaking plainly with me. But know this." His expression turned flinty. "If any harm comes to my sister on your account, accident or no, there will be nowhere you can hide from me."

Peter paled slightly but nodded quickly. "Understood, sir. I would expect nothing less."

T'Challa's serious demeanor melted into a small smile. "Good. Then we have an understanding between men." His tone turned brisk. "I will not keep you any longer. Send Shuri my love when you speak with her."

"Will do. Goodnight, Your Highness." Peter sagged back against his pillows after the call ended. That could've gone so much worse. He had King T'Challa's blessing, albeit with thinly veiled threats layered underneath. Peter couldn't really blame the man - he'd do anything to protect Shuri too.

He fell asleep with a smile, excited to tell his girlfriend about overcoming the final parental hurdle standing in their way. The future stretched out before them, bright and full of promise.

The Quinjet landed smoothly on Wakanda's camouflaged border pad. The rear hatch lowered and Steve stepped out, gazing around cautiously.

"So far so good. No sign of trouble."

Natasha and Peter followed him down the ramp, with Vision and Wanda close behind. A battery of Dora Milaje warriors awaited them, General Okoye at the head.

She inclined her head respectfully to Steve. "Captain. The king awaits your arrival." Her curious gaze swept over the rest of the group before settling on Peter. "Young Spider. It is good to see you again, though I wish it were happier circumstances that bring you back to us."

Peter nodded solemnly. "Me too, General. But thank you for granting us refuge here."

Okoye's expression softened fractionally. "Any ally of Wakanda and the royal family is welcome to our protection." She gestured to the transport vehicles. "Come. We have much to prepare before the enemy arrives."

The group split up between transports flanked by Dora Milaje escorts. Peter fidgeted anxiously during the ride to the capital, nerves and excitement warring within him.

It had been months since he last saw Shuri. But now here he was again, reunited by grim necessity. Thanos and his quest for power threatened not just one life, like with Ego and Quill - but half the universe if they failed to stop him.

Peter glanced around at their small band of heroes. Could they really win this? So much was uncertain, but Peter had to believe this wouldn't be the end. He couldn't accept any other option.

When they arrived at the palace, T'Challa was waiting to greet them. But before he could speak, a joyful cry rang out.

"Peter!"

Shuri came sprinting down the steps, throwing herself into his arms. Peter staggered back a step but steadied them quickly, wrapping her in a fierce embrace.

"I've missed you so much, beloved," Shuri whispered, face pressed against his neck.

Peter's breath hitched, relief crashing through him. "I've missed you too. Every day."

They held on for a long moment, letting all else fall away. But reality could be ignored only so long.

Reluctantly Shuri pulled back, though she kept a tight grip on Peter's hands. Up close he could see the strain around her eyes.

"How are you holding up?" he asked gently, tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

Shuri's smile didn't reach her eyes. "Ready for battle, as always. Though I wish it were not coming to our home." She shook her head briskly, expression clearing. "But come, there are important introductions to make."

Only then did Peter remember they had an audience. He shot T'Challa an apologetic look that the king waved off with a fondly exasperated smile. Shuri just laughed. "Do not worry, they will get used to it."

The others looked various degrees of amused. Natasha stepped forward, inclining her head graciously to T'Challa. "Thank you for granting us asylum, Your Highness. We will try not to impose too long."

"You are welcome here as long as needed, Natasha," T'Challa responded solemnly. "Wakanda protects its own. And you are all family now."

His warm welcome settled something in Peter's chest. They were among friends here. Whatever came next, they would face it together.

After quick introductions all around, Shuri wasted no time dragging Peter off alone while the others conferred strategy. They ended up in her private lab space, perched side by side on a worktable.

"I know the timing could be better, but I'm really glad you're here," Peter said quietly.

Shuri laced their fingers together. "As am I. Though I wish it were not like this." She searched his face worriedly. "You seem troubled, my love. Tell me."

Peter stared down at their joined hands. "It's just...everything lately. Makes it hard to feel hopeful, you know? Seems like the world is ending." He shook his head ruefully. "Not the most upbeat attitude, I know."

Shuri tilted his chin up firmly. "Your fears do you credit. But remember why we fight. For life, for light. That is always worth preserving."

Peter let her certainty bolster his flagging spirit. "You're right. We can do this. Together." He managed a lopsided grin. "Might help if you design me an awesome vibranium suit though."

