There is a reason I don’t go to bars anymore!
Ava was glad the week has passes so quickly but now it was Friday and that meant she had to follow through with Alex’s plan and go out tonight to the Waverider. She plowed through her closet for a good outfit. She didn’t go to bars anymore, hell she didn’t date anymore really. Hannah was her main concern for the last couple of years and she was fine with that after having her heart stomped on and being shot multiple times, she just threw herself into her family and work. Now she wanted to make sure she had the perfect outfit. If she was going to be confident, she had to have the right clothes on to make it happen. She finally found the top and jeans she was looking for, she hadn’t worn something like this in quite a while. There was a reason she didn’t go to bars anymore.
She kept her hair down because well if we were being honest, she knew women liked her hair and she liked it when they commented on it. So, she curled it a little just enough to really get the waves going around her shoulders. She did some light makeup to make her eyes pop and unbuttoned a few of her green button-down shirts front just showing enough to be sexy but not slutty. She looked at herself in the mirror the shirt was just enough to show off her cleavage one of her best features she thought, and her jeans fit perfectly around her butt. She was impressed with herself and ready to go. When she walked out of the bedroom and into the living room where Hannah was, she heard a whistle come from her sister.
“Look at you hot stuff!” Hannah snickered as Ava walked into the kitchen to grab some water.
“Shut it Gidget!” Ava said, she hadn’t told Hannah who she might see at the bar and who she might be dressing to impress. She just told her that Alex had convinced her to go out.
“So, where you going tonight?” Hannah said walking into the kitchen.
“Some bar with Alex.” She didn’t go into more detail just in case Sara had told Hannah she was going out tonight. Sara and Hannah had become quite good friends since Hannah started physical therapy. And she noticed that Hannah knew way to much about Sara’s day to day life than she should. Alex opened the door and announced herself.
“I’m here let’s get this party started!” She headed into the kitchen knowing that’s where Ava would be, Always a stickler for drinking water before alcohol.
“Where are you guys headed to tonight? Ava wont give me details?” Hannah asked as Alex walked in and looked over Ava. Waving her hands over Ava’s outfit.
“Nice Sharpe.” Smiling as she complimented Ava. Looking over at Hannah “I’m determined to get your sister laid!” Ava choked on her water and moved her body back to make sure it didn’t get all over her outfit.
“Jesus Alex!” Ava said as she grabbed a towel and started wiping up the water as Hannah laughed at her. “I’m not having sex tonight.”
“We’ll see.” Alex smirked. Hannah just kept laughing as Ava cleaned up her mess and gave Alex a death stare.
As they left the house Ava could hear Hannah yelling, she wasn’t waiting up for her. Once in the car Alex just started giggling to herself as Ava got more and more nervous. Once they pulled up it looked really busy as they parked and headed towards the bar.
“Okay Sharpe so here is the deal you need to mingle. Let her come to you.” Ava nodded like she was being coached it had been a long time since she had put herself out there and Alex knew she needed the pep talk. “You’re Ava Fucking Sharpe. Badass Major in the Marine Corps and sexy as hell in this outfit!”
“I one question?” Ava asks sternly
“What’s that?’”
“What is she doesn’t approach?” Ava had been thinking that the whole way here she knew she had to let Sara come to her. But now she was worried that Sara wouldn’t either notice her and or approach her.
“She will. If you make eye, contact with her believe you me she will come over and say hi. And that’s where you lay on the charm.” Alex smiled and started to walk towards the bar as Ava followed.
Once they entered the bar it was full bodies everywhere people dancing everywhere, People making out on the walls and maybe more. Alex grabbed Ava’s hand and pulled her to the bar so she could introduce Leo.
Leo was a nice-looking man with dark hair and a smug grin. When he saw Alex, he walked over and threw his hand out to greet her.
“Good to see you again Danvers.” He shook her hand and looked next to her at the stunning beauty of Ava. “Well hello there you must be Ava.” He put his hand out and Ava accepted it. She was actually quite impressed with him. “What can I get you ladies?”
