Chapter 2

Walking down the street towards Jackie’s preschool was also one of Matt’s favourite moments. It had a domestic feel to it; just him, Jackie and of course Foggy going through their seemingly daily ritual. Speaking of Foggy.

Foggy, multitasker extraordinaire, was balancing the other two coffees in one hand, while having Jackie on his hip (cause a 4 year old can only walk that fast and it’s easier this way to keep track of said 4 year old) and he was listening too Jackie’s dramatic retelling of how today she decided to take out her earplugs.

Matt smiled at this. Foggy was really good with Jackie and kids in general, Matt guessed he had to be, anyone would if you had about an army of younger cousins that you had to regularly babysit. The Nelsons were a rather large family that had practically adopted Matt and by extension Jackie as well. Jackie also saw Anna and Ed (Foggy’s parents) as her grandparents, so it just solidified the fact that the two Murdocks were honorary Nelsons as far as anyone was concerned.

Matt’s focus shifted to the atmosphere around them. He could hear people around them, other parents taking their children to school and then making their way to work or where ever they were going.

Matt also smelt the sweet smell of the spring air. It’s cool and clean, well as clean as New York air can be. Even as the three of them were walking towards Jackie’s preschool, Matt could feel the change of seasons setting in fully.

Spring has always been one of Matts favourite seasons, well except for the large amount of pollen that was always in the air that would irritate his’ and Jackie’s senses.

For Matt, spring meant new beginnings and Ester, sure Christmas was great and all, but Ester was more enjoyable for Matt. Ester was one of the less visual holidays, so Matt got to enjoy it more.

Dragging himself out of his musing, Matt realised that they were now in front of the preschool building.

Walking in, Matt could hear children saying goodbye to their parents and hello to their friends. He could hear some of the teachers in the faculty lounge talking about what ever teachers talked about.

Rounding a corner they came to a stop in front of Jackie’s classroom. Foggy placed her down onto the floor and Matt handed her, her bag. Matt knelt down in front of Jackie and placed a kiss on her forehead. The usual goodbyes were exchanged along with a hug from Matt and Foggy, and Matt made sure that Jackie had her earplugs just in case she needed them.

All in all was a start to a good day, Matt mused as he and Foggy (who out of habit took Matt by the elbow to lead him, even though it wasn’t really necessary) walked out of the building and were now on their way to the office.

Nearing the office of Nelson & Murdock, Matt could hear Karen rummaging around in one of the file cabinets. He could also hear her muttering about how they needed a new organisation system.

“Morning Karen,” Matt said as he and Foggy came through the door.

“Morning,” Karen hummed. “You two want me to start the coffee?”

Matt grimaced, but luckily Foggy swooped in, “No thanks, not today Karen. I actually, in all my greatness, bought us three coffee this morning.”

“In all your greatness?” Matt snorted, “Careful, Foggy. We don’t want you getting all egotistical on us.”

Foggy replied to this with an over exaggerated scoff and said, “Me, egotistical? Never.”

Foggy then handed Karen the, still surprisingly warm, coffee and she thanked him.

It’s a week before they had to go to court with their most recent case, and Matt was trying his best to focus on the task at hand. There was still a mountain of paperwork to go through and later he a Foggy had a meeting with another client.

But unfortunately for him, his thoughts kept wondering off. Particularly they wondered towards his vigilante night time activities.

There was a new gang that had popped up and they were trying to cement themselves into Hell’s Kitchen. Nothing that Matt wasn’t used to already, but something to him felt a little off about it all. Like most of the gangs in the area, they were in the business of dealing weapons and drugs, but this gang was different.

The weapons, guns, that they sold were unlike anything Matt had ever seen (Ha!). They were high tech, so either military or alien, maybe both. His shoulder was almost blasted off with a laser the other night, when one of the gang members took a shot at him.

That brought up the question of how the fuck a seemingly new gang got their hands on high tech laser weapons?

That was what Matt couldn’t figure out. The logical answer was that, they had either stolen them or they had bought them from either another gang or some unknown weapons manufacturer that got their hands on alien/military tech. Matt had tried to then find where they got the weapons from and then cut the problem off at the source, but so far he was unsuccessful.

“I know that look,” Foggy’s voice brought Matt out of his pondering,“It’s your ‘There’s something bothering me, but I’m not gonna say anything and be cranky the rest of the day’ look.”

Matt glared in Foggy’s general direction and with a huff said, “I’m not cranky and nothing’s bothering me.”

Foggy gave an amused snort, “Yeah, and I’m the queen of England.”

“Then it’s an honour to meet you, your majesty,” Matt resorted sassily, to which Foggy arched an eyebrow.

“Matt, I’ve been friends with you for long enough to know when something’s bothering you. So, spit it out.”

Matt remained silent, but after a minute of Foggy just staring at him he gave up and said, “It’s nothing, just a new gang causing trouble.”

“And since when does Daredevil let gangs get under his skin?” Foggy scoffed, “Do you need me to take Jackie for the night so you can go beat up someone guys in your devil fetish wear?”

“Okay, firstly it’s not fetish wear, it’s body armour,” Matt grumbled and Foggy rolled his eyes, “and secondly, they haven’t gotten under my skin, I’m just for now going to keep my ear too the ground and act from their.”

Foggy hummed unconvinced, but accepted his answer and turned his attention back towards the folder in front of him.