Shuri kissed his cheek, eyes sparkling happily. "Well, since you asked so nicely..." She hopped up and crossed to a storage locker, retrieving a familiar object.

Peter's eyes widened. "My suit! You finished it?"

"Of course. I don't abandon projects so easily." She held it out proudly.

Peter took it reverently, awestruck by her genius once again. "Shuri, I don't even know what to say. Thank you!"

She waved off his gratitude. "It was truly a labor of love. But come, try it on! We must ensure the fit is perfect."

Grinning, Peter ducked behind her privacy screen to change. The new suit molded to him like a second skin, vibranium weave flexing fluidly with his every move. He flipped out from behind the screen with a whoop of delight.

"This is so epic! I love it." Unable to resist showing off a bit for his girlfriend, Peter launched into a series of twists and flips around the lab.

Shuri watched, laughing delightedly. "Excellent! The mobility exceeds projections." She stepped closer, adjusting a shoulder seam minutely. "There. Now it is perfect for my spider warrior."

Peter's chest swelled with emotion. "This is the best gift ever. I don't deserve you."

"Oh, I think you do." Shuri smiled up at him tenderly. "We find light in each other when times seem darkest. That is rare and precious."

"Yeah," Peter whispered. He cradled her face gently, heart full to bursting. "I love you, Shuri. So much." It was the first time he'd voiced the depth of his feelings.

Shuri's breath caught, eyes suddenly glistening. "And I love you, Peter Romanoff." She pulled him down into a fierce, desperate kiss.

Peter poured everything he felt into it - all his hope, fear, and devotion. They clung together like two drowning people tossed adrift on a stormy sea who'd found solid ground at last.

When they finally parted just enough to breathe, Shuri brushed trembling fingers over his lips. "No matter what comes, hold onto this. Let love be your compass home."

Peter turned his head to press a fervent kiss to her palm. Their linked hands over his heart said the rest.

Whatever fate awaited, they would weather the storm side by side.

When Steve came looking for Peter later, he found them wrapped up together fast asleep atop a cot in the corner of Shuri's lab. He paused in the doorway, features softening fondly at the sight.

Too soon life would force them apart again. But this moment was theirs to cherish, two souls entwined against the darkness. Sending up a silent prayer, Steve slipped away as quietly as he'd come. They deserved this small pocket of peace while it lasted.

By unspoken agreement, no one disturbed the couple for the rest of the day. Peter finally woke late that evening to find Shuri still slumbering beside him, Expression relaxed in sleep. He took a moment just to memorize every perfect detail before leaning down to brush a feather-light kiss over her forehead.

"Time to wake up, beautiful," he murmured.

Shuri's eyes fluttered open, lips curving into an immediate smile. "Best nap ever," she sighed, arching her back languidly.

Peter laughed. "Can't argue there." He slid his fingers idly through her curls. "We should probably get back out there though."

"Mm, reality awaits." Stifling a yawn, Shuri sat up and stretched. She cupped Peter's cheek fondly. "Thank you for today, my love. I will hold it close always."

Peter turned his head to press a kiss into her palm. "Me too."

Hand in hand they made their way back out into the larger world, spirits bolstered. For a beautiful, blissful interlude, they'd found a pocket of peace to call their own. Not even fate could take that away.

Over the next couple days, war preparations progressed at a frenetic pace. Peter did his best to stay out of the way, letting the experts plan strategy for intercepting Thanos when he inevitably came.

Instead Peter focused on spending as much time with Shuri as he could, committing each precious moment together to memory. Long walks, lingering meals, quiet talks late into the night - trying to forget for just a little while that an unstoppable enemy approached.

But eventually their reprieve had to end. Thanos' arrival on Earth was imminent - it was time to take up arms and defend their shared home, however daunting the odds.

On the eve of battle, Peter found himself unable to settle all through dinner. A heaviness permeated the gathering, everyone lost in their own solemn thoughts.

Peter caught his parents' worried looks every time he pushed food around his plate instead of eating. But anxiety left no room for appetite.

Finally, he set his fork down decisively. "I'm gonna turn in early. Big day tomorrow and all." He managed a weak attempt at a carefree grin. "You know me, need my beauty rest."

Wanda reached over to pat his hand gently. "Sleep well, Peter. We will all need strength for what is to come."

He covered her hand with his and squeezed once. "You too, Wanda. Goodnight, everyone."

With a last small smile for his parents, Peter slipped away quickly before emotion could overwhelm him. He needed to see Shuri.