“Two whiskey neat’s.” Alex said Leo nodded and started to make the drinks.
Ava took the time to turn and lean back on the bar to have a look around. It had been so long since she had been out in the world, she had forgotten what it was like. Bodies all over the place she could already feel eyes looking at her. Beautiful brunette at a table was looking her up and down, and on the other side of the room where the dance floor was there was another brunette eyeing her. She turned back around to face the bar just as Leo placed the drinks down and Alex handed her card over.
“Open me a tab Leo.” He nodded and took the card and went back to the other patrons. “How’s it looks out there?” Ava leaned towards her and said
“Not bad, definitely a lot of eyes looking this way.” She smirked it had been a while since she felt that confidence about her. She wasn’t full of herself by any means, but she knew when she tried, she looked good. “Same words still safe words?”
“You know it.” Alex said as she turned out to face the crowd with her drink in her hand. Followed by Ava as they sipped and drank, they just watched all the people settling in dancing and having a good time.
Ava watched the crowd her eyes wondering over quite a few people trying to find those piercing blue eyes she was hoping to see. Nobody else seemed to get her attention. Not to say there weren’t a lot of beautiful women there it was just Ava had her heart set on just one person at the moment. And that person consumed her thoughts and dreams. As she scanned through the room her eyes landing on a set of green eyes. Eyes she thought she would never see again eyes that met hers and a smile came across the face of the person they belonged too. Ava quickly turned and downed her drink.
“Fuck!” The word caused Alex to lean in and find out what was wrong. “Allison…Fuck”
Alex turned her eyes back to where Ava’s had been and saw Allison making her way towards them “Turn around and play it cool. She isn’t worth ruining our night and you fucking know it.”
Ava turned around and did exactly that up until Allison actually opened her mouth and spoke and all Ava wanted to do is ignore her. Which was a bit childish, but you know it was the first time Ava had seen her since they broke up.
“Hi Ava.” She smiled brightly and looked at Alex “Alex.” Her tone cold and harsh Alex was the first to respond.
“Allison, how are you? Break up any marriages lately?” This caused Ava to snort as she turned and grabbed her fresh drink that Leo had sat down.
Ava and Alex were so engrossed in dealing with Allison neither noticed when Sara and Laurel walked in the door. Laurel almost immediately saw Alex at the bar, and she stopped Sara. “Look Alex and Ava are here.” She said with a smile that quickly faded because Alex looked pissed, and Ava looked well she was pretty sure Ava looked pissed too, but she didn’t know her well enough to know. They were locked in a conversation with a women who had her back to them and they could see Alex’s body language was looking not good.
Sara watched as Alex and this girl exchanged words and Ava kept looking at Alex and even once had put her hand on Alex when she started to come out of her chair. Whatever was going on was not good, whoever that was she could tell Alex and Ava were not comfortable with her being there. Sara grabbed Laurel and they moved closer to the bar so they could hear what was going on. They stayed out of Ava and Alex’s view so they could hear. Allison was the first person they heard almost taunting Alex.
“Hey Alex break anyone’s nose lately?” Allison knew that would piss off Alex
“No.” She went to stand but Ava pushed her back. “But I’m sure due for a good fight if that’s what you’re asking.”
“What do you want Allison?” Ava’s voice was soft but not affectionate.
“I thought we could talk Ava.” Alex went to stand again but again was pushed back by Ava.
“I really don’t have anything to say.” Ava kept her cool
“But I do. I have things I would like to say. Things that I think we can talk about.” Allison was soft and trying to convince Ava to talk to her. But Alex wasn’t having it.
“Listen hear Allison.” Her voice dripping with anger. “I told you when I picked up her shit you stay the fuck away from her!” Ava loved this very protective side of Alex. They had gone through this breakup together in ever since of the word since it was both their girlfriends caught together. Yes, so Alex and Lauren had gotten into a fight that may have led to a broken nose. But shit happens.
