When You Wish Upon a Star
Chapter One: When You Wish Upon a Star
It was late at night when Kitty came sneaking in to her room that she shared with her roommate and best friend, a girl only known as Rogue. Trying to sneak into bed without anyone knowing that she broke curfew was futile because her untouchable roommate wasn't asleep.
"Hey, Kitty Kat," Rogue said, lying in bed with her head propped up by her elbow. "Another late night."
"Quiet, Rogue, I don't want anyone to find out I broke curfew," Kitty said, putting one finger in front of her mouth and speaking in a quiet voice.
"That's the fourth time in two weeks," Rogue said. "And ah doubt you and Lance were just out holding hands."
"Oh, come on, Rogue, Lance and I are in love, so we did it a few times," Kitty said and she had a twinkle in her eye. "If you had a boyfriend you would understand."
"What makes ya think ah don't?" Rogue said and Kitty just laughed.
"Uhhh.... You're no touching thing," Kitty said. Rogue looked hurt that her friend and roommate would think that would stop her from getting a guy. "Wait a minute. Did you have a date tonight?"
"So what if I did?" Rogue asked but sarcastically.
"With who?" Kitty asked but something told Rogue she already knew.
"None of your business," Rogue snapped back at her.
"I bet I can guess," Kitty said but Rogue wasn't saying anything. "Let's see. Who is always hanging around when no one's watching? Could it be the same guy who kidnapped you last year, and the same one who gave you that card that you sleep with every night?"
"Shut up, Kitty," Rogue said, letting her anger get the better of her. "Who ah see is none of your business."
"Oh, come on, Rogue, I think it's great that you're going out. After that whole Scott crush..."
"That was a long time ago, and he's with Jean now, and ah'm...." Rogue didn't realize she still had the card in her hand.
"It is him, isn't it?" Kitty asked but she already knew the answer.
"Okay, fine, it is," she said and sat back down on her bed. "It's just that we can't... Damn, ah hate my powers. I wish ah had yours."
"Oh, yeah, my powers can be a pain too," Kitty said. "The first time Lance tried to kiss me I phased right through him and fell in some pond water. How romantic is that?"
"Well, at least you can kiss your boyfriend," Rogue said. "They only way we can kiss is if ah use that damn scarf. You don't know how lucky you are."
"No, I'm not," Kitty said. "Besides if I had your power I would take out bad guys just like that, and I use any power I wanted. I would be unstoppable."
"It ain't that easy, Kitty," Rogue said. "You couldn't handle my power."
"Oh, yeah," Kitty said, taking offense at that. "I wish I had your power."
"Well, ah wish I had yours," Rogue said and at that moment a star shot through the air outside their window. "This is pointless. There's no way that will ever happen."
"You're right," Kitty said as she pulled out her pajamas from her dresser drawer. She walked behind the screen and changed for bed. "Good night, Rogue."
"Good night, Kitty," Rogue said and drifted off into sleep.