Peter found her standing out on a secluded balcony overlooking the city, facing away from him. He moved up behind her silently and wrapped both arms around her waist.

Shuri relaxed instantly back into his embrace. They stood without speaking for several minutes, just holding each other close beneath the glittering night sky.

Finally Shuri broke the silence softly. "I used to gaze up at these stars as a child and wish to someday visit them all. My brother would tease my fanciful dreams." She leaned her head against Peter's shoulder. "Now I would trade it all just to remain here with you, untouched by war."

Peter's throat tightened with emotion. "Yeah. Me too," he managed thickly.

Shuri turned in his arms to face him, eyes luminous in the moonlight. "But we must be strong now, my love. For our people, our family. Each other." She pressed a palm over his heart. "This light within you will guide us through the darkness."

Peter covered her hand with his own. "As long as we stick together, I know we can get through this." He attempted a wry grin. "Definitely glad I have this awesome new Spidey suit though. Seriously, best gift ever."

Shuri huffed a soft laugh. "You are most welcome. It looks rather dashing on you." She trailed her fingers idly over the spider emblem, expression turning serious once more.

"There is one more gift I wish to give you. A promise." She met his gaze steadily. "Whatever comes with the dawn, I will find you. Death itself could not keep us apart."

Peter's breath caught at the raw conviction in her words. He found himself nodding fiercely in agreement. "Yeah. Whatever it takes, we'll be together again. I believe that."

Needing to seal their vow, Peter gently cradled Shuri's face in both hands. He kissed her with aching tenderness, trying to convey everything words could not. She returned it just as fervently, fingers twisting in his shirt like she could anchor him to her through will alone.

When they finally broke apart, Peter kept his forehead pressed to Shuri's, eyes closed. Her rapid breaths mingled with his, two hearts beating as one.

"I love you," Peter whispered into the sacred space between them. "Always."

He felt Shuri's lips curve against his cheek. "Forever," she whispered back. A promise and a prayer on the wind.

In that perfect suspended moment, nothing else mattered but the two of them. Come what may with the dawn, they would carry this feeling, this unbreakable bond, through fire and blood and darkness.

Love would light their way home.

When the screams of Wakandan soldiers sounded at sunrise over Wakanda, it shattered the peace irreparably. War had come to their doorstep.

Peter quickly suited up and made his way out to the palace landing pads where the others were gathering. He spotted his parents off to one side speaking intensely with T'Challa.

Steve noticed him first, expression tightening. "Peter. You shouldn't be out here." He gripped Peter's shoulders firmly. "This fight is beyond you. Go inside where it's safe."

But Peter shook his head vehemently. "No way! I can help, I have to." He lifted his chin. "You can't make me hide while everyone I care about is out there risking their lives."

Steve sighed heavily, clearly seeing the determination in Peter's eyes. He exchanged a resigned look with Natasha before focusing back on Peter.

"Alright. But you stick close to Shuri and protect each other if the battle comes this far." His face softened, though worry still lurked in the creases around his eyes. "I need you to be safe, son."

Impulsively, Peter threw his arms around Steve in a fierce hug. After a brief surprised hesitation, his dad hugged him back just as tightly. They clung together for a long moment before Peter forced himself to step back.

He turned to Natasha, trying to memorize every detail of her beloved face. She framed his face gently in both hands.

"Be smart and trust your instincts, little spider. But also remember what I've taught you - wait for the right moment to strike. Patience can turn the battle."

Peter nodded, blinking back sudden tears. Natasha pulled him down to press a lingering kiss to his forehead. "I love you. Everything will be alright," she murmured fervently against his skin. Like saying it with enough conviction could make it true.

Unable to speak past the tightness in his throat, Peter simply hugged her as hard as he could. She clung to him just as fiercely before letting go.

With a last shared look heavy with meaning, Steve and Natasha moved away to join the other fighters. Peter watched them until they disappeared from view, heart in his throat.

Shuri appeared at his side silently. Without a word, she slipped her hand in his and held on tightly. Peter squeezed back gratefully. No matter what happened now, at least they were together.

He had to believe it would be enough.

Thanos and his forces proved unstoppable even for Wakanda's formidable defenses and the Avengers' valiant stand.

When the alien drop ships began breaking through and spilling out endless soldiers, Shuri pulled Peter down into the safety of her lab. They watched helplessly on security feeds as the fight moved closer.

"I should be out there," Peter muttered, pacing restlessly. "They need me."