“And what are you know Alex her girlfriend?” she shakes her hands between them it causes Alex to get even more angry and she goes to stand up.
Sara at this point had heard enough who was this bitch and why was she messing with Ava. How dare she mess with Ava...Nice, sexy, sweaty, stormy eyed, muscular, goddess…. What the fuck Lance get your shit together. She left Laurel standing there and quickly made her way over to where the women was and made her presence known.
“That would be me.” The women spun around on her heels to see the blonde standing there with a smile on her face. Ava sat straight up at the sight of Sara her eyes wide and roaming the top left little to the imagination and Ava liked what she saw. Sara winked at Ava when their eyes met. “Babe do I need to handle this? Or are you going to some and dance with me?” She looked at Ava who swallowed the lump in her throat.
“Sara, this is Allison.” Ava motioned between the two. Sara took a step into Allison’s personal space letting her know she was crossing a line.
“Charmed I’m sure.” Sara looks past her to Ava and holds out her hand. “let’s dance, Alex can deal with this.” She waves her hand up and down at Allison. Ava takes Sara’s hand and is brought out onto the dance floor with a huge grin on her face. She looks back as she is being pulled and see’s Allison storm off and Alex with a similar grin to hers as Laurel approaches her. Then she stops and looks as Sara pulls her closer into her and their eyes meet. “Sorry about that sounded like Alex was about to get into a bar fight.” She puts her arms on Ava’s shoulders and Ava counters by slowly putting her arms on Sara’s waist. She leans down to her ear to say something.
“That’s was the best thing that has ever happened to me!” Ava said with such a smile Sara couldn’t help but blush. Ava stood back straight and looked at her. The song that’s playing right now is slow and they are just swaying to the music looking at each other.
“Who was that?” Sara asked as she leaned up to Ava their bodies brushed slightly causing red to rush up from Ava’s neck to her face. Something Sara notices and make a mental note of.
“Allison.” Is the only words that come out of Ava’s mouth her body is on fire with Sara so close to her. And her brain is stopping again. She needs to form thoughts she can do this she needs to be able to talk to this woman if she has any chance. Confident be confident. She says to herself. “She is my ex” is what comes out next.
“Alex really doesn’t like her.” Sara continues.
“Not surprising seeing as how my ex and her ex were sleeping together.” It just flew out no filter maybe that wasn’t the best thing to say, but it was the truth.
“Oh shit. Well in that case let me go kick her ass.” Sara went to move, and Ava stopped her by pulling her closer and leaning down to her ear again. Her breath against Sara’s ear lit a fire inside of Sara one she hadn’t felt in a long time.
“I like you right where you are Sara.” Ava’s voice was almost a whisper but Sara’s heart skipped a beat and when she looked up into Ava’s eyes she felt her body pull closer to Ava and she gave in. moving her hands to Ava’s neck and sniggling up into Ava as they swayed to the music. Ava couldn’t believe this was happening, she was in her arms she fit perfectly.
Alex was at the bar with Laurel and they watched as the two got closer and closer and finally Alex turned back towards the bar smiling and Laurel noticed.
“So, this was your plan?” as she turned in towards the bar and leaned into Alex.
“Yep.” She made the P pop in the word as she said it. She knew if she could get Sara here that the would be drawn together, she had no idea fucking Allison would be there so that wasn’t supposed to happen. But fate works in weird ways Alex thought. “Just needed a little push is all.”
“A little push what about that girl you were about to beat the shit out of?” Laurel pointed to the girl who was watching Sara and Ava dancing.
“Oh, that was a bonus.” Alex said laughing, she knew Sara had pissed off Allison and she liked her even more now because of it. “That’s Ava’s Ex long story but the three of us have a bad history. Like I wanted to kick her ass, but Ava wouldn’t let me and then we got deployed and we moved on.” Laurel just stared at Alex and she knew there was more to the story. “Okay so her ex and my ex before Maggie were well, they were hooking up behind our backs.” Alex took another drink and tapped the bar for Leo to bring her another one.
