Late Night Snack
Chapter Five: Late Night Snack
The kitchen was quiet, say for the light buzzing above Morph as they sat at the table, watching their boyfriend make them a sandwich with whatever he could find in the fridge. Knowing Wolverine, there would be wayyy too much meat on there, but Morph was hungry, and that sounded good right now. They finally had enough energy to give themself a pair of pajama pants but nothing else. Logan walked over and set down the plate with the “whatever’ sandwich in front of his partner and kissed the top of their head. Morph looked at it hesitantly. Had it really been over a week since they last ate? It seemed like maybe a day or two at most but it did feel like it had been longer. They had been more out of it than they thought.
Morph hesitated at the sight of the sandwich. They could hear Sinister’s words from so long ago “You don’t deserve to eat. It's not like you need to anyway” Which was half true, half not. That’s why they grew so sickly and thin before.
Logan noticed their hesitation and decided that maybe distracting them would help. “So” he began, “Why do you still eat if you don’t need a stomach to function?”
“Uh, well I still need to replenish my energy somehow.” They picked up the sandwich and took a bite, yeah he put too much meat on it, “Stomach’s the only way I know how to digest it. It’s the only way I know how to get nutrients, same as anyone else I guess.” They paused to swallow. “Photosynthesis isn’t an option, believe me, I tried.”
“You tried?” Logan looked at them as if that one answer just brought up more questions.
“Yeah, I look pretty cute as a flower.” They smiled at him, knowing it would just confuse him more.
“A pansy, maybe” Logan jabbed at them.
“Hah! Well I’d rather be compared to a flower than a wild animal” They jabbed back.
The two continued like this until Morph finished their sandwich, and without being asked, Logan grabbed the plate, rinsed it off and set it to the side of the sink. Morph pushed out the chair and stood up to walk back to the room when Logan interjected “Thought y’re too tired to walk, hmm?”
“Nah, I’m up now. Not like you were gonna carry me back to the room too.” They pushed in the chair, and without a chance to protest, Logan grabbed his partner by their waist and slung them over his shoulder as if they weighed nothing. Morph yelped at that then let out their signature cackle that practically melted The Wolverines heart. Even though he had gone longer without hearing it, it had still been too long. 30 minutes was too long to go without hearing their laugh. “What are you doing?” They got out between giggles.
“Carryin’ you back to th’ room” He chuckled back. He felt Morph hug his waist in the awkward, upside-down position.
“Mmm ok I guess. You have been carrying me all day anyway” They said quietly as the two slinked through the quiet hallways, trying to not disturb anyone that may be asleep. Neither of them even knew the time but no one was out in the common areas so that was a good enough sign to hush their giggles.
They made their way back to the team’s rooms where they ran into Scott, who was just getting up for the day, ready to start his morning training. He looked at them both quizzically and turned his head to face the upside-down half a little better and smiled “Well I’m glad to see you're doing well, Morph.”
They just giggled and gave him a quiet “Hi, Scott”
“Rogue found your jacket by the way, it's in your room.” He said with his head still turned.
“‘Nuff jabberin, they got sleep to catch up on.” Logan practically kicked their bedroom door in and tossed Morph on the bed, gently of course. He laid down next to them and gently stroked their face.
“Hi,” they whispered.
“Hi,” he grunted back.
“I don’t know if I’m gonna be able to sleep much tonight.” They admitted in a hush tone, eyes not meeting his. He knew what they meant, they both have had one too many nights like this. Recovery was a process, Logan knew that, and he could tell by his partner’s anxious heartbeat that tonight would be long and full of nightmares, but that didn’t mean the two of them couldn’t try and rest.
“Just try your best, and I’ll be here if ya do wake up, hell I’ll prob’ly wake you up at some point.” He said pointedly and grabbed their head resting it against his chest.
“You can always tell, can’t you? When the nightmares come?” Morph sighed into their partner.
“ ‘s not hard to tell when your heartbeat wakes me up, or your face changes shape. Now go to sleep, y’ need it.” He rubbed his thumb gently across the back of Morph’s head.
“Promise you’ll still be here when I wake up?” Kevin wrapped their arms around Logan’s broad chest and hugged as tightly as they could at the moment.
“I promise, sweetheart. Now get some rest.” He gently kissed their head and they both drifted off to sleep, not without interruption of horrid visions and memories too terrible to name, but with Logan’s comfort, Morph was able to at least sleep peacefully for a few hours that night.