Shuri grabbed his shoulders, stilling him. "Our family fights bravely. We must not distract them with additional worry." At his tortured look, she softened. "Patience, my love. When the moment comes, we will be ready."

So Peter forced himself to endure the agonizing wait, trusting his teammates to hold strong. Until everything went suddenly, horribly wrong.

A burst of searing energy lit up the screens as a beam of light streaked down from the sky outside. Shuri gasped, hands flying to her kimoyo beads. "Something breaches the dome! Its power..." She looked up at Peter with frightened eyes. "It is him. Thanos."

Peter's gut twisted with dread. This was it. The endgame they had tried so hard to prevent. Half the universe hung in the balance of the next few critical moments.

Grabbing Shuri's hand, Peter sprinted with her up into the palace. They emerged outside just as the barrier dome flickered and died. Across the grass, Thanos loomed menacingly over a beaten Vision.

Peter reacted on instinct, shooting a web that yanked Thanos' gauntleted hand away inches before he could seize the Mind Stone. "You're not getting that stone today, ugly!" he yelled defiantly.

Distracted, Thanos glanced up with a snarl. Peter barely had time to register Steve, Thor and T'Challa renewing their attack before a blast of energy sent him flying backwards.

He hit the ground hard, vision swimming. Blinking grit from his eyes, Peter struggled to regain his feet. Thanos had shaken off the new attackers and was reaching again for Vision.

"No!" Peter shot another web desperately, but already knew he wouldn't make it in time. He could only watch helplessly as Thanos tore the Mind Stone from Vision's head, the android's body instantly going dark and lifeless.

An anguished cry rent the air. Peter turned to see Wanda sprinting towards Vision's prone form, tears streaking her cheeks. "No, please no!" she sobbed, cradling his head tenderly.

Rage ignited within Peter, strengthening his shaky limbs. They couldn't let Vision's loss be in vain. With a raw scream, he launched himself at Thanos again. If he could just separate the gauntlet from that massive purple fist...

But Thanos merely backhanded him aside almost casually. Peter tumbled to the grass, head spinning. Through wavering vision, he saw the hulking enemy turn unhurriedly, six Infinity Stones now gleaming ominously from the golden gauntlet.

Pain. That was all Peter's world had narrowed down to as he lay gasping shallowly in the grass. His head spun and limbs spasmed uselessly whenever he tried moving.

Through the ringing in his ears came the sounds of renewed fighting, but it was obvious Thanos would not be denied his victory now. Peter blinked grit from his eyes and saw the hulking enemy turn, six Infinity Stones gleaming ominously from the gauntlet.

Rage and helplessness warred within him. They had failed. Half the universe would now pay the price, including everyone Peter loved.

He searched desperately for his parents in the chaos, finally spotting them across the field locked in combat back-to-back with Sam and Bucky. Peter tried to call out but only managed a choked gurgle.

The edges of his vision darkened dangerously. I'm sorry, he wanted to cry out. I couldn't protect you.

Suddenly Shuri's beloved face swam before him. Peter latched onto it with the last of his fading consciousness. Shuri, I love you, please forgive me...

Just before the void claimed him, Peter felt a blast of fiery energy surge through his body. Strength returned to his limbs, wounds knitting rapidly back together. His vision cleared, senses hyper-focused.

Gasping, Peter bolted upright. Power thrummed through his veins, raw and primal. His gaze zeroed in on Thanos across the field, rage and desperation driving him now. With a feral scream, he charged straight at the enemy.

Several things seemed to happen at once then. Thor hurled his axe Stormbreaker at Thanos' chest in a lightning-quick throw. At the same time, Peter fired a web that yanked the gauntlet clean off the Titan's hand milliseconds before the axe found its mark.

Thanos staggered back with a bellow, dark blood gushing from the deep chest wound. But he remained upright, massive fists swinging wildly.

Hardly thinking now, acting on pure instinct, Peter dove and grabbed the gauntlet where it had fallen. He braced himself for searing agony as the raw power of six Infinity Stones surged into him.

But no pain came. Instead, Peter felt exhilaration as ancient cosmic energies fused with his own mutated cells. The gauntlet morphed, reshaping itself to fit his hand seamlessly.

Distantly he registered stunned reactions around him - Thor gaping in disbelief, Steve and Natasha crying out in warning. But their voices faded beneath the glorious symphony of power singing through Peter's veins.