“Sounds familiar. Well the cheating part.” Laurel mumbles
Alex shrugs, “Ava hasn’t exactly been lucky in the love department.” She turns and looks the dance floor where Sara and Ava are almost lost in their own world.
Ava and Sara had gotten lucky with two slow songs in a row they had been swaying together when an upbeat song came on and snapped them out of there spell both looking at each other not sure what to do now. So, Sara motioned to the bar and Ava shook her head and grabbed her hand walking her over to a dark corner where she felt like they could have privacy. Ava wanted to talk to Sara, and she figured maybe she could if she wasn’t being watched she knew Alex and Laurel were keeping tabs on them. Once they were in the space Ava had wanted, she slowly put Sara against the wall and just held onto her hand.
“I’m not that great at this.” Ava said but the music was too loud, and Sara couldn’t hear her, so she pulled her closer to her.
“I can’t hear you.” She motioned to the music. And Ava realized she would need to be closer, so she moved closer to her almost pinning Sara against the wall. Causing Sara’s breath to catch when Ava leaned in closer to her ear.
“I said I’m not to great at this.” Ava said again. Sara looked confused she didn’t understand what she was saying. So, Ava took the leap and told her the truth. “You make me nervous.” She stayed there near her ear so she could hear her response.
“What do you mean? Sara said almost like she was out of breath; Ava was so close to her she her heart was racing at the closeness and she was on fire where their bodies were touching.
“I walk into walls and say stupid shit when I am around you.” Ava pulled back to look into Sara’s eyes and she had smirk on her face.
“I thought you hated me.” Sara said. Ava shook her head and laughed. And leaned back into her ear.
“I don’t hate you.” She pulled back to see Sara still had the smirk and leaned back in “Would you go to dinner with me?” She pulled back to look at Sara and the smirk had now changed into that smile that made Ava feel like she was staring into the sun. And before Sara could answer Ava had moved back to her ear “You look beautiful by the way.” Sara grabbed her face and pushed her lips to Ava’s. Lightning bolts ran through both of their bodies as Ava deepened the kiss and leaned her body into Sara’s they both pulled apart with the need for air and rested their foreheads against each other. “Is that a yes.” Ava asked., and Sara smiled and nodded. Ava then grabbed Sara’s face and kissed her again this time with passion and fire she had been feeling for months now. Sara pulled her closer almost as if there was too much space between them when there was none. Her need Ava to be close to her was unbelievable Sara had never felt this fire before. Ava had never felt this connection before with anyone. The two of them stayed in that space for a while just enjoying each other’s lips.
Laurel started to look around and didn’t see Sara or Ava anywhere on the dance floor she got Alex’s attention who also started to look around and didn’t see the pair. They both turned back to the bar smiling they didn’t know where they were, but they weren’t going to go looking for them either. A few drinks later both Laurel and Alex were laughing and enjoying each other’s company when Sara and Ava emerged from out of nowhere and sat next to them. Lips swollen and grins on there faces, Alex looked between the two of them and just smiled while Laurel almost couldn’t stop laughing. Sara couldn’t help but ask.
“What are you laughing at?” Sara waved over to Leo to get his attention wanting a drink.
“You guys.” Laurel laughed pointing between Ava and Sara. “you look like a couple of teenagers who have been making out under the bleachers.” Laurel couldn’t stop laughing at her comment. Ava turned bright red and Sara just gave Laurel a death stare.
Ava up and leaned into Sara’s ear “I’ll be right back.” She kissed her on the cheek and walked towards the bathroom. Causing another round of laughter from Laurel and when she glanced back Sara was smacking her shoulder around Alex who was just laughing along with Laurel at this point.
