I Guess Thats Just The Way Things Go

Pearl was furious that day she found the two of them at the Kindergarten.

“I never asked to be made!” Amethyst's voice cracked, complimenting the crack of her whip. Pearl will always remember the tears that poured out of her eyes. How badly she wanted to run over to her and comfort her and wipe her tears away.

Furious is different from worried, right?

She weakly propped herself up, and Steven ran in front of them. It was a mumble of words. For the first time, Pearl wasn't paying attention to it. All she saw was Amethyst, bruised and cut, hurt.

It was her fault.

Cracks came from behind her. One of the legs of the injector gave out, sliding to the left and unbalancing the huge structure. It hummed as it toppled, swaying a bit before-

Pearl snapped back to reality when there was a grunt, and a pink bubble surrounded them. Everything happened so fast. Creaking and whirring came above them-

The injector.

A gasp of air left her as she noticed Amethyst, still outside the bubble, stepping out of reach for Steven's bubble.

“Amethyst! Amethyst!” Steven shouted, pounding on his bubble with clenched fists as the small purple gem struggled to stand upright.

The injector collapsed, falling as bolts and rocks flew everywhere. Amethyst stepped away. She glanced at Pearl and Steven before looking at the injector and-

It landed on them.

It landed on her.

Pearl blinked the tears out of her eyes as she held her mouth with two trembling hands. The bubble holding them popped. Steven shouted and ran. She wanted to reach out to him, to hold him and cry together.

Amethyst is tough. She's strong. So strong. She's fine. She's probably just poofed. It's okay. She's okay.

Pearl got up and lowered her hands, following Steven as he dug frantically in the rubble. Pearl saw his eyes glistening as he whimpered, looking through the debris.

A shimmer of purple caught her eye, but that couldn't be right. It was smaller than the Amethyst's gem. No, it couldn't have been her. Probably just some tinted glass.

Steven gasped and scooped up a pile of dirt. And there, Amethyst's gem lay in dirt and debris in the middle of his hands. Cracked into pieces,

It's been a blur ever since that moment she saw her.

The beautiful purple shards that once were whole.

“P-Pearl? She’s going to be alright, right?... She’s been cracked before and-and-”

Steven.

Oh, Steven.

Pearl held her shaking hands to her mouth. She bent down to Steven's level and scooped the pieces from his small, trembling hands. She blinked at him and then back down. A turquoise bubble surrounded the pieces, and she gave it to Steven.

“W-We have to head back now,” she states, clearly in some sort of daze.

“Pearl? She's going to be okay, right?... Pearl?” Steven followed behind her as they walked to the warp pad. Pearl carried some limp with her after the fight with Amethyst.

She was silent.

The warp glittered and whistled as they made it back to the temple. They'll fix this. They'll find a way.  They always do.

Garnet was home that day, waiting for them to return.

She would have never thought this was the possibility that this world would go to.

Pearl's head hung low as she stepped off the warp and to the Temple door, opening her room and closing it before the others could follow her.
