The cut that always bleeds.

The fall fair, the towns few joys. It sit among the thrones of the best events that happen in Uranium across the year (along with free slurpees and christmas). One thing the people of the small town could agree on, was that it was probably the best place to be when it was on.

Everyone apart from Noel Gruber.

The fair itself wasn't bad per say, but the thought of all the rides, and the carnies, the smell of cigarettes and the slight essence of weed and alcohol just made Noel gag.

Oh, the crowds too. God did he hate crowds.

He's always been like that. For example, one time when he was seven, he and his mother went a few towns over for a Christmas parade that was being held. All fun right? Wrong. Eventually, around two hours after they had been there, Noel started to panic. His stomach felt tight and he felt as if he was losing himself as he sobbed and sobbed, unwillingly flicking his head back and clicking his fingers. His mother panicked as they went back to the car and tried to calm him down as they drove home.

It wasn't much of a shock when he was diagnosed with autism when he was 12.

He didn't let anyone know of course, not many people could tell anyway. He seemed to mask it super well. He became scarily good at it by the time he hit 9th grade. Pretty much no one knew (Ocean, Constance and Ricky were exemptions). Hell, even his boyfriend didn't know! And he was planning on keeping it that way for a rather long time. He didn't want to suddenly get treated like some weirdo or baby just because he happened to be neurodivergent, he sees what happens with Ricky.

Unfortunately, not everything can be done to prevent a sensory overload.

---

The choir were doing some stupid competition at the fall fair. The exact same one where they came second last year. You may think that's good, but they were the only ones competing. You can imagine how embarrassing it is to take a 'second place choir' award when you were against yourself.

The performance itself was... Well... It was a performance? They weren't as bad as last year, that's for certain. They were ACTUALLY against other choirs this time, so their chances of winning were slim.

As the judges took a 2 hour break before announcing the winners, Father Marcus let everyone just have a roam around the fair.

Everyone took quick solitude in knowing where they were going.

First, Noel and Mischa went on the Ferris wheel, it was as romantic as someone could make it when the thing squeeked scarily every time it moved and was probably more germ ridden than a trash can, yet, they enjoyed it none the less.

Then they were (not willingly) on the bumper cars with Ocean. Granted, they made one too many children cry and Noel almost broke his neck from how much he was flung around, yet, it was probably one of the more fun options of the day.

Then, they tried out some of those shitty carnival games. Noel could see Mischa trying his absolutely hardest to not deck Ocean in the face as she kept explaining how dangerous it would be if he actually won the goldfish and how it probably wouldn't survive the ride home. He won it anyway and it didn't make it half an hour, which caused Ocean to smugly smile and go "I told you so.".

Around the hour mark of them being left to their own devices, Noel ܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻܻ felt weird. He knew he was starting to go, the voices around him were going in one ear and out the other. His head involuntary started twitching (barely noticeable, but he could feel it) and his chest felt heavy.

He tried desperately to calm himself down, squeezing Mischa's hand ever so slightly tighter as they walked around the fair. Trying his hardest to not fully go.

"You ok Poet?" Mischa asked, looking at his boyfriend with slight concern, Noel didn't normally look this frazzled, he just wanted to know.

"Mhm? Yeah, I'm fine don't worry" Noel lied, a sad excuse for a smile plastered across his face.

"If you say so" Mischa sighs, before not bringing it up again. Just walking around slowly, trying to find some shitty carnival game that didn't have a massive line so they could go to it.

In this time, Noel wasn't any better. He wouldn't dare let the tears in his eyes fall. He suppressed his head twitching as much as he could (it hurt slightly but he'll take it) and he tried his hardest to not change his breathing pattern.

Crowds surrounded him. People brushed into him with no bother, narrowly avoiding stepping on his feet, it became hard to move without looking like he was stuck in some cardboard box. The noise was the worst. Voices all around him spitting incoherent words, some loud, some even louder.

"I'm gonna go find somewhere quiet" Noel says, slipping his hand away from his boyfriend's.

