The Yule Ball
“MOONY WAKE UP!!!!!” Sirius shouted into his husband's ear.
Remus groaned and turned to face Sirius, “Yes darling? What is so important that you must scream it in my ear?”
“Its our baby’s first yule ball dumb ass!” Sirius replied, he sat for a while before jumping out of bed. “MERLIN! I NEED TO TELL JAMES!” He pressed a quick kiss into Remus’ lips, “I’LL SEE YOU LATER TONIGHT LOVE BYE BYE!”
Remus rolled his eyes as he got out of bed. He padded to the kitchen and poured himself a big cup of coffee. He made his way to the living room where he was enjoying his coffee and a new book. He had become so consumed in his book he didn’t even notice his son run into the house, keyword, almost. Just as Alex was trying to escape Remus said over his shoulder, “Alexander I know you’re there.”
“Yeah ok, bye dad see you tonight love you!” Alex picked up his things and continued walking.
“Alex! Come sit down.” Remus stood up and signalled to the couch. Alex set down his stuff and sat down next to his dad, “So, you need something?”
Remus smiled and jokingly huffed. “Can I not just want to spend time with my son?! Maybe I just missed you.”
“Dad, I literally live at your workplace.” Alex joked.
Remus laughed and ruffled his hair, “Cheeky kid. What are you getting?”
“Stuff.” Alex shrugged.
“What kind of stuff?” Remus asked.
“Stuff for a secret.” Alex said.
Remus raised an eyebrow and Alex rolled his eyes, “It’s safe Dad, don’t worry. You and Pop are still going to chaperone right?”
“Yes, Pop and I are chaperoning.”
“Alright great!” Alex bounced up out of his seat, “I’ll see you tonight.”
“Alright bye love!” Remus called at his son.
…
“REG! REG! WHERES JAMES!!” Sirius cried after inviting himself into his brother's quarters.
“Well,” Regulus poured his tea and sat down at the table, “James is being a responsible adult, unlike others in the castle and getting groceries. Tea?”
“Oh, yeah sure.” Sirius took a seat. “Remember your first Yule ball?”
“Yeah,” Regulus smiled, “Yeah I do.”
“James looked really good that year, no?” Sirius joked.
“Thats kinda gay, Sirius.” Regulus nudged his brother.
“You’re kinda gay.” Sirius nudged his brother back. Quickly the two of them began to jokingly wrestle until James entered the room, “Boys, boys, I know I am in fact incredibly attractive but there's no need to fight over me. There's more than enough to go around.”
The two brothers got up and brushed themselves off. Regulus pressed a quick kiss onto his husband, “Hi, love.”
“Hi darling.” James smiled. He then turned to Sirius and squealed, “Pads can you believe it!”
“I can’t!” Sirius replied, “Our babies! It’s their first Ball! You’re still chaperoning right?!” The questions tumbled out of Sirius’ mouth faster than James could answer them. After Sirius was finished talking James started walking over to the fire place, “Pads, I’m so excited!!!! What are you wearing? Wait, we should match! Merlin that would be downright awesome. Come on Pads we’ve got to go!” James quickly disappeared into the fireplace, Sirius on his feet. Regulus smiled and got to cleaning Sirius and his teas.
…
“Where are they?” Harry asked an equally nervous and excited Alex.
“I dunno,” Alex replied, “ ‘Mione isn’t one to take forever. And we said we would meet,” Alex checked his watch, “5 minutes ago.”
Just then, Draco and Hermione appeared at the top of the staircase. Draco came down the stairs first. Dressed in elaborate black dress robes with accents of green and silver. Harry smiled as he grabbed Draco’s hand. “Are you going to be okay?” Harry whispered into Draco’s ear.
“Yeah,” Draco smiled, “This is what I want. I want to be out. With you.”
Harry smiled back at the boy, admiration adorning his eyes, “Shall we?” And with that the two of them entered the Great Hall, which had been decorated beautifully for tonight.