He rose slowly, body thrumming with vibrant, limitless energy. Turning to face Thanos, Peter lifted his gauntlet-clad hand with newfound purpose.

"You should not have come here, monster." His voice rang out clear and terrible. "Now face justice for your sins."

Thanos' eyes widened in disbelief and dawning fear. He opened his mouth, likely to make threats or barter, but Peter was done listening. These stones answered to him now.

Snapping his fingers, Peter envisioned Thanos' severed head at his feet. Reality reshaped itself instantly to match his will.

Thanos' massive decapitated body toppled ponderously. His head bounced and rolled, maw frozen in a final expression of shock.

An eerie silence engulfed the battlefield. Everyone stared at Peter in stunned disbelief. He hardly noticed, senses still thrumming with power.

There was one more wrong to right here. Turning, Peter focused on Vision's grey, lifeless form. He lifted the gauntlet again, fingertips glowing orange as he harnessed the Time Stone.

"Return," he intoned. Green tendrils swirled around Vision, reversing the destruction until his synthetic cells knit themselves back together.

With a sharp gasp, Vision jerked upright, very much alive once more. Wanda let out a cry of joy, flinging herself into his arms. "You're alive! You came back to me."

Vision cradled her head tenderly, still seeming disoriented. "How...I do not understand..."

"Pretty sure we have this kid to thank."

Peter looked over to see Sam gesturing at him with a mixture of awe and wariness. The other heroes were regarding Peter with similar expressions as they cautiously approached.

Thor summoned Stormbreaker back to his hand, eyes troubled. "The boy was able to wield the full might of the Infinity Stones and live. I know not what dark power has awakened within him..."

Steve quickly stepped between them, hands raised placatingly. "This is still Peter, son of my blood. He saved us all, that's what matters." He shot Thor a quelling look before turning slowly to Peter. "Son? Are you well?"

Blinking, Peter focused on his dad's concerned face. The fiery energy still crackled through him, but fainter now. He managed a shaky nod.

"Yeah...yeah I'm okay, Dad." Speaking took more effort than it should. Peter frowned down at the gleaming gauntlet still covering his hand. "This thing packs a hell of a punch though."

"That is putting it mildly." T'Challa approached cautiously, eyes wary. "Peter, I do not doubt your noble intentions. But power like that cannot remain unchecked. Please, remove the gauntlet before it consumes the goodness in your spirit."

Shuri stepped up to stand shoulder to shoulder with her brother. "T'Challa speaks wisdom, my love. You saved us all, as was your right. But this power was not meant for mortal hands." Her eyes shone with faith and pride. "Trust in yourself. You need no gauntlet to be remarkable."

Heart swelling, Peter focused on slowly loosening his white-knuckled grip on the gauntlet. He felt the Stones resisting, sinking addictive tendrils deeper into his cells. Gritting his teeth, he pulled harder.

"Come...on..." The metal creaked in protest. Peter screamed as atoms were wrenched apart.

Then suddenly it released him. The gauntlet fell smoking to the grass. Peter collapsed to his knees, head bowed and panting. Gentle hands caught him, lowering him the rest of the way.

"Easy, little spider. I have you." Natasha's voice soothed his ragged nerves like cool water on a burn. Peter sagged limply against her, every atom in his body screaming in protest. But his mind felt blissfully clear and unburdened.

He managed to twist his head enough to meet Shuri's relieved gaze. "Hey," he rasped with a weak grin. "We won."

Joy broke across her face like the rising sun. Shuri surged forward to capture his lips in a fierce kiss, heedless of their audience. Peter smiled into it tiredly, the last of the tense energy leaving his body.

When Shuri finally released him, her eyes shone with exhilarated triumph. "Indeed we did, my love! Together, as I knew we would."

"Yeah. Together." The word came out slightly slurred as bone-deep exhaustion took hold. Peter's eyelids fluttered closed without his permission.

Distantly he felt his dad scoop him up effortlessly into his arms. "I've got you, son. Rest now." The deep rumbling voice and steady sway of Steve's gait lulled Peter into peaceful oblivion.

They were safe. His family was safe. That was all that mattered.

When Peter awoke what felt like days later, it took him a minute to get his bearings. The luxurious bed and bright sunlight streaming through open windows placed him in one of the palace's guest rooms.

He sat up cautiously, pleasantly surprised to find his body free of any lingering soreness. Whatever incredibly advanced medical care they must have used on him had worked miracles. Peter felt better than he had in ages.

