Jubilee was familiar with people leaving. The first time someone close to her had left she wasn't even old enough to realize it. Her parents, whoever they were, left shortly after she was born. She spent the next thirteen years in foster care, bouncing between various sets of foster homes and guardians.
Then one day she woke up and started shooting brightly colored blasts out of her hands. After that Jubilee was thrust into what had seemed like a completely different world full of super-powered mutants, robots, time traveler's and just about every other crazy thing in between.
Ever since then she had been a part of the X-Men. This led to Jubilee experiencing many different losses due to the dangerous nature of some of the missions they carried out.
Just days after meeting the X-Men they lost one of their members. Morph was left for dead after the group was ambushed by sentinels when they were retreating from the mutant control center. Then months later he appeared again and was working with Mr. Sinister to get revenge on them for leaving him behind.
A while after that Jean was possessed by a cosmic being, became Phoenix and disappeared into space to save the world from being destroyed. They had all thought they would never see her again but she still came back to them after some time.
The most recent harsh loss the team had to face was with its founder, Professor Xavier. He was gone and he wasn't going to come back. It had taken her a long time to accept that. Unlike the other times there wasn't going to be some big reveal later on that revealed they were still alive and were coming back.
Reading through his will and seeing what he had planned for when he was gone had been like the final nail being hammered down. It just drove the fact that he was gone through even harder.
Now, they were dealing with the aftermath of everything that took place during Magnetos trial at the U.N. Magneto wasn't charged with anything and the police did manage to arrest some of the Friends of Humanity jerks but Storm had lost her powers.
Beast said the effects of the bullet appeared to be permanent. Soon after, Storm had left, leaving only a note behind about why she was gone. Hours earlier Jean had gathered everyone in the living room to read the note Storm had left for them.
Now Jubilee found herself on the roof of the mansion watching the dark clouds drift through the sky above her. It reminded her of when she had first come here. Storm had been the one to bring her out here and explain what the X-Men were and how they could help her. It felt like that had happened ages ago.
The dark clouds swirling above her in the sky were like the frightening thoughts that filled her head.
What if they never found a way to reverse the effects of the bullet?
What if more people were hit with special bullets and lost their powers too?
How long was Storm going to be gone for?
What if she never came back?
The thought of Storm leaving by her own choice and never coming back was the scariest. It was hard enough when someone died and was gone forever because of it. But knowing someone you care about is out there and that they just don't want to see you can hurt even more.
Jubilee was familiar with people leaving because it has happened so many times in the past. Even if she was familiar with it, that still doesn't make it any easier. The X-Men are the best family she's ever had. Why did it have to keep breaking apart?
The young mutant's thoughts were interrupted when the door leading to the roof opened and someone came up behind her.
"What are you doing out here, squirt?"
Jubilee mumbled out a retort to the nickname, mostly out of habit.
"Quit calling me squirt. I'm not a little kid."
Logan leaned against the ledge of the roof but didn't say anything, simply following Jubilee's gaze and looking up at the sky. The two of them sat in silence for a bit, the only noise being the howling of wind in the distance. In the end Jubilee was the one to break the quietness by commenting on the weather.
"It's gonna rain soon."
"Yeah, looks like it."
Jubilee gave a small smile as the idea of rain made her reminiscent.
"Remember that time we tried to cook dinner and accidentally started a fire?"
With most of the team having been gone that night it led to Jubilee and Logan trying to make dinner. However neither of them were very well versed in cooking. With the way chores were split up in the mansion Logan and Jubilee usually did other things to help out while one of the others was responsible for a lot of the cooking. This meant they were lacking in certain, important areas. Like how not to light half of the kitchen on fire.
"Then Storm came into the kitchen and tried to make it rain to put the fire out but that just made it bigger because it was a grease fire. She was so surprised when the fire shot up that she accidentally electrocuted the toaster."
Logan smirked slightly as Jubilee continued talking.
"None of us were allowed into the kitchen for a while after that."
Once the story was finished they slipped back into silence, content with waiting to see if the other would say anything. Eventually Jubilee worked up the courage to finally bring up why she had been on the roof in the first place, why she was thinking of memories she had of Storm and why she was so focused on the weather.
Jubilee looked up at Logan with a hopeful, almost pleading expression.
"Storms gonna come back right? I mean, she has to come back. This is her home, her family."
Logan turned away from her and stared at the clouds in the distance. He stayed silent for a moment before speaking.
"She might, but that's something she's gotta decide on her own. If she needs time away from the team to deal with everything then we can't get in the way of that."
Jubilee contemplated the older mutant's words for a moment. The thoughts and fears of all of the different things that could happen came up to the surface of her mind again. Jubilee managed to murmur the most frightening one.
"What if she never comes back?"
Logan's expression hardened as he looked down at the young mutant staring up at him with worry. He wasn't known to be comforting and that was for good reason. But when Logan looked down at Jubilee he couldn't just stand by and say nothing because that wasn't what she needed from him right now.
"Sometimes people come back and sometimes they don't. Both times you gotta be thankful cause they either came back to you or cause you got to spend the time you did with them."
Jubilee clenched the sides of her jacket tightly and tried to fight the tears that threatened to spill out. Logan's face softened and he put his hand on her shoulder. He doesn't mention the tears the Jubilee had begun quickly wiping away.
"C'mon kid, let's go back inside. It's warmer in there."
Jubilee took one last look at the clouds filling the sky, the wind howling and the distant sight of lightning. She hoped that Storm would be one of the ones who came back to them, even if it took time to get there.
