Surprise Attack
Breakfast has been eaten. He was a good cook. You didn’t make much conversation. He didn’t start one up, and there was no way in hell you were going to. Aside from you being naturally timid, you had to remember who he was. Constantly remember. But eventually…
“You don’t have to look at me with contempt. Have I not been kind to you?”
You realised how your face had looked this entire time.
“Sorry.” He chuckled.
“Ah, well. Seems you’re done.” You go to pick up the plate but as your fingertips reach it the object lifts from your touch. He gives a sort of smug look as he carries the plate away onto the counter. “Now…” His words were cut off by a commotion heard by the both of you. “What?” He says sharply, immediately rushing to the scene. You sat there sort of dumbfounded. Could it be? Was this your rescue? After he’d left, you couldn’t help but grow curious. You get to your feet and follow the noise that you can still hear. You hear voices. Mr. Logan’s voice. It was true.
“Bub, you’re okay!” As you peeked yourself into view he rushes to your side. You see behind him Mystique, three deep wounds in her stomach as she laid limp. She was still alive, but could no longer fight. “Let’s getchu outta here, hm?” You… don’t feel as relieved as you should be feeling. Especially when you turn and see him. And he’s got his helmet off. And he looks as if he’s struggling.
“They… they caught me unaware.”
Mr. Logan wasn’t the only one there. It’d be stupid to send just him out against Magneto. From behind Wolverine wheeled out the professor, clearly stopping him from using his powers.
“My student, you’re in safe hands now.” No… no, why do you feel bad for him? You can’t even really control yourself as your hands raise and the two X-Men look at you, startled. “Y/N, no!”
-
“Awake, are we?”
What? You were all the way back from when you first woke up. You’ve never gone back that far before. You obviously freak out and he drops the smug act, concern suddenly coming to him. “Right, I know this is an unfortunate situation but you don’t have to panic—“
“I went back.”
He pauses, looking to you confused.
“What?”
“You’re right. I can go back further than I thought.” The confusion turns into intrigue.
“Really? Why did you go back? Did I tell you to?” You shake your head. You recall that he… didn’t even ask you to do that. He really could’ve. It didn’t seem like the professor was restricting his speech. You just sort of did it on instinct.
“We need to repeat certain events so that nothing unexpected happens. After I finish the breakfast you… eventually, make me the X-Men make a surprise attack. They, somehow get ahold of your helmet.” He… looked bewildered.
“Why… did you go back? Don’t you want that?” You hesitate. Because you don’t really know yourself. What you did was crazy.
“I don’t know.” There’s a silence between you two. Not awkward but still, there’s… some kind of tension.
“I suppose future me was pretty convincing.” He finally chuckled. And it got a smile out of you too. And then, you go into more detail. About what events follow up until the attack. You… had a nap, in his bed. You wake up and run into Mystique again. When this event repeated itself, she said the exact same things of course, but it was, odd, seeing her nice and healthy after previously seeing her barely conscious. It was nice, having to experience his breakfast again. But you knew, this was when it happened.
“Remember, I’ll go back if this goes haywire. Just… not as far.” You reassure, and he replies,
“Yes. I’ll try to get this on the first try. I wouldn’t want to strain you.” He was, really sweet. Maybe that was why you went back. A part of you wanted to stay here.
Mystique was warned beforehand. So the commotion sounded different. It was a cry that was quite distinct, it was a cry from Mr. Logan. Reaching that same area, Mystique had him in a headlock, clearly they had been taken off-guard this time. She was clearly quite struggling, but once Magneto approached with his helmet on he could easily put away his claws and make him pretty much useless now. You were peeking around a corner but he still somehow saw you.
“This was fuckin’ fool-proof… bub… was this you?”
Your heart skips a beat and you hide yourself, feeling instant guilt. But Magneto answers for you.
“Yes, they’ve chosen their side, it seems. And what important intel.”
Mystique lets go of Wolverine and let’s him handle it, his metal skeleton making him Magneto’s personal rag doll.
“And I know you’re here too, Charles. You can’t beat the powers of time itself, so let’s see this your final attempt.” Mr. Logan was sent flying, and you supposed the professor didn’t even try. There was nothing he could really do with that helmet still on him. You heard footsteps, and it was him.
“I… I’d like to thank you. At first, I thought this was some ploy to get me to trust you. But it seems you really are… genuine.”
He pauses.
“You deserve to know it. Since you’ve chosen to stay here. My real name. It’s Erik.” You were sort of speechless. You still couldn’t believe what you’d just done. But, you didn’t even regret it. You’d know if you regret it, because you had the power to reverse any regrets you might have. This wasn’t one of them.
