Chapter 7: The Battle Of New York
A year had passed. Tony was relaxing. "Sir, we've got an intruder," Jarvis said.
"What? Who? How did they get in?" Tony asked as he felt the energy surge from his X-gene enveloping him, and his suit formed around him.
"It's not inside, sir, but outside, more specifically on the roof. Loki Odinson and Eric Selvig seem to have linked up the Hydra cube, the Tesseract your father found and gave to SHIELD, to the Arc Reactor," Jarvis replied.
"Shit," Tony said as he flew out of the window, only to see a blue beam shooting up into the sky, opening up a portal.
"Jarvis, have the streets cleared now," Tony commanded.
"Yes, sir. The army is blocking off the city," Jarvis replied.
"Good, and activate the Iron Legion. We're going to need the extra muscle," Tony ordered. Tony had created the Iron Legion, getting the idea from Hammer, who used stolen arc reactor tech to make the Hammer drones. He intended for it to be used in situations like this, though not exactly like this. Tony didn't expect an alien invasion; they were mainly meant to be used to retaliate against humans who hated his kind: mutants.
"Sir, I have a call from the director of SHIELD," Jarvis said.
"Tell him I'm busy cleaning up his mess," Tony replied as he flew, shooting Chitauri on the way. When he almost made it, he saw a giant Chitauri Leviathan coming towards him, opening its mouth, ready to swallow him. Tony's armored arm turned into a giant energy cannon and fired a beam, reducing the alien menace to nothing.
Eventually, Tony made it to the roof, where he saw Loki, who had Selvig and Agent Barton with him. Tony used one of the abilities of his armor, Decipher, which showed him everything about Clint: his genetic structure, height, weight, strengths, weaknesses, and that he had no powers. But what caught him was that all three of them were under mind control. Barton and Selvig were under Loki's control, but Loki was under the mind control of someone far off the planet. Tony could see lines along with the message "mind control," which linked the victims to their wrongdoer.
Tony then looked at the Tesseract and the machine making the portal, and he saw its weakness: the scepter Loki had, the stone in it, had a stone similar to the one the Tesseract contained. Tony rushed at Loki, avoiding a flying knife, and shot him, knocking him into a wall. Loki's eyes turned from blue to green, indicating his mind control was over.
"Jarvis, did you record that?" Tony asked.
"Yes, Sir," Jarvis replied.
"Good. We've got evidence that Loki's innocent. Have the Legions knock out Barton and Selvig; the force should free them from their mind-controlled state," Tony ordered.
"Got it, sir," Jarvis replied as two Legionnaires bashed the agent and the innocent scientist on the head, rendering them unconscious.
"Now, to end this invasion," Tony said. As the Tesseract was the source of power for the machine, he simply grabbed the scepter, jabbing it into the Tesseract, canceling each other out. The portal closed, and when that happened, Thor arrived.
"Hello, I am Thor, Son of Odin. I see you have defeated Loki and stopped the Tesseract. Why didn't you come to SHIELD to help earlier? You are better than the Captain they are trying to make me follow, although not as good as me, a god and the future king of Asgard," Thor said.
"I wasn't really told or called by Fury, probably because I rejected being an Avenger. So they took my ex-best friend, James Rhodes, who betrayed me for being a mutant and not making weapons for the military. He is the one they call War Machine. But anyway, I presume you are here for the one they call Loki. He is innocent; I have footage of him being mind-controlled by someone I don't know, but it's most likely the one who sent the Chitauri aliens. I believe Loki called them that. I can give you the footage," Tony said.
"I see; I will take the footage, but I'm here for Loki and the Tesseract," Thor said.
"I see. Do you know what the scepter does?" Tony asked.
"No, that was Loki's or given to him by the mad titan," Thor said.
"I see. If it's alien, you might as well take that as well. Humans can't be trusted with it," Tony said.
"I shall. Thank you for your help," Thor said, a bit disappointed and angry that he didn't get to be a hero like his father was by saving this world filled with puny mongrels and Jane. But oh well, he completed his mission. He waited as Tony handed him the scepter and video evidence proving Loki's innocence. After that, he handed the Tesseract, and Thor used its power to transport the scepter, the Tesseract, Loki, and himself to Asgard.
Tony sighed. "Well, that was something, wasn't it, Jarvis? Has the Legion taken out the remaining Chitauri?" Tony asked.
"Yes, sir," Jarvis replied.
"Good," Tony said.
"So what now, sir?" Jarvis asked.
"Well, I've always wanted to try Shawarma. Let's find a restaurant that's still standing. We'll eat, and then we can worry about cleaning up," Tony said.
Meanwhile, on a S.H.I.E.L.D Quinjet, the Avengers were making their way to New York to fight Loki when suddenly.
"Make your way to Stark Tower. The invasion's over; the mutant Stark took care of it. Try and get the scepter and Tesseract from him, if Thor hasn't taken it," Fury said.
"What? The mutant took care of the invasion?" Steve Rogers said.
"Yes, and I don't think it's a coincidence that the same day he was made CEO of his company and revealed as a mutant is the same time the Chitauri invade, and he manages to save the world. It's not a coincidence," Fury said.
"You're suggesting a mutant saved the world?" Natasha Romanov asked.
"Yes, but right now, let's focus on getting the Tesseract. We need to study it, plus we need a reason for the council to fund us," Nick Fury said.
"So are we getting paid?" Rhodey asked.
"We will have a pay raise," Fury replied.
"I'm in," Steve Rogers said.
"Same," the rest of the Avengers said.
"Okay, we will be there in a few," Fury said.
A while later, the Avengers arrived at Stark Tower.
"Mr. Stark," Steve said.
"You should come with us," Natasha added.
"We need to speak," Rogers continued.
"Yes, Mr. Stark, we need to talk," Rhodes said.
"Yeah, well, get in line," Tony retorted.
"You come with us now, or things are gonna get nasty," Rogers threatened.
"I don't want to hurt you. But I will," Rhodes added.
"Threaten me again. See what happens," Tony snapped.
"Stark, this is not a good time to test me,"
Rogers said.
"Oh, no. I didn't make a mistake. This is the exact right time to test you," Tony snipped.
"I'll ask nicely once, Mr. Stark. Get down on your knees," Romanov ordered.
"You're not qualified," Tony retorted.
"This won't end well," Rogers warned.
"we are not lookin' for a fight! Tony, you're coming with us," Rhodes demanded.
Tony suited up and looked at them.
"Get the hell off my tower; you aren't invited. If you're looking for the scepter and the cube, it's with Thor off-world. By the way, take your trash of an agent," Tony yelled, throwing a knocked-out Barton.
"You won't get away with this disrespect, mutie," Rhodey said.
"Come at me, then," Tony challenged as a Legionnaire flew and punched Rhodey into a wall.
"You guys are under arrest," Steve said as he went to attack Tony, but a blast hit him as well. Natasha was holding Clint and couldn't get involved.
"I'm sorry for my team, Mr. Stark; we will leave immediately," Bruce Banner said.
"Fine, get off of my property. And stay away. If you are found here again, you will be arrested. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a shawarma to eat," Tony said.
