Flashback/End

Lena came back with a gasp and needed time to recognize where she was at first. She saw Alex hovering over her, telling her calming words, grabbing her shoulders. She looked devastated, but Lena also realized the wetness on her own face. “Did it work?” was Lenas first question, feeling panic rising up in her chest.

She set up with Alex help looking at Kara frantically. But Kara still laid there without moving, the Black Mercy still melted with her chest.

She moved towards Kara and ran her hands above her arms carefully. “Kara come on. You need to fight it.”

Brainy was tapping in his pad with fast fingers, mumbling words. Lena shouted, tears threatening her eyes: “Brainy, why did you pulled me out that early?!”

Brainy shook his head, looking up and answered serious: “I didn’t. You came back without me inventing.”

Lena looked back to Karas face, slowly realizing, whispering: “She… she rejected me?” Alex feared that Lena would take it wrong and intervened immediately: “No Lena, it’s not…” but Brainy gasped: “Look!”

All eyes on Kara now, the Black Mercy slowly losing its life. The tentacles lost their strenght and it splat to the floor. Brainy was the one who caught it fast, before it could attack anyone else.

“It’s working.” Alex shouted: “Everyone! Bring me all sunlamps you’ll find!” She looked to Lena, happy tears are running down her cheeks: “You did it Lena. She will be fine. You saved her.”

Lena still stood there, without moving, just tried to breath in and out slowly to calm her racing heart. You saved her. Everything will be fine. Kara will wake up and everything will be fine again.

Agents came rushing in, placing every sunlap in front of Kara and started them.

Lena moved backwards, to let Brainy and Alex checking over Kara. Her vitals became better and better any minute which passed. She was so focused on Kara and didn’t realized how much time passed, until she felt Alex soft hand on her shoulder. “Hey.”

Lena looked at her with wide teary eyes, the shock of everything leaving her body after feeling Alex hand. Before a tear was able to leave her eyes, Alex pulled her in fast and hugged her tightly. Lena sobbed and grabbed on Alex body for support. Alex hold her, whispered: “everything will be ok, you did it.”

Lena was glad that they were alone now, Brainy and Nia headed out for an emergency.

“We… almost lost her, Alex. She… gave up.”

Alex sniffed in response, her hands wandering above Lenas back calmly, and she tried to answer with a strong but teary voice: “I know. But you gave her hope back.” She held Lena close until she became calmer.

Time passed and nothing changed. Kara was still sleeping.

Minutes became hours, as Alex and Lena sat one each side on Karas side holding her hands and waiting for her to come back.

It was already deep in the night, Lenas phone was alarming every few minutes, but she couldn’t care less. Her eyes were burning from the lack of sleep. From crying. From being afraid to blink. Alex sighed and asked in a calm voice: “Can I ask you something personal?” Lena nodded, her eyes never leaving Karas face.

Alex breathed out loudly: “Why did you leave?”

Lena looked up, furrowed her brows and cleared her throat. “Kara… haven’t told you?” Alex smiled painfully and shook her head: “She refused to speak about it. I guess it was to hard for her.”

Lena sighed, her heart aching by this memory. She closed her eyes and grabbed Karas hand tighter, never letting go of her.

Flashback to game night

The first time in years, Lena felt safe and home. It was game night again at Karas place and everyone had a good night with potstickers and Chinese food, a good amount of alcohol and good conversations and the most important thing: no emergencies which cut the evening short. Lena loved Karas place, it was welcoming, warm and comfortable. Whenever she visited her, she knew she was home. Where Kara was, was her home.

She was fighting her inner self for month now, telling Kara the truth about how she felt. Every hug, every unintentionally touch, every smile and the longing in their eyes. Everything meant the world to Lena.

Kara was her safe place, even though she feared, that her feelings could destroy everything they had, but she felt like she was lying to Kara, about not telling her how she really felt about their relationship.

The tension between them was unbearable on this day. Kara hugged her unnecessarily often and hold her hand. Caressed her palm with her thumb.

When everyone called it a night and said their goodbyes, Lena knew that this was the moment.

Everyone else was already gone, Lena helped Kara cleaning everything up. When they finished, they stood in front of each other, communicating through their eyes. Shy smiles on their faces. Lena felt her heart peaking up, played with her hands nervously. “I well… I guess it’s time for me to leave now.”

Kara shook her head fast, a light redness on her cheeks: “Yeah but you can stay here you know? Do you want to watch a movie with me?” Her eyes were shining hopefully. “Please?”

Lena smiled back and agreed: “Of course. You pick the movie? I’ll went to the bathroom.”

Kara enthusiastic: “Perfect, I'll prepare anything!”

Lena went to the bathroom, to calm herself down. Part of her wasn’t willing to end this moment between them, but she needed to.

When she came back, Kara was already on the sofa, with a huge blanket, waiting for her. As she spotted Lena, she raised the ceiling to let her slip beside her. Lena does and felt the radiating heat from Karas body. Kara was leaning on her side, snuggling closer and grabbed her hand. They looked at the TV in silence and Lena felt like they are an old married couple.

