Chapter 4
maria hill feels like she's been played.
her birthday is in two days. since she will be turning 18 she won't have to sit in the daycare for half her day and she will finally get clearance to go places on her own. hell she might even be able to get a job somewhere before training starts in the spring.
those were her hopes, until she was told by her brother she would be babysitting. again. and who would she be babysitting... the little blonde devil who tried to pull her hair out and bite her when she was taking her back to her mother.
"maria, come on it's not that bad."
"that kid hates me. i think i have a scar from her clawing at me."
her brother sighed, "you don't really have a choice, fury assigned you to her until training starts."
"that's two whole months, training starts in april!why can't her mom do this? do you know why she was in handcuffs?"
"all fury told me is her mom will be busy during the day and you need to be there to take care of her. he said you can drop her off in the daycare as long as you take her out once or twice a day for food and fresh air or whatever."
"still! this isn't fair, i just got off babysitting and now they want me to babysit again for a devil child."
"she can't be that bad."
she was that bad..
the first day maria met with natasha and yelena, the little blonde seemed excited, almost happy. but as natasha kissed her daughter farewell and went to leave with barney barton the girl screamed and cried and the mother, natasha turned right back around gathering the girl in her arms.
"мне пора идти, любовь моя, я скоро вернусь, иди, повеселись для меня." natasha whispered
"mama don't leave me."
"i'm not leaving, leaving implies i won't come back. and i will. ill be back before you know it. be a good girl for miss hill." natasha set her down and gave her a gentle push towards maria.
yelena trudged along beside maria. the women had given up trying to speak to the girl. as they passed the canteen maria saw the girls lingering glance.
"have you eaten today."
yelena crossed her arms and made a grumpy face at maria. maria decided that probably meant no. she turned and pulled yelena with her so they could get in line for breakfast.
"they have waffles or pancakes. what would you like?"
yelena didn't respond, maria got her waffles. thankfully maria guessed correctly and yelena ate the whole plate of food (which was drowned in syrup).
once they were done maria was set to go to the daycare. yelena was set on not going to the daycare. maria took her to the daycare anyways.
maria signed the grumpy girl in, making small talk with the daycare employee who greeted yelena kindly.
yelena refused to go in the room. maria inwardly groaned.
"yelena please, it's only for a little bit, then we can go get lunch and head to the park if you want." the girl perked up at that and slowly trudged in.
she then stopped moving and maria bit back a sigh, "when will you be back?"
"three hours."
"will i get to see mama?"
"not until a little after. go play, i'll see you soon."
maria waited for yelena to walk all the way into the room before turning and leaving. she left the base to get herself a coffee before heading to the gym. halfway through her workout she got a call.
"maria? it's clint, your kid keeps crying. please come get her?"
maria but back a groan, how the hell is she going to last two months of this.
"yeah i'll be there soon, why is she crying ?"
there was a shriek over the phone followed by more cries , "i don't know, she hasn't stopped since you left."
maria sighed out loud this time, "okay, i'll be ten minutes at most."
the girl was still crying when maria got there.
"i want my mom."
maria picked up a pen to start signing the girl out, "she's busy right now so i'm looking after you, would you like to do anything before lunch."
"i want my mama, now!"
maria pinched the bridge of her nose, "your mom is busy yelena."
"call her!"
maria sighed, "you know what i think i will." now maria didn't have natasha phone number but she did have clint there and clint had his brothers number who was probably with natasha.
"clint please call your brother."
he typed on his phone before it started ringing and then handed it to maria.
"what. you know i'm busy."
"it's maria, is there a certain imprisoned mother i can speak to, her daughter is mildly upset."
barney groaned, "the mothers upset to, she's mid assessment right now so i can pull her, why don't you come up to my office with the kid, i can't put romanova through the second assessment after today anyways."
maria, albeit being very confused at what barney was talking about, was overjoyed at the thought of getting rid of a day of babysitting.

the second yelena could see her mother she was sprinting towards her, natasha was still cuffed but made quick work of picking yelena put and giving her a hug. maria expected her not to let go
over her daughter but she shockingly set her down. maria also had expected her to struggle as she rolled the sleeves of yelena's shield shirt up to check her arms. she then checked the girls stomach and back.
whatever natasha was looking for she didn't find and she quickly fixed the girls clothes again. she did take note of the dried salt crystals that looked to have run down yelena's face.
"when did she cry?"
"clint said at the daycare when i left."
"did she bother you?"
maria was confused at the question and lied immediately.
"no she was fine, i wasn't even with her that long, we only made it half the day."
natasha bowed her head slightly, "i thank you for not taking your aggression out on her.
maria's eyes widened, "i wouldn't touch her, you don't have to worry about that."
even though natasha was several feet away from her, the threat ran deep, "when you do, i will know, and i will kill you so slowly you will beg for a bullet in your brain." natasha face was void of all emotion and yelena didnt bat an eye at her mothers words.
maria blinked, “i have no intentions of harming yelena.”
“for your sake i hope not.”
