It was the year 2016.
A young man, wearing a student uniform consisting of a white dress shirt and dark blue necktie, dark blue pants, and a light brown jacket, was standing near the gates of what is known as West Genetics Academy, one of many military branch schools belonging to the worldwide organization Genetics, tasked with extradimensional affairs, one of the main focuses was that of fighting the extradimensional threat called the Nova. The young man had dark blue hair and light blue eyes. His expression was nothing like the other students, male and female, many of whom were a mixture of Japanese and other foreign nationalities, who would walk past him with cheerful and excited faces, eager for their eventual step into the next world. His face was not something that people would draw attention to. In fact, one could say he was rather plain-looking and had the appearance of a slender build.
"Do you know why you're here, Agent Thruston?"
That was the question that the man with a black eyepatch on his left eye socket had asked him last night. It was a brief meeting, in preparation for this day. Blend in with the crowd. Be part of the crowd. His mission was to simply keep an eye out for this academy under his organization's orders. Blackwatch. An interdimensional organization tasked with global, intergalactic, and interdimensional security. He was one of those specific individuals called Armed Agents, covert field agents working for Blackwatch, tasked with a variety of assigned missions.
In his case, it was to simply attend West Genetics Academy, among other things that fall under the realm of normal, as much as the term could be said, especially with the dangers of interdimensional threats around the corner.
He took the first step, with his bag in tow. He walked just like everyone else. He had no friends or acquaintances among the newly arrived students. He may need to rectify this a little. Being an obvious loner would stick like a sore thumb. Being too friendly would not do him any favors either.
He walks along the pathways, inspecting the tall and large buildings. His eyes, while casual and normal, were analyzing the surroundings. At some point, he noted a young woman who was walking by with a stack of paperwork.
He stopped walking. He would immediately recognize the woman. He had not met her personally, but he had seen her in classified files and photos that were taken of her. She had long blonde hair that reached down to the middle of her back. Her eyes were narrowed in slits, odd yet mysterious, with two tied-up bangs that covered her cheeks and two forehead bangs split up in the middle. She was... ...very beautiful. The pictures did not seem to do her face justice.
His heart felt like racing a little. He tried to control his expression a little, a little trepid to not look stiff.
"Hm? Oh dear! No, no, no!" the young woman sported a distressed expression, raising her right hand.
The young man would notice some of the papers being shuffled by the wind. With quick reflexes, yet careful to maintain an adequate and believable movement, he would jump and grab the papers that were flying high. He gathered them all with ease, taking the load off by half. He turned back to the woman, whose trademark, enigmatic smile sported a little curious frown as she noticed him.
The two were now eyeing each other, neither speaking for a few moments. The young man did not say anything. His face was blank yet normal, careful to not be too suspicious. He would not make the mistake of underestimating the legendary Smiling Monster of West Genetics herself. Her frown turns to a smile, speaking with a soft greeting, with her voice being as sweet as a cake. "Why hello there. Do you, umm, mind giving me a hand with these?"
The young man nodded without speaking much. He would grab a few of the papers to unwind the load. Though he had some doubts that these papers were heavy on the woman, the unpredictable wind aside. Was this a test? Using a probable excuse of providing assistance that would allow her to get to know him? Possible. He supposed.
"Are you new around here?" the young woman asks the man who she noted had been silent and never spoke much.
The young man nodded.
"Do you have a name?" the young woman asks.
The young man would ask back, with a serious no-nonsense tone. "With respect, I feel that I should be the one to ask for your name first."
"Oh? And why is that?" the woman's smile became a little perky.
"Ladies first," the young man said. There was no sarcasm in the tone.
"Hm~ Well, my name is Chiffon Fairchild, the current student council president of West Genetics Academy, my second term if we're going to be specific," the young woman introduced herself. "And you?"
The young man, not facing her, and focused on walking, said. "Eugene Thruston."
"Eugene Thruston. Hmm, that's a nice name," Chiffon mused a little.
Eugene did not make any comment on this and simply opted to be quiet for the rest of the trip, eventually finding themselves in the student council room. Eugene would open the door and found a simple room that consisted of a few office desks, a moveable blackboard, a table, and other things. He and Chiffon would place the paperwork on the desk.
"Thank you for helping me bring these, Eugene," Chiffon spoke gratefully.
