When it comes to Peter Stark, Steve has no power. The two year olds already mastered the art of puppy dog eyes, with olive skin, black curls, and big green eyes he's the sweetest baby any of the Avengers have ever seen.
Obviously, he's Tonys son, Tonys the one with the adoption papers and the nursery in his wing, and he's Peters favourite. Peters just, the sweetest, he toddles around the tower and every single Avenger is hopelessly enamoured with the boy.
Currently, the Avengers are having a bit of a movie night/hangout minus Steve and Clint. The two Avengers had been off on a mission for the past couple days and just finished up early. On the way back in the quinjet Clint somehow, by some magical miracle, got the Steve Rogers to agree to hide in the common room to surprise the Avengers.
So thats how Steve Rogers ended up squished in the game cabinet (how he got in there he couldn't tell you) while Clints in his usual vent. He's sitting on a monopoly board, he's already killed two spiders and he's starting to think Clints never gonna go through with the plan just to mess with him.
Meanwhile, the Avengers are all hanging out and Peters toddling around on his tiny little legs, waddling around and playing with stuffed animals and exploring the heavily babyproofed room. He's a smart kid, he figures out how to open up the cabinet and comes face to face with Cap.
Steve just stares into the toddlers eyes for a moment, both of them in silence, then Peters little face lights up and he begins doing that baby thing and bouncing on his little knees and giggling and Steve is a weak, weak man. He tries to put a finger over his lips and murmer something about hide and seek but he can't resist the little imp so in a quick movement he scoops Peter up and into the cabinet with him.
Tony is always in mom mode, to the point of mild concern, his eyes never really leave Peter in case of an accident. So when he watches a pair of two muscular, pale, slightly beat down hands reach out and snatch up his son he sees nothing but pure horror and fury.
He doesn't think about the fact that he's in the most protected building in probably the whole world with AI's that would undoubtedly tell if there was a break in, not that Peter was laughing and seemed excited (but the kid loves everyone, even weird kidnapper creeps), not that Sams trying not to laugh at something in the vent.
No, he see's his sons in danger and he moves on pure impulse.
In seconds he's lunging for the cabinet with pure fury on his face, slamming open the door with a loud and powerful "HEY!" before immediately stopping and staring at the scene.
Captain Rogers is balled up in the cabinet with Peter on his lap, Peters bouncing and squealing and Steve looks up startled but amused, Tony is gaping and totally shell shocked.
"I- You uh, when- why, did- what?!" Tony stutters out gracefully, staring at the usually noble, chivalrous, and idealistic man sitting on a monopoly board looking like he's ready to burst out laughing.
"We got laid off early" Steve says like it explains anything at all, Peter babbles a mix of words that don't go together and his own made up language, "We were gonna surprise yall, but the little imp found me first" Then he kisses Peter on his little black curls and Tony feels something in him shift.
Steve looks more caring and affectionate then Tony thinks he's ever seen him, balled up in the game cabinet bouncing Peter in his lap, his blonde hair askew and his mouth in a sleepy grin and Tony feels like his heart is beating way too loud and his mouths gone dry.
Steves still laughing softly, "Did you think I was-"
"Yes! I just saw someone’s big ass hand grab my son and my heart nearly stopped…” He runs a hand through his messy hair again.
Tony takes a few seconds to regain his breath. Meanwhile the rest of the Avengers are watching the scene go down in amusement.
Steve laughs and holds out a hand to be hefted up, "Can you help me out of here?" And Tony does, Steve grunts but manages to get to his knees, laughing.
No one knows how Clint gets in and out of the vents but he scurries off and a moment later comes in through the entrance and gives Nat a hug. "Were home!" He exclaims, cracking up as Steve stands up.
Tony is transfixed on the man, both him and Clint are a little sweaty and gross, sure, but Steve looks so sweet cuddling Peter and kissing his little potbelly, Tony feels his palms start to sweat and his face start to heat and butterflies fly around in his stomach and- oh no.
This cannot be happening.
The great Tony Stark, Iron Man, genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, has a crush on Captain Spangles. No.
This can't happen! Steve is, he's serious and a tight ass and doesn't get referneces past 1942! He can't have a crush on him, he's not in middle school! But then again, as he stares and stares and stares he's starting to doubt his genius brain.
"You scared me, capsicle" Is all he manages to choke out, standing at the blonde man cuddling his son.
Steve gives Tony his first look of very mild remourse, "Sorry, I didn't expect the little genius to find me before anyone else did, I couldn't resist"
Tony rolls his eyes good naturedly, walking back to his seat on the floor and Steve plonks down next to him, Buckys laughing into his hand.
"That was actually ...kinda terrifying" He says, looking at Tony, Wanda giggles and nods.
"What?" Tony asks, he wasn't paying attention. He was looking at Steve.
"You swan diving for the cabinet and screaming as loud as possible" Rhodey says calmly, an amused smile on his face.
"I thought someone was taking my kid!" He exclaims and is met with a chorus of 'awws' and coos. He rolls his eyes and makes the mistake of looking back to Steve whos smiling softly at him, a twinkle in his blue eye and-