Ava was on cloud nine washing her hands, she had managed to ask Sara on a proper date and pried her lips away from her so they could mingle a bit before they called it a night. When she looked up to check her hair in the mirror there were those green eyes again staring at her. Ava turned quickly to face Allison.
“What the hell Allison?” Ava didn’t know what to say other than that.
“So, this Sara girl?” Allison took a step forward and Ava shifted away from her. “Does she know about you?” Ava just glared at Allison trying to figure out what the hell she meant.
“What are you talking about?” Ava grunted
Allison took a step towards the bathroom stalls and grabbed onto one of the doors. “Like how Slamming doors trigger your Panic attacks.” She slammed the door loudly and Ava threw her hands over ears. Allison Banged the door three more times. “Or how you have nightmares and sometimes wake up screaming in the middle of the night.” She slams the door again.
“Stop it.” Is all Ava can get out her breath becoming harder to catch. She moved slowly to the bathroom wall she could feel her vision getting blurry and her body heating up.
“Oh Ava, you haven’t told your new girlfriend about your demons yet.” She slammed the door again. And that was all it took Ava had dropped down to a sitting position her knees to her chest gasping for air. Allison made her way over to her and got down to her level and looked her in the eyes. “You are damaged goods Ava. Always will be.” She laughed at her and stood up.
Ava couldn’t see anything her vision was blurry, but she did hear Allison’s voice, its hadn’t been the first time she told her she was damaged. She made sure she knew that she reminded her every chance she got after the first few panic attacks she had. But Ava didn’t tell anyone that, she couldn’t let people know that she stayed with Allison after the way she treated her. They would have thought Ava was spineless or weak, catching her with Lauren was the best thing that ever happened in her opinion. But Allison had effectively ruined Ava. She didn’t trust anyone anymore not since then only Hannah and Alex, she didn’t get close to people anymore and Allison knew exactly what to do to trigger her and now here she was in a bathroom having a panic attack right in front of Allison. Weak and damaged just like she liked her. She remembers the noise a loud thump but isn’t sure how long it was between hearing Allison telling her she is damaged and between her cries and another voice coming through.
Sara was worried at how long it was taking Ava it had been ten minutes almost since she had run to the restroom. So, she leaned in and told Alex she was going to check on her and Alex nodded. She walked over the door and when she opened it couldn’t believe what her eyes saw. There was Allison squatting down right in front of Ava who didn’t look good she was shaking and bright red and was having trouble breathing. As she crept forward, she could hear Allison’s words “damaged goods” and she realized what was happening Allision had caused this. And before she even thought about it, Sara has walked over and grabbed Allison by the waist and flipped her over her shoulder landing with a loud thud. Sara Pounced on the woman who had the wind knocked out of her on the ground and punched her right in the nose. Allison finally caught her breath and let out a scream and Sara was ready to punch again but before she could Alex had run in with Laurel trailing behind her and they grabbed Sara off the woman.
Alex pushed Sara towards Laurel and ran to Ava and squatted down. “Ava did you bring your pills?” But Ava didn’t respond her eyes were shut and she was to far gone. Sara pushed away from Laurel and got down in front of Ava. “She usually has pills she takes when she feels a panic attack coming on.” Alex rushed her words. Sara nodded she knew what to do she had been trained for these situations because she was after all an actual doctor not just a physical therapist.
“Ava.” Sara’s voice was quiet as she explained what she was going to do. “I’m going to take your hand in my hand okay.” She paused and picked up her hand. “Good now I’m going to put your hand over my heart. So, you can feel my heart beat okay.” She did as she said and still no response. “Ava, I need you to focus on my heartbeat can you feel my heartbeat.” She waited and again no response. “Ava I’m going to put my hand to your heartbeat okay.” Sara moved her hand and covered her heart with her hand. “I need you to breath and focus on my heartbeat.”