Sliding out of bed, he found someone had left fresh clothes that fit him perfectly. He quickly changed into the soft tunic and pants before venturing out in search of answers.

The palace corridors were much more subdued than Peter remembered. He spotted clusters of people murmuring in low, somber tones as they went about various tasks. An air of mourning hung over the place, though whether for lives or liberty lost, Peter didn't know.

He was descending a grand staircase when he finally glimpsed a familiar face. Thor stood conversing with T'Challa, looking troubled. But his expression cleared the instant he noticed Peter.

"Young spider! You're awake at last." He bounded up the steps to grasp Peter's shoulders, studying him intently. "And looking quite well. We had begun to fear you might sleep forever after your incredible feat."

Peter flushed under the scrutiny. "I, uh, feel pretty normal actually. Just really hungry." As if on cue, his stomach rumbled loudly. "How long was I out anyway?"

"Nearly three days," T'Challa informed him gravely. "You expended much energy wielding forces never meant for mortal form. What you survived is nothing short of miraculous." His eyes were solemn, but not mistrustful as before.

Peter rubbed his neck awkwardly, memories of that spectacular power still hazy and surreal. "I honestly don't remember a lot after grabbing the gauntlet. Just knew I had to stop Thanos."

Thor gripped his shoulder bracingly. "You showed courage worthy of the greatest Asgardian warriors. I could not have defeated Thanos without you, young one. You have my eternal gratitude."

Peter's eyes widened. Thor, an actual god, was looking at him with sincere respect. "Wow. Thanks." He ducked his head, unsure how else to respond.

Luckily he was saved from figuring it out by Steve and Natasha's arrival. They both froze at the sight of him up and about before hurrying over.

"Peter, thank God." Steve crushed him in a tight hug while Natasha immediately started checking him over for any lingering issues.

"Three days without so much as a twitch had us all on edge," she muttered, tilting his chin this way and that. "Don't ever do that again, little spider."

Peter huffed a soft laugh. "Trust me, I'll try really hard not to." He returned his dad's bone-cracking hug fiercely.

"I'm okay though, honestly. Just really starving."

Steve drew back, keeping both hands firmly on Peter's shoulders. His eyes shone suspiciously bright. "Of course, you must be. Let's get you fed."

The little group made their way to a small dining area where food was quickly procured for Peter. He dug in ravenously under his parents' fondly indulgent gazes. As he ate, Peter got filled in on events of the past few days.

The immediate aftermath of the battle had focused on recovery efforts and removing all traces of Thanos' invading forces. T'Challa and Shuri had addressed their people, spinning a version of events that presented Peter as an ally of Wakanda who helped turn the tide against their would-be conqueror.

"It seemed wisest not to reveal the full circumstances around your incapacitation," T'Challa explained. "Such power in untested hands unnerves even allies. But all know we owe you great debt."

Peter just nodded, unbothered. He was happy keeping a low profile after hisbrief foray into cosmic fame.

Steve promised to explain more later about beginnings of a structure for governing use of the Infinity Stones now under protection back at Avengers headquarters. "The important thing is they'll be kept from harming innocents ever again."

Peter agreed wholeheartedly. He never wanted to lay eyes on another Infinity Stone as long as he lived.

Soon his parents had to take their leave to meet with T'Challa's council, but not before Natasha whispered she'd sent for Shuri. Peter's pulse quickened in anticipation of their reunion.

When Shuri arrived minutes later, she paused just inside the doorway, drinking in the sight of him awake and whole. The most radiant smile lit up her face.

"Peter." She crossed the room in quick strides to cradle his face tenderly. "My love, my heart." Tears shone in her eyes as she touched her forehead to his. "I have missed you."

Peter turned his head to press a fervent kiss into her palm. "I'm here now. We're together." Nothing else mattered but that.

Shuri kissed him soundly, chasing away the lingering shadows between them. When she finally drew back, mischief danced in her eyes again.

"Now come. We have a celebratory feast to attend, and many friends eager to see the brave hero awake at last." Laughing at his horrified expression, she tugged him along.

And so Peter let himself get swept up in the whirlwind of events to honor their victory. He knew the questions and complications would arise again soon. But today was for rejoicing life's fragility and laughing in the face of fate.

Tomorrow could wait a little longer.

Over the next couple of days, Peter had to recount his version of events multiple times for various leaders and council members.

