It was the 1930s, Historia (then called Krista) a young girl, was promised to a man, Erwin his name. It was an arranged marriage, something normal back then and like many others she wasn’t happy, since her heart belonged to the blacksmith’s daughter Ymir.
She also only had eyes for her, Ymir loved her only and Krista loved only her, it was destined to be,….or so they thought. Unfortunately, she was just a simple girl, that didn’t get to decide about her life. Every night she cried, hoping for no soul to hear.
Not for nothing, the man she had to marry was way older, in addition people were talking bad about him. He was known for his violent and narcissistic behavior, and for his cold and cruel personality. His first wife (Marie) even committed suicide, out of fear, of not being able to separate from him. He quite literally drove her crazy.
Krista was really frightened by his terrifying reputation, especially since she was not even able to get to know him, nor was she in love with him. They would get straight to marrying, meaning for her to never be free again.
One night, her and Ymir, her true love, snuck out to spend their little time left together. When they were looking at the stars, sobbing and laughing, keeping each other company, Ymir mumbled something. Krista asked for her to repeat it, due to her not understanding. She proposed that they should just run away, as she wanted only her, their happiness, their love.
But where would they go, Krista asked. In this world there was no place for them to love each other. Whether here or somewhere else, two women together?? Ridiculous!! They talked and discussed, Krista wanted to stay, Ymir wanted to go. They could meet each other secretly, she said. But Ymir was determined.
“If I can’t have you, I’d rather die”, she whispered. “Rather die together, than suffer alone”, was her response. “If I see you with someone else, I’d kill myself for failing to protect you” was Krista’s last straw. Her eyes widened in shock, as she realized that Ymir was genuinely speaking, leaving Krista speechless. In the end, she had no other choice but to concur, crying out of fear of losing her reason in this world.
Ymir left short after, ready to pack her things while Krista stayed there, lying under the stars. As she spotted a shooting star in the sky, her eyes couldn’t help but tear up. “Of all the things we could have feared in this world, we were forced to pick love”, she thought to herself as she quietly whispered her wish to the night sky. (Yes, this is a reference)
The next day, she secretly packed her things and only told her brother Armin, whom she trusted most as he already knew about Ymir. He cried, saying how happy he was for them with a smile on his face.
Once she was finished, she sprinted to their meeting place, a linden tree where Ymir was already waiting for her. As soon as they were ready to leave, they heard voices. Her father (Rod Reiss) and Erwin noticeably upset, searching for the girl.
As they got closer and closer the couple panicked, starting to run for their lives. They ran and ran, only stopping as the next morning dawned. They found themselves in a place, empty of people but full of past souls, protecting them from the shadows.
Looking at their new future, a future of them trusting,… loving, at their better future, they fell into each other’s arms, hugging and sobbing, like there was no tomorrow.
They knew it wasn’t the end but for now they are free, from everything except themselves.
This was their happy ending.