Then Hermione came down the stairs wearing a sky blue dress with a pair of matching golden earrings and a necklace. “Wow,” Breathed Alex, “You are so beautiful, ‘Mione. So, so, beautiful.”
“Thanks,” Hermione tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ears and grabbed Alex’s hand, “You look handsome.”
“Thank you.” Alex smiled, “You have no clue how long it took for me to get my eyeliner this straight.”
“It’s straighter than you are, that's for sure.” Hermione laughed.
“Come on, I have…” Alex looked at the clock on the wall, “5 minutes till I gotta go.”
“Wait, you're still gonna do it?1” Hermione asked, a smile creeping onto face.
“Yes! And if we don’t go in now we are going to be late.” Alex began to walk into the Great Hall.
…
“Moons, have you seen Alex yet?” Sirius asked, basically bursting with energy.
“No,” Remus did a quick scan of the room, “But there’s Hermione. She probably knows.”
The pair made their way over to Hermione, who was staring at an empty stage at the front of the room, Remus approached her, “Do you know where Alex is?”
“Over there,” Hermione nodded her head towards the stage which now had the band on it, quickly plugging their stuff in.
“What do you mean? That's the school band, not Alex '' Sirius started. Remus rolled his eyes and jokingly swatted his head. Sirius turned to Remus, “But seriously though Moons, I don't- ohh. MOONY OUR SONS IS IN A BAND! HE'S GOING TO BE THE NEXT FREDDIE MERCURY!”
“Despite the fact that he doesn’t sing.” Remus commented. Just then the band started playing, He spotted Minerva from across the room and decided it would be best to get away from his husband and his incredible enthusiasm which had been joined by Marlene and James.
The headmistress was standing in the corner smiling at the stage. Remus stood next to her, “Pumpkin juice?” He asked, handing her a glass.
“Why thank you.” Minerva smiled. “He’s a natural.”
“He is, isn't he.” Remus looked fondly at the stage. The two of them stood at the back of the room enjoying the throwback music and vibing to the ones they hadn’t heard before. After 40 minutes they paused for a longer time. A few of the band members began to shuffle around and Alex made his way to the front. Then their drummer counted off and the sound of a cash register began to play in the great hall. It took Remus a moment before he realised what was playing. He got excited and turned to Minerva, “Sorry, I’ve got to go find Sirius. SIRI!”
Once he found Sirius, he blurted out, “Moony! Oh my gosh. I love this song!”
“I know-” Remus was about to add more when he and Sirius were shocked by who was singing. “Pads, is that?”
“Yes!” he said, “It is. Wow, Alex is a wonderful singer.”
“He is.” Marlene joined them, “Remember when we saw them live? Pink Floyd, not your son.”
“Yeah, I remember that.” Sirius gleamed at the stage with pride. “Remy, did we ever tell him that story?”
“Yeah, I think so.” Remus leaned on his husband and whispered, “I’m so proud of him Siri, he’s come so far.”
Sirius planted a kiss on Remus’ forehead, “He has.”
…
After the ball was over basically the entirety of Hogwarts was at the Room of Requirement after party. Alex was happy to be there and was enjoying the praise he got from his classmates from his performance (Though he would never admit to it). He was walking around with Hermione till he stumbled upon Ron, “Mate! ‘Sup want a drink?”
“Sure!” Alex smiled as he took the butterbeer from Ron’s hands. He then went back to sitting back and watching the party from the sidelines with Hermione. They enjoyed watching the party for a few minutes before Alex noticed Hermione rubbing at her temples.
“You okay?” He asked her.
“Yeah,” Hermione looked up at Alex. “I’m fine.”
Alex shook his head and grabbed Hermione by the wrist, heading for the exit. Once they had left they walked for a moment before Alex started talking, “There’s always a better word than fine. Was it a headache?”
“Yeah.” Hermione agreed sheepishly, “I just didn’t want to annoy you. You were having so much fun. And, parties just aren’t my thing. Not a fan of all the bodies and the noise.”
“ ‘Mione, you could never annoy me.” Alex smiled, “Wanna go to mine?”