Eugene nods a little. "If you would not mind, Student Council President, but I may need to take leave, seeing as you probably have duties to attend."
"Mou~!" Chiffon made a pouting expression. "You don't have to be so formal with me while we are alone together."
"I'd be careful with words like that, because if some people pass by and hear it, they may misunderstand what you say and may spread unnecessary rumors," Eugene sagely cautioned the woman.
"Hmm," Chiffon giggled a little, putting her right index finger to her lips. "Oh, I doubt the rumors would go too far, not with the power I wield."
"Should I be concerned about an abuse of power among the student body of this school?" Eugene asks.
"Wha!" Chiffon made a fake teary-eyed expression. "Now that's just mean, I...I would never abuse my power." She muttered the last part.
Eugene made no further comment on that. "In any case, do you need anything else, Student Council President?"
"Okay, first of all, call me Chiffon, Chi-ffon! Repeat after me, Chiffon!" Chiffon would say, raising her right index finger and wagging it a little.
"...Ms. Fairchild," Eugene attempted another course, feeling a little discomfort due to the lack of formalities.
Chiffon made an X gesture with her arms. "Nope, wrong, no formalities, not even in English, call me Chiffon, or else you won't leave this room."
Eugene breathed a sigh, thinking up something random on the fly. Considering the type of woman that was standing before him, he'd resort to other terms. Since he was in Japan, honorifics could work, but one in particular stood out. "Alright, how about...onee-chan?"
"Hmm?" Chiffon made a surprised expression. She was silent for a few moments before she eventually spoke. "...Umm, why call me that?"
"That seems like the type of woman you are, at least based on what I observed so far, though seeing as it is limited to just only a few minutes at most, there may be a possible defect in my observation," Eugene answered.
"Hmm..." Chiffon made a thoughtful expression, putting one hand to her chin. Then she made a bright and cheerful smile. "I suppose... I can make a little exception to that, for now."
Eugene nodded in satisfaction. "So, once again, I should probably take my leave."
"Hmm," Chiffon nodded as she saw Eugene head towards the door.
As he was about to exit and close the door, Eugene would bow his head to her out of respect. "Once again, it is a pleasure to meet you, onee-chan."
Then Eugene would take his leave.
Chiffon Fairchild's smile would turn to one of serious curiosity.
She became thoughtful of the young man who had helped her with the paperwork. His face and appearance were a little plain, and yet, there was something about the man's eyes that spoke volumes for Chiffon. That sense of familiarity. A certain weariness that hid behind the veil of normality. What is he hiding?
The young man was quite formal, surmising that he had difficulty around it. Just what kind of upbringing did he experience? A military family with a penchant for discipline? Possible. When he speaks, he tries to contain the subject with a few precise words. The young man did not seem like most male teenagers with a tendency for macho man-related traits, he was more closed off, blunt yet not too much, and respectful to a tea. Also, she noted his good reflexes, timed accordingly, when he would grab all of the papers that would fly by the sudden wind.
He did not seem to be afraid of her, despite the little twitch that she noted in a blink-and-you-miss-it kind of way. No, it seems like something else. He seems a little mesmerized by her, not fear. Has he not heard of what she did in the Carnival last year ago? She never asked. Most of the Limiters nowadays would be slightly off-put by what she did back then. If the young man has not heard of it, likely in this case because he's a freshman after confirming it earlier, then that at least explains the lack of fear. However, that still did not account for the strange familiarity of his eyes. His eyes reminded her of her own.
What are you hiding, Eugene Thruston?
Perhaps after this, she could try to research about this new Limiter, who had currently intrigued her a bit. Perhaps... she found her own Limiter by sheer happenstance? As a Pandora in her second year, she is more than required to gain a Limiter at this time. Though, most if not all leave a lack to be desired in Chiffon's opinion. Then came Eugene Thruston.
Her father had given her the freedom to choose a Limiter. Originally, she most likely was going to pick a limiter with a high capability and an even temperament. She was quite neutral about the whole situation involving the ceremony of Baptism. As long as the Limiter can do his job competently, Chiffon would have no complaints on the matter.
But...
"...Eugene Thruston, hmm..."
Chiffon made a little smile. Perhaps, she thought, things would get a little interesting.