Her heartrate picked and Kara felt it too. She looked at Lena instantly worried and asked: “Are you alright? Your heartrate is really high.” Lena laughed shortly, of course she’s listening to her heart. She denied and looked into Karas baby blue eyes: “I need to tell you something important.”

Kara furrowed her brows, looking curious almost scared and waited for her to continue.

Lena took a deep breath, wringled herself free and stood up to went to the fridge, to grab a cold glass of water. Trying everything to calm her racing heart down. Kara also stood up and was behind her, placing a soft hand on her shoulder: “Tell me what’s bothering you?” her voice was soft and when Lena turned around, they were mere centimeters apart.

Her heart hammering in her chest, like she just finished the National City marathon. Kara didn’t forced her and waited, smiling but worried.

Lenas eyes went down to Karas lips, and back to her eyes and she decided to go for it.

When their lips found each other, it was exactly like Lena expected it. The kiss was soft , caring and with so much love. Kara placed her hands on her waist and pulled her impossibly closer, while whimpering in her mouth. Lena placed her hands on Karas chest felt her erratic heartbeat and never wanted to let go of her ever again.

When Lena pulled back again, eyes still closed, they stood there forehead to forehead. Lena whispered: “I.. I’m in love with you Kara.”

A sob broke free from Karas throat and she whimpered: “Lena.”

Lena intervened: “No Kara, it’s alright. I understand that you don’t feel the same about me. I just needed to let you know.” Kara opened her eyes, she looked so desperate: “Lena, I love you too. I loved you from the first time I saw you. You… Rao Lena, you’re the most precious person in this world. In the whole universe!”

Lena felt like a knot in her stomach just exploded, she felt relieved, but she knew there was a catch. She tried to be strong and brushed the tears from Karas face softly: “And yet?”

Kara hugged her tightly, her face in the crock of Lenas neck, breathing out shaking. “We can’t be together. I am Supergirl and you would be in more danger than you already are. I can’t… I have to decide. This is my life of being a Superhero. It’s manifested to be alone.”

Lena blinked, holding Kara closer, while she was crying. It felt like her breath hatched in her throat, unable to breath again.

Kara mumbled again and again: “I’m sorry. I love you. You’re my home.” And started kissing her neck with soft lips. Lena closed her eyes and pulled Kara back, both eying each other, until Lena kissed Kara hungrily.

They spent the night kissing, hugging, crying, apologizing, speeches of love languages until Lena felt her heart ripped out the next morning.

And she knew it was be the best to leave. It would be better for both of them. To protect their hearts.

Flashback end

 “That’s it.”

Alex looked at her, tears brimming her eyes, her mouth wide open. “Holy shit. I’m sorry Lena. I didn’t expected this.”

Lena shrugged her shoulders, while continue to look into Karas unmoving face. “Yeah I… didn’t expected that my absence would effect her that much.” Her voice is quiet and dejected.

“She really gave up. I’ve never seen her that way before. At first I thought you had a fight but later I realized, that she really was heartbroken and empty. We missed you Lena.”

Lena looked to Alex and smiled weak. “It wasn’t easy for me either, don’t get me wrong. I brought an castle in Ireland and entrenched myself. Jess and Eve were constantly by my side, Andrea and Sam visited of course, but I never felt like home again. Part of my family was missing.”

Alex ran a tear from her eye: “I’m sorry Lena. Will you stay now?”

Lena still focused on Kara, smiling softly: “I will. But maybe I’ll show Kara my isle for holidays. Just the two of us. To process everything.”

Before Alex could answer, Kara squeezed their hands tighter. She woke up with a deep gasp and sat up, looking furiously around herself. Alex stood up immediately and ran her hands above Karas shoulders: “Kara!! Shh shhh stay calm, everything is fine, you’re back. You’re fine.” She hugged her tightly and tried soothing her. “Oh God you’re back…” whispered Alex.

Kara and Lena locked eyes, over Alex’s shoulder and Lena recognized her swimming blue eyes. The tears were already there and Lena knew in how much pain Kara was. Leaving everyone behind. Everyone she just got back. But Lena is there and wouldn’t go anywhere. Not ever again.

Alex let go of her , sniffed and excused herself, so both of them were alone. Kara looked so vulnerable and fragile that Lena feared she might hurt her, as Kara reached out for her. Lena sat down on Karas bed, pulled her closer and let Kara mourning her loss. She laid both down and placed Kara on her chest, caressing her back and took care of her. While whispered loving words and held her close.

“Listen to my heartbeat darling. Everything will be alright again.”

She kissed Karas temple softly: “I won’t leave you again, I promise you. We’re in this together.”

Some time later, Karas sobbing ended slowly. She looked up and forced a smile. Lena smiled back softly and whispered: “Thank you for being here. I love you Kara Zor-El.”  and both leaned in for a kiss.

The kiss sealed their promise, of never leaving each other and loving each other until the end of time.