He tried to describe wielding the Infinity Stones in as vague and nonspecific terms as he could. Even he didn't fully understand what had happened in the heat of the moment.

His parents, Shuri and T'Challa ran interference whenever the questioning became too intense. But curiosity about Peter was running rampant both within Wakanda and the outside world. He was relieved when talk finally moved on to broader issues of rebuilding.

Unfortunately, they couldn't remain secluded in Wakanda forever. Duty was calling Steve and Natasha back to New York to help manage the Infinity Stones situation.

Peter knew they had to go, but his heart still sank as their departure day arrived. He stood staring dismally out his window at the landing pads where the Quinjet was prepping for takeoff.

A light knock preceded Natasha slipping into his room. "Time to go, little spider."

Peter turned and let her fold him into a tight embrace. "I know, I know. You and Dad have Avenger stuff. It's okay."

Natasha smoothed a hand over his curls soothingly. "We'll see you back in New York soon. With everything that's happened here..." She hesitated, seeming to choose her words carefully. "People will likely have questions when Spider-Man reappears."

Peter grimaced. "Ugh, yeah. I kind of forgot about the whole secret identity thing." He looked at her anxiously. "So what do we do?"

"For now, nothing." Natasha cupped his cheek gently. "Recover here. Lay low and let your father and I handle it." She kissed his forehead. "Just be your brilliant self. We'll make it right."

Peter hugged her tight, drawing strength from her steady surety. She was right - they'd tackle this together.

Too soon Natasha had to pull away. With a last tender caress of his curls, she slipped out to join Steve on the jet. Peter watched until it disappeared over the horizon, stomach churning with unease about the unknown future.

Over the next couple weeks, Peter settled into a comfortable routine in Wakanda. He passed peaceful days working in Shuri's lab and exploring the vibrant capital with her. The wonders of Wakanda never ceased to amaze him.

Peter kept in frequent contact with his parents back in New York as they worked to establish the new foundation governing use of the Infinity Stones. They seemed confident its oversight structure would ensure the stones remained safeguarded for the greater good.

Steve and Natasha also confirmed that after some intense debate, the former Avengers had collectively agreed not to reveal Spider-Man's identity. His age made the others uncomfortable with the kind of frenzied attention Peter would likely face post-battle.

Peter felt hugely relieved. He was happy staying in Wakanda away from prying eyes. Here he could just be himself, or Shuri's boyfriend. Not an object of scrutiny and mistrust.

True to her word, Natasha soon called to say they'd smoothed things over enough for his return. Peter's stomach swooped anxiously at the prospect of heading back out into the world again.

Sensing his unease, Shuri took his hands gently. "Wherever you go, I am with you. We will face the unknown future side by side, yes?"

Peter brought their joined hands to his lips, kissing Shuri's knuckles softly. "Together," he agreed, drawing strength from her steady gaze.

They spent his last idyllic day in Wakanda enjoying a picnic lunch at their cliffside spot overlooking the capital. As the setting sun gilded the sky in glorious hues, Peter pulled Shuri close and just breathed her in, memorizing everything about this perfect moment.

Whatever came next, they would be together. That was all that mattered.

Peter insisted no fanfare was needed to see him off the next day. But T'Challa and Shuri both came to bid him personal farewells.

"Thank you for everything, Your Highness," Peter said sincerely to T'Challa. "I'll never forget Wakanda's generosity and protection."

T'Challa clasped his shoulder warmly. "It was an honor to stand beside you in battle, young warrior. You shall always have sanctuary here." He held Peter's gaze solemnly. "Whatever the wider world may think of your gifts, know there are those who see your true noble spirit."

Peter had to quickly blink back tears at the unexpected kindness. He wasn't used to anyone besides his small family circle seeing him so clearly.

Shuri embraced him fiercely next. "Do not let petty small minds ever dull your light," she whispered against his hair. "Stay true, and you will change the world someday."

Peter's throat tightened painfully. "I wish you could come with me," he rasped out.

Shuri kissed him sweetly. "We will see each other again soon. The heart has no limits." She rested her palm over his beating heart.

With a shaky breath, Peter covered her hand with his own. "I'll come back to you. I promise."

Their joined hands said the rest. One final kiss, and then Peter settled into his seat aboard the Quinjet, taking one last look back at Shuri's beloved face before the ramp closed. His heart felt heavy leaving her and Wakanda behind again, even knowing it was only temporary this time.

