Nick Fury stared in disbelief at the audacity of Steve Rogers. The man thinks that just because he's Captain, he has full authority over the Avengers. Even Stark, who was a partial owner of the brand name, had more power than Rogers. Not that Fury would tell Stark that; it would get to his ego. But in any case, Mr. Rogers was here complaining to Fury, who had taken back control over the Avengers Initiative under the Accords Council, stating that he was no longer the leader of the team, and that Captain Marvel was.
"Tell me, Rogers, since when were you anything but a field leader?" Fury said.
"I am Captain America, sir. I believe I am the full leader of the Avengers Initiative," Steve replied.
Fury could feel his blood boiling. "Well, Mr. Rogers, you are wrong. I am the owner and have full authority over the Avengers Initiative. Do you really think the world will accept you, who knows nothing about the world and missed years in the ice, as the leader? Let's not forget that most of your ideals are frowned upon, and while there are some that a good majority of your old-fashioned ideals, like being a technophobe, is outdated."
"But sir, with all due respect, I was the only one to take charge when you left," Rogers said.
"Yes, and when I returned, I saw that you wanted to add a Hydra terrorist to the Avengers after everything that happened with S.H.I.E.L.D. After your girlfriend Peggy Carter added Zola as head scientist, allowing Hydra to be reborn in S.H.I.E.L.D., you want to do the same by adding Wanda Maximoff, a woman who sees no harm in using her powers and is shown to berate people for taking it easy. She is not Avengers material, and I will not stand for it," Nick said.
"Sir, she is a kid," Rogers said.
"A 27-year-old is not a kid, and the fact that she doesn't understand her powers or sees the harm is a danger to everyone. Also, she is not the only one in the running," Fury said.
"And what if I still don't agree?" Steve said.
Fury smiled. "You aren't the only option we have as Captain. S.H.I.E.L.D. only had you in the Avengers for the power your name held, but now, after Civil War, after you defied the will of 117 countries, well, 150 now, your name is useless, especially after Tony Stark exposed you for hiding his parents and countless other deaths at the hands of the Winter Soldier."
Steve could not believe his ears. "How dare you say that."
"Well, I don't think I am saying anything wrong," Fury said.
"Also, Captain Marvel is more suited as a leader than you. She has a better public image, is liked, and is a better leader than you."
Steve wanted to smash his shield into Fury's face. "What is so great about her?"
Fury smiled. "Oh, a lot. Firstly, she is a good leader. She is a hero, not a vigilante. She doesn't hide deaths of teammates' family members, expecting them to pay to find their parents' killer. She is not in support of a terrorist. She is a better fighter, has more experience in the world than you, and has been around since the '90s."
"You don't know what you're talking about," Rogers said.
Fury glared at him. "Don't make me bring in the other options, like Black Panther, who is the king of Wakanda. He is also a better leader, a king who has the support of his country and has a better image than you. Thor, who has the backing of Asgard, has a better public image than you and more experience."
Steve stared in disbelief at Fury. "That's impossible; my image is better than his, and I have more experience. You don't know what you're talking about."
"Really? Tell that to the media that has made you the face of everything that went wrong in Civil War. Let's not forget that only Natasha Romanoff, Wanda Maximoff, Sam Wilson, Clint Barton want you in charge, and that's just because of their ego and hatred for Stark, who can't accept that he was right," Fury said.
"How dare you; more people want me. I am the great Captain America; I ended the Second World War single-handedly," Steve said. At this, Fury rudely burst out in laughter.
"You ended the Second World War? Oh god, please, Rogers, you should be a jester than a hero. First of all, it was Howard Stark's atomic bomb that ended the World War. Tell me what you did," Fury asked in a mixture of laughing and a condescending tone.
"I defeated Red Skull..."
"The Tesseract defeated Red Skull; you did nothing but allow your best friend to almost die falling off a train," Fury said.
"I led the Howling Commandos and took down Hydra bases," Rogers said.
"You were a figurehead. You were never the brains of an operation; it was James Barnes who was. You were just muscle in that war," Fury said condescendingly.
"What? No, that's not true," Rogers said.
"It's 100 percent true. You're forgetting the battle of New York; I heard your plans, and they were basic. We are lucky the Chitauri possessed no degree of intelligence, or your plan would have been shot down. Tell me how many times you have been in a battle, and your plan was to shoot first and ask questions later," Fury said.
Rogers was about to talk back but stopped when he realized he did not have a comeback.
"Let's talk about your battle IQ, which you love to praise. I watched your battle between Stark and you, and while I admit you are better than Stark in hand-to-hand combat, the man was fighting both you and Barnes and was winning. Not even that; his AI scanned you for a few seconds and countered your entire fighting style. You won because he was focused on avenging his parents and killing Barnes, not you, so you caught him off guard," Fury said.
"I did beat Stark," Rogers said.
"Stark is an inventor; his best weapon is his brain. His suit is the weapon, not his muscles. In a straight-up fist fight, Stark has no chance against you, but that was not the case; he was outmatching you," Fury said.
"That doesn't matter; I was right; he was wrong," Rogers said.
"Really? And the UN is wrong, 117 countries are wrong, the world is wrong, and every single person in the world is wrong. Oh wait, I forgot; I am the only right one in the world, and I have the backing of the UN," Fury said.
"Fury, I am Captain America; I deserve to lead the team," Rogers said.
"Why? Because you're patriotic and you have a big-ass shield and a good physique? I mean, let's face it; you are not a good leader nor a tactician. I have seen the Battle of New York, Sokovia, and Civil War. If you were in charge, you would have died along with many Avengers if you had a say. You don't understand the concept of tactics or a plan that involves something that is not punching and hitting things until they die. Don't forget you almost lost to Stark's team, who had no experience working together and only got away because Romanoff betrayed Stark. That itself should show how worthless you are as a leader and tactician," Fury said.
Rogers could not believe what he was hearing.
"I would have thought someone who was so patriotic like you would have known not to defy the will of the majority and would have accepted the Accords," Fury said.
Rogers was furious. "I will not follow those Accords."
"Good, because we never wanted you," Fury said.
"I am Captain America, and my place is leading the Avengers..."
"Just leave, Rogers; your plea to be the leader again is denied," Fury said.
"You can't do that. I am Captain America," Rogers shouted. Suddenly, Iron Man suits came down and grabbed Rogers, escorting him to the Rogue Avengers' room, throwing him in there and leaving.
Rogers was angry and started trashing the room. He hated Stark, and he hated Fury. How dare they tell him no. How dare they say his ideals were not supported. He would show them how much Captain America was worth.
The end.
