Chapter 1

The first sound Peter hears is the gunshot. His heart seems to stop in that moment. He turns and sees Ben lying on the ground, blood soaking through his clothes, as people start to gather around, staring at the scene.

The thief runs off, leaving Peter frozen in place. Is this really happening?

Tears fill his eyes as his legs move on their own. He rushes toward his uncle, shoving anyone who gets in his way.

Ben. The man who stayed up nights helping him with his homework; the man who tended to his wounds and held him close, saying everything would be okay. He wasn’t there anymore, but his body lay before Peter, his eyes wide open in shock.

Someone was shouting to call an ambulance. People around looked on with sorrow. A woman pulled out her phone, and soon Peter found himself sitting in an ambulance next to his uncle’s lifeless body.
