Marriage

“Morninggg” came Sirius’s unwarranted cherry morning voice as he entered the drawing room.

“What’s up with you? Someone get lucky last night or something?” Regulus murmured in annoyance.

“Regulus Black! How dare you! We are Lords how could you speak of that?”

Regulus simply looked at him, knowing full well, his brother had never kept something to himself for more than an hour, one way or another he knew Sirius would answer.

“Alright alright, no it’s nothing like that I swear! Marlene’s coming to stay! I just received the telegram, the boat from America came in this morning!”

“This morning? And she’s coming straight here? Won’t her parents want to see her, she’s been traveling for what? 8 months?”

Sirius looked at him like he had just purposed the worst thing on earth “Yes! Exactly! 8 months Reggie! I haven’t seen my best friend in 8 months! Her parents can wait a few days.”

Regulus scoffed “Ok Sirius, either way I am glad she’s coming she’s quiet a tolerable person I must admit. Oh and It would be great if she’s still here when that Lawyer bloke shows up, one more person I can use to avoid talking to him.”

“Reggie..You’re going to have to speak to him. Andy’s right you know that…one day, maybe not for a while but one day he is going to have the choice whether we get to stay here or not, it wouldn’t hurt to make a good first impression.”

“We’ve been kicked out of our home before Sirius and look at us we survived” Regulus snapped.

Sirius suddenly looked tired “Barely” he murmured. They were silent for a moment before Sirius seemed to physically shake the thoughts out of his mind. “But you know all too well that this is different, we don’t have another backup Reggie, we don’t have an inheritance.”

Regulus didn’t answer, there was nothing to say. Of course he knew all of that, didn’t mean he was going to suck up to some Lawyer from the city, who quite frankly has no business even being in an estate let alone owning one.

“You know what, there is one solution to this little problem of ours, which I am honestly shocked hasn’t came up already” Sirius started.

“Get rid of him?” Regulus laughed.

“No, no that was not my thought, I was thinking more along the lines of marriage.” Sirius said with a straight face.

Now that, that gave Regulus a real laugh. “Marriage?! You cant be serious! You? Sirius? Sirius Black the man who despite many advances has turned down every suitor, because in his words they were ‘Just not all that.’ That Sirius? Is going to have an arranged marriage?” Regulus was legitimately shocked.

“Oh come off it Regulus. No of course bloody not! That would never work! No, I was thinking you.”

And if Regulus had been shocked before, he was nothing short of floored at that moment. “Me?” he wheezed through a laugh.
“Me marry him?! Now Sirius I can’t believe I am saying this to a man who thought when he was 12 that if he just had a big enough run up and an umbrella he could fly, but this, this right here may be the most stupidest idea you have ever had.”
“I swear to you that really did work for a second, I swear I flew!” Sirius retaliated.
“But I know, I didn’t ever really think you’d agree, I know that. I guess you and me really are similar in that sense.”

“That sense being?” Regulus asked wearily.

“We’re awfully picky us Black brothers” he smiled.

And despite his best efforts, Regulus felt himself return it.

“But don’t act like it wouldn’t solve all the problems, you and him being married, then you would own the estate just as much.” Sirius said with a sense of wishing.

“Yes but I would also have to be married to the bloke, and that now that is just not an option.” Regulus said with a small half smile.