“I’m going to run and see if she left them in my car.” Alex said quickly as Sara nodded to her. Alex ran out of the bathroom. As she did Sara looked back and saw Laurel helping Allison up and she gave Laurel a look and Laurel Nodded at her and escorted the women out of the bathroom. It was just Ava and Sara now.
“Ava open your eyes Ava.” Sara waited for a response and finally Ava’s eyes opened meeting her piercing blue eyes. “Can you feel my heartbeat?” Ava looked at her hand on Sara’s chest and looked back up and nodded. “Okay I want to take some deep breathes okay I want you to match my heartbeat.” Ava nodded and tried to take a deep breath her eyes clenched closed. “Ava” her eyes opened again. “Try again, try to take a deep breath.” Ava took a deep inhale and was finally able to exhale. “Okay let’s keep doing that deep breath in and deep breath out. Alex went to see if your pills are in the car. She will be right back,” Ava nodded and kept following Sara’s instructions. Her breathing continued to settle when Alex came rushing back in with a pill bottle in one hand and a water in the other. And handed them to Sara, Ava who watched the exchange finally spoke.
“I’m okay.” Her voice low and muffled. She dropped her legs down to straighten them out as Sara and Alex adjusted so she could. “I don’t need it.” She motioned at the pills.
“Are you sure?” Alex said out of breath
“Yeah, I’m sure.” Ava replied. She went to stand up Sara and Alex both grabbed an arm to help her into the standing position. She looked around and noticed Allison was gone. “Where is she?”
“Probably on her way to the hospital.” Alex snorted
“What? Why?” Ava hadn’t seen what had happened she only heard a loud noise and a cry, but she could have sworn it was her own. “Alex what did you do?” She looked over to Alex, who gestured over to Sara.
“I didn’t do anything. She kicked her ass.” Alex said with a big smile as she leaned into Ava and whispered, “I like her a lot.” Ava looked over at Sara who didn’t seem sorry at all.
“Well you wouldn’t let me do it earlier.” She looked up to meet Ava’s eyes and she saw tears forming. “I heard what she said to you and I snapped.”
“Alex can you give us a second.” Ava said as she wiped at her eyes with her arm. Alex nodded and walked out. Ava turned to Sara. “I should explain some things if you heard what she said.” Sara was quick to throw her hands up.
“Ava, you don’t have to explain anything to me. Unless you want too. No person should ever be spoken to or treated that way.” She moved to stand in front of her so she could look her in the eyes when she spoke again. “We all have a past; we have all been through some shit and in the line of work we chose it leaves scars both physical and mental.” Ava looked down to her feet and finally spoke.
“What if I am damaged?” it came out in a whisper. Sara moved closer to Ava and lifter her chin to meet her eyes.
“I guess its good you asked a doctor out on a date, then right?” She laughed and Ava chuckled. Sara pulled Ava into a hug. The best hug Ava has ever had in her life, she melted into the hug and realized how tired she was.
“I think I should head home. These panic attacks tend to be exhausting.” Ava looked a little sad.
“I understand, I’m going to head out too I’m sure I’m going to need to ice my hand. And I’m sure I’m going to get a lecture from Laurel the whole way home.” Sara rolled her eyes and Ava flashed a smile. “Will you text me when you get home and let me know your okay?” Sara met Ava’s eyes again.
“If you want me too.”
“Ava, I want you to text me anytime you want to if you wake up in the middle of the night and just want to talk you can call me too.” Sara leaned up and placed peck on Ava’s cheek causing her to blush. Ava tilter her head forward trying to hide the blush but failed miserably. “I mean it. Text me when you get home. And whenever you want. You have a date to plan and I need to know all the details obviously.” She turned towards the door and opened it and escorted Ava back to the bar. Once they got there Ava leaned into Alex and spoke into her ear and Alex nodded and tapped the bar.
“Leo were gonna head out will you close out my tab. And put Laurel and Sara’s drinks on there too.” Alex turned and smiled at the ladies. “Its on me tonight.” Laurel and Sara both smiled back her and thanked her.
