Chapter 5
The family stayed close to the children only leaving for necessities. The parents and siblings of the children managed most of their care from bathing, changing, fluffing pillows, and adding or taking away bedding they did it all and got snippy with anyone they thought might've been encroaching.
Pietro had visits from the brotherhood to tell him of any mischief they caused during their school years. Told him stories of missions and adventures that happened after they graduated. Wanda and Magneto seldomly left his side. Wanda did her best to soothe his fear while Magneto promised to be better than he was for him. When they slept, it was with Pietro still scared that he would be gone again when they woke up.
Kitty was watched over by Logan who refused to sleep until she woke up. He could only be convinced if Scott or Jean were there to watch her for him. He wouldn't even leave for food, only eating when Victor would come and force him to eat something. The one time he was startled led to someone being nearly decapitated by his claws. Since that moment everyone always treaded very carefully around him.
Mystique and Rogue obsessed over Kurt finding wrong after wrong. He was too thin, too small, too fragile. So they refused to let him go unless it was to tend to him in some other way. Mystique scorned herself for not being more present in her children's life as Rogue scorned herself for always being too rough with him when he was only ever kind to her.
The adults without a child to look after took turns looking after Y/N. Cable always supervised, as far as he was concerned he was there first so Y/N was his first. He sat by their side hand holding onto one of their hands always staying alert.
Sabretooth often visited them with Laura by his side when he wasn't checking on his brother. He brought pelts that he and Laura hunted together for them to stay warm. When he took the time to sit beside them he would massage the areas where their blades came out being all too familiar with the aches that their new growths would cause. He would tell Y/N stories of great hunts and greater kills as Laura braided their hair. If Laura fell asleep beside Y/N Victor would stay to watch over his niece not being able to leave her alone after everything.
Morph would come by to light candles and always bring a gift. Morph would tell them of how things have changed in the fashion world and any gossip that has happened. What new hot style was in, who cheated on who, anything and everything under the sun they chattered. And at the end of it, Morph would apologize. For not paying Y/N more attention even when they looked up to them. Then Morph would excuse themself so they wouldn't cry on top of Y/N. Last time they did that Cable nearly bit their head off.
Whenever Gambit came by he never knew what to say to them having never been close. He noticed that Y/N went unnoticed by the others but they never seemed bothered by it, so he never said anything about it. He promised that he'd be there for them better. That he would teach Y/N what he knew from family recipes, tricks of his trade before the X-Men, that he would be more vocal about their needs. Gambit could never stay long before the guilt started to eat him more than he could bear.
Hank always came with new books on science and engineering. When he stopped to speak to Y/N he would tell them of the discoveries that have been made since they were gone. What diseases made themselves known as others were cured, new animals that were discovered, experiments they could perform together. He could never stay long though as a doctor's work was never done no matter how much he wished it was.
Whenever The Professor visited Y/N he would try to use his telepathy on them. Rarely was he successful in seeing more than surface thoughts. So he would talk to them about how proud he was of them. How he was sorry that he never realized how much they did for everyone until they were gone. Then he would promise that he and Erik would help to train them in their telepathy and magnekinesis so that they could be their best. Then he would leave to visit the rest and ensure his children who were still awake were taking care of themselves properly.
Cable looked up to see Jean and his father walk in taking a seat on the other side of Y/N.
"You should move the kids into one room." Cable told them as his thumb rubbed circles into Y/N's hand.
"What do you mean Nathan?" Scott questioned as his brows furrowed.
"When the kids start waking, if they can't sense the others they will panic. Particularly Y/N, if they start panicking there is very little chance of you succeeding in keeping them in the mansion." Cable responded as he met their eyes.
"We'll get them moved right away then, The Professor says that everyone should start waking soon," Jean speaks up as she sends a message to the others so they can start moving the children.
"Good." Cable huffs out.
Y/N started to thrash in their sleep but was quickly soothed when Cable ran his fingers through their hair as he hummed. Scott felt pride while Jean felt envy that Cable could soothe Y/N so quickly when nobody else had any luck.
"Nathan, how many times did you try to stop them from being taken?" Scott asked as he was careful to avoid Cable's eyes. His son never seemed to enjoy eye contact that he didn't initiate first.
"More times than I could count. When I couldn't save them I decided that I would be there for them as much as I could." His son answered as he brushed away Y/N's flyaways.
"And we will always be grateful that you were there when we should've been. That at least somebody was there to celebrate special moments with Y/N." Scott's voice was thick with remorse as Jean rested a hand on his shoulder.
"Yeah, well, you'll have your chance." Cable said.
The conversation fell to silence as Cable stood up and carefully detached the machines from Y/N. When the final chord was taken away Cable picked Y/N up and cradled them in his arms. The size difference between the two just made Y/N seem smaller and all the more frail. They left their room and followed the others carrying their children to the room that was set up for them to wake up beside each other.
