I'm sorry
Penny sat on the couch, she was unlucky to be in the presence of her parents when they were both in the same room. At least this time they weren't arguing about each other, they were arguing about a protest on the news. A nearby town was holding a protest for gay rights, a peaceful one but it still made the news. Penny watched it happily, her parents were not.
"I mean, it's ridiculous! Why do they want more rights? We let them be together?" He father yelled, tearing Penny's heart into two. She knew for certain she could never tell them about her and Ocean, she'll probably end up on the streets somehow.
"They don't want more rights they want equal rights, which is still very stupid, they're different, why would they want that" her mother yelled back.
Penny watched them yell about the tv. They were saying some awful things, some Penny wished she never heard.
"Oh, at least our kids won't act like this, right Pen?" Her mom looked at her.
Penny looked back, not saying anything.
"Penny?" He father demanded
"Penny lamb you speak this instance" her mother yelled
Penny just sat there, quite scared. She realized her mistake.
"Penny you finish your sentence"
Penny didn't speak.
"Penny, you just speak now."
"I'M A LESBIAN, Jesus Christ, there I said it. Ok? I've got a girlfriend. Your little daughter likes women, is that so difficult to understand?" Penny yelled, slapping her hand over her mouth as she realized what she said.
"Leave now" Her father said in a deathly monotone voice. The type he used when he was angry, the calm before the storm voice. She'd heard it a few times before, but this one instilled more fear in Penny's body than she had ever had before, and probably will ever again.
Penny looked at her mother, she was shaking her head, she was probably more mortified than angry.
"I'm giving you two minutes. I don't want to see you in my house again." Her dad said, each word was a blade, it slid slowly from her feet to her skull, every word making the knife dig deeper and deeper.
Penny left the living room, thinking of what she would bring. She had the choir. She had 5 houses she was always welcome to go to.
Penny packed some basics, her phone, a charger, some clothes, a pair of shoes, her favorite books and her favorite childhood doll, that sat neatly atop her pile of things.
Penny went to leave but felt herself being pulled into a hug.
"Take me with you" Ezra whispered
"I can't Ez, just stay here then when we're both 18 we'll leave, never coming back, keep texting me, I won't be far" Penny said back, pulling out of the hug, giving her brother one last smile before she left the house.
She knew where she was going. She walked for about half an hour before arriving at a small house, she went around the back to Ocean's room, she could see her girlfriend in there, quietly doing homework on her desk. Penny got ready and knocked slightly on the window. She watched Ocean look up, before having a fond look of recognition as she slid the window open and pulled her girlfriend in.
Penny sat down on the bed opposite Ocean, explaining the whole story. At this point, her eyes were red and puffy from her tears.
Ocean listened to the story, wide-eyed. Holding her girlfriend's hand, letting her squeeze it when she was getting more and more worked up. Penny stopped talking and fell into Ocean's shoulder, letting any tears left onto the fabric of Ocean's t-shirt. Ocean gave Penny a reassuring hug, rubbing her hand up and down Penny's back.
"You can stay as long as you need, my parents probably won't even know you're here" Ocean reassured. Penny just kept thanking her, she really wishes she hadn't come out. She now had no family. Well, she never really had one. She had Ezra. That was all she needed. She had another family too. The choir is probably where she feels most safe.
There's something so strange about it. They are all the complete opposites of each other, yet they fit together like some weird squiggly puzzle. It's like they were all destined to find each other through some weird fate. It's like every decision Penny had made had led up to her being in the choir, had led to her meeting Ocean. Some weird butterfly effect was happening. It's probably the best thing to every happen. Penny doesn't know what she would do without her girlfriend here.
All she knows is, she'd be on the streets without them. And shes forever thankful she isn't.