"Want me to come with?"

"No thanks, you can enjoy your time though! I'll meet you in 15 by that shitty soccer game?" Noel smiled, Mischa gave a polite nod before Noel walked off slowly, walking quicker when he knew he was far enough away from his boyfriend.

He found himself sitting in the minivan that drove them here. He sat in the back row, feet up on the chairs as he held his chin between his knees. Tears fell from his eyes, head twitching uncontrollably and his fingers stayed clicking. His chest went up and down quickly as he tried his best to calm down.

He shook uncontrollably whilst stimming for God knows how long before his phone started blowing up. He tried his best and barely made out the text that sprawled it's way across his lock screen.

Ocean

Ocean: where are you?

Ocean: Noel? Are you ok?

Ocean: I'm coming to look for you.

read: 13:23 pm

Great. Absolutely fantastic. Now someone else will see him like this. Yes, it is Ocean, and yes, she does know he's autistic; but he really doesn't want to be seen right now.

He looked a mess. His hair was messy from where he pulled it, his uniform sweater had a dark patch from where his tears had fallen, his eyes were red from crying and he was still twitching his head and his finger clicking hand changed to hands flapping.

Nothing stopped Ocean, he knew when he heard the minivan door slide open. He looked up and saw two faces. Ocean and Mischa.

Shit.

Ocean, sure, she knew, he could handle it, but Mischa? He didn't know. He didn't want him to know. Yet here he is, seeing Noel in his (not so fabulous) glory, stimming and crying. Fantastic.

"Poet?" Mischa asked, now fully concerned for his boyfriend.

"I'm sorry" Noel sobbed quietly.

"I'm sorry Noel I didn't think you'd want me right now" Ocean said quietly, picking her nails.

"It's fine. Can you leave though?" Noel instructed before Ocean nodded awkwardly and left the minivan. Leaving just Noel and Mischa. Together. Great.

"I'm sorry" Noel sobbed quietly again, his head no longer twitching, yet his hands still flapped a little.

"My Poet, are you ok?" Mischa asked, voice full of concern as he sat across from his lover, legs crossed as he sat on the back of the minivan.

"No. Everything just got a lot and yeah. I'm sorry." Noel just kept apologizing profusely, for no absolute good reason apart from being scared. He was so unbelievably vulnerable right now it's insane.

"Do you want me to hold your hand or should I not touch you?" Mischa wondered, not really knowing what to do.

"Please hold my hand" Noel practically begged, reaching out his hand. Still not looking up from his knees.

Mischa took Noel's hand carefully, yet he didn't speak. He allowed Noel to talk on his own terms.

"Mischa I'm autistic. And I guess I just got too overwhelmed about... Everything. I'm sorry I didn't tell you" Noel sobbed slightly, not looking up.

"My poet I could not care less about if you're autistic or not. I just don't like seeing you upset. Please let me know next time so I can help you" Mischa mumbled quietly, still holding Noel's hand.

"Thank you Mischa" Noel said, not looking up.

"I uh- i won you this... I hope you like it" Mischa says, awkwardly holding some sort of stuffed bear in his hand.

Noel finally looked up, his eyes were still full of tears and his cheeks were bright red, but he was smiling. He happily took the bear and moved so he was resting his head on Mischa's shoulder, still holding his hand.

"Thank you" Noel smiled.

"You're welcome"

Then, the minivan door opened.

"Sorry to interrupt your moment, but they're about to announce the winners for the choir competition and they want everyone on stage" Constance says, smiling sweetly, before Noel and Mischa followed suit and to the stage. Where they prepared for total humiliation.

"... And the winners of the Kiwanis international singing competition is... The St Cassian Chamber Choir!" The announcer smiled, before handing Ocean a rather large trophy, one she gracefully took with an over-rehearsed smile.

Afterwards, as they had actually won for once, Father Marcus treated everyone to ice cream on him as a celebration.

The rest of the day went perfect, and the moment between Noel and Mischa soon went forgotten as the joy in the room drowned out the bad.