As the jet lifted off and the Wakandan capital shrank into the distance, Peter tried to quell the uneasy churning in his stomach. He was grateful his identity had been protected, but part of him worried how long that anonymity could last. The world was watching now more than ever for any glimpse of the mysterious young hero who had defeated Thanos.

Natasha noticed his pensive expression immediately when she came to sit beside him. "You're overthinking again, little spider. I can see the gears turning from here."

Peter huffed a soft laugh. "That obvious, huh?" He ran both hands through his hair distractedly. "I know I should just be patient and lay low like you said. But the longer I'm out of the public eye, the more questions it'll raise about Spider-Man's disappearance. We can't avoid it forever."

Natasha considered this, eyes thoughtful. "No, you're right. We'll need to get ahead of this soon." She shot him a reassuring look. "But on our terms when the time is right. Don't forget, you have the Avengers in your corner now. We'll figure something out."

Peter nodded, letting her confidence bolster his own. "Yeah, you're right. And hey, maybe I can use the break from the spotlight to just be normal for a bit." Even as he said it, he knew the hope was naive. There was no turning back the clock on his life now. For better or worse, he'd been called to something greater.

Natasha easily read his conflicted expression. She wrapped an arm around his shoulders. "I know it's a lot to have this power and responsibility so young. But you don't have to carry the weight alone, little spider. We're all here for you."

Peter leaned into her side, soaking up her steady strength. "I know. Thank you, Mom."

They sat together quietly until it was time to strap in for landing. No matter what uncertainties lay ahead, Peter took comfort knowing his family would help him navigate them, one step at a time.

The ramp lowered onto the upstate New York Avengers headquarters landing pad. Steve was waiting below and came striding forward to pull Peter into a tight hug as soon as his feet hit the ground.

"Welcome home, son. How was the flight?"

Peter returned the embrace fiercely. "Long, but good." He glanced around curiously as they headed inside. "So what's been going on here while I was away? Anything exciting?"

Steve and Natasha exchanged an amused look over his head. "You could say that," Nat said wryly. "Especially where a certain Asgardian is concerned."

Before Peter could ask what she meant, the god in question came barreling down the hallway towards them. "Young spider returns!" Thor boomed jovially, sweeping a startled Peter up into a crushing bear hug.

"We feasted grandly in your honor last night! I shall have another cask opened now that you are back." Laughing, Thor slung a massive arm around Peter's shoulders and steered him away, regaling him loudly with tales of revelry in his absence.

Peter shot his chuckling parents a helpless grin over his shoulder before allowing himself to get swept up in the thunder god's enthusiastic welcome. He had missed the unique energy Thor brought to the compound.

Over dinner that night with the team, Peter got brought up to speed on the various projects underway to support Infinity Stone security and public transparency. He was relieved to hear oversight was being handled responsibly without succumbing to political agendas.

Tony gave him an approving nod across the table. "Gotta say, nice work back there stomping the big grape, kid. Thought we were cosmic dust for sure before you went nuclear on him."

Peter ducked his head, cheeks warming. "I still don't really know what happened. Just kind of reacted on instinct."

"Indeed, 'twas a truly legendary feat worthy of song!" Thor declared. He launched into an impromptu rumbling ballad in an unknown language that had Peter hiding his flaming face while the others laughed good-naturedly.

Later that night as Peter unpacked in his familiar bedroom, there was a light knock at his open door. He turned to see Wanda hovering in the hall with a small hesitant smile.

"I'm sorry to bother you. I just wanted to thank you again." She stepped closer, expression earnest. "What you risked for Vision...I will never forget it."

Peter waved off her gratitude. "After everything you've suffered, you deserve a win for once. I'm really glad I could help reunite you two again." Impulsively, he pulled her into a hug.

Wanda tensed briefly in surprise before melting into it. When they separated, her eyes were suspiciously bright. "You have a beautiful spirit, Peter Romanoff. Never let this world tarnish it." She squeezed his hand once before slipping away.

Peter got ready for bed with Wanda's words echoing in his mind. He had no idea what challenges lay ahead, both professionally as Spider-Man and personally as Peter Romanoff. But he took comfort knowing he didn't have to face them alone.

No matter what came next, his family and team of heroes would be by his side. That support meant everything. With their help, Peter knew he could get through whatever life threw at him.

He fell asleep smiling, treasuring the fond memories of his time in Wakanda close to his heart. The future seemed bright with possibility. He couldn't wait to discover where the journey led next. For now, it was enough just to be home.
