Holidays - Matt Murdock

Sometimes work was an escape for you. Especially since you had two of the best bosses in the world. The money may not always be the best, but you could rely on your bosses for anything. Foggy was the sweetest sunshine you’d ever met and while Matt was a little more quiet, he was protective as hell and incredibly kind to you.

The problem was that the holidays didn’t agree with you. So for the weeks leading up to Christmas, you purposely slowed down on the amount of work you’d get done so you had an excuse to work on Christmas day. You may not get paid for it, but it was something to do to fill your anxious and tired mind.

It helped that one of your bosses didn’t even celebrate Christmas, since he was Jewish. It didn’t help that he was taking the Chanukah days off to spend with his family. You didn’t know what Matt did for the holidays, though, since he didn’t talk much about his personal life. You knew he’d been invited to Foggy’s celebrations with his family, at least for one day, but he wasn’t Jewish himself. That much you knew.

You were just thankful you’d been entrusted with keys to the office, for days when Matt and/or Foggy were running late in the mornings. They didn’t need to know that you planned to spend the winter holidays holed up at your desk and doing every little task you could think of.

“What are you doing here?” Matt asked, coming into the office and causing you to nearly jump out of your skin. You dropped a pile of papers you’d been sorting.

“I could ask you the same thing.” You replied, fumbling to clean up the papers you’d dropped.

Matt made a soft noise, like a half chuckle, as he put his briefcase to the side of the door.

“Christmas isn’t my favorite.” He told you, though he didn’t elaborate.

“Same.” You sighed.

Matt didn’t say anything for a long moment and you nearly forgot he was there in the chilled office. You continued to parse through the papers in front of you, sorting them into their proper places.

“When I was a kid, my dad usually had a boxing match on Christmas. Kind of a special fight to bring in more fans and money.” Matt started and you looked up from what you were doing, giving him your full attention. “Anyway, he’d come home pretty bloodied. Sometimes victorious, sometimes not. But we’d always have a quiet Christmas dinner between us and I’d open my gifts while he held a bag of frozen vegetables to his face.”

You chuckled a little, unsure what he was getting at.

“Things haven’t been the same since then.” Matt admitted. “So my point is, I understand that the holidays aren’t the best for some people. And you don’t have to deal with it alone.”

“Thanks, Matt.” You smiled lightly, feeling incredibly blessed.

For the next hour or so, you and Matt swapped stories, happy memories the two of you had. Some of them were of past holidays, some were just funny memories in general. By the time you decided to finish for the day, you felt a weight lifted off your shoulders and much better about spending the holidays without family.