“Would your dads mind?”
“Not at all.”
…
Harry and Draco had now made their way out of the after party and into the gryffindor common room. They were sitting by the fire with some blankets and were chatting about Christmas break.
“Are you sure you don’t want to stay here with me?” Harry asked again, knowing that Draco would enjoy much more if he was with the marauders and co.
“Darling, I told you I'll be fine.” Draco rolled his eyes and smiled, “And besides, my father would get suspicious since Blaise and Pansy are coming home.”
“That makes sense.” Harry sighed, defeated. He wished that he could make it all better for Draco and Draco could see it on his face.
“Don’t even say it. This isn't your situation to control, everything you do for me has helped tremendously.” Drac leaned into Harry, resting his head on his shoulder, “And think of it this way. 3 more years and I’m free.”
Harry didn’t say anything and the two sat together in silence enjoying their company. They soaked up the last that they would see of each other before Draco pressed a small kiss to Harry’s head.”I’m gonna go finish packing. I’ll see you in the morning?”
“See you in the morning Draco.” Harry called and the portrait door closed.
Draco took his time as he walked down the halls. He enjoyed the quiet now and unlike home, the quiet at Hogwarts wasn’t menacing. There was nothing lurking in the shadows, nothing there to keep him on his toes, unlike at home Draco could just be. Once Draco got to the dungeons he entered the password for the slytherin dorms before walking up to his bedroom. As he was packing up the last of his things and changing into his pyjamas Draco noticed an unopened letter. Confused Draco picked up the letter and examined it and noticed the House of Malfoy seal on the letter. Draco opened the letter thinking that it was one from his mother but he was sorely mistaken.
The letter read.
Draco,
I am now aware of your new found habits. I do not appreciate you destroying the image of the Malfoy family. I raised you better than this.
Furthermore, I have also seen you gallivanting around with the Potter boy. This is disgusting and vile behaviour and I will not allow it. Until you decide to renounce this ideology I will not allow you back into my home.
Do not come back for Christmas. If you do not stop this behaviour in coming weeks expect to be disowned. Remember I am always watching.
Signed
Lucius Malfoy
Draco read the letter over no less than 5 times before it had finally hit him. Father found out about him being gay. But how? Draco couldn’t seem to wrap his head around who could have told him. Blaise and Pansy couldn’t have and they absolutely adored Harry.
The spiralling panic started only moments later. Millions of thoughts poured into Draco's head and he couldn’t process anything. He didn’t know what to do. Does he keep it to himself? Does he call Harry? Does he go home anyway? And what about his mother? Was his mother safe? Between the sheer panic and the spinning in his head Draco found himself compelled to go to the Lupins for help. Sirius and Remus would know what to do. They always do.
What felt like moments later Draco found himself at the door to Sirius and Remus’ quarters. He knocked on the door and Sirius came to answer it assuming he knew who it was, “Prongs? Oh good I think you-” Sirius stopped himself seeing his student and son's friend in the doorway. “Are you alright Draco? Shouldn’t you be preparing to leave tomorrow?
“Can- Can I come inside?” Draco asked on the verge of tears. Sirius nodded hastily and let him in. He sat him down on the couch and sat next to him.
“What happened, Draco?” He asked the young boy.
“I- uh- My dad sent me a letter today. Professor.” Draco looked down fiddling with the letter in his hands.
“What did it say? If you don’t mind me asking?” Sirius looked confused on the outside but on the inside he hoped that it wasn’t what he thought it was.
Draco hung his head as he felt tears rolling down his cheeks. He held out the letter to Sirius, “Here, you can read it.”
Sirius took a moment and scanned the letter. Once his was finished, rage flashed forward. Draco picked up on this and quickly grabbed the letter trying to head for the door. “I’m sorry Professor. I can just deal with this on my-”
Sirius, who caught himself, put on a kind smile and came between Draco and the door. “Draco. I’m not mad at you. This is not your fault at all. I am mad at your father, but I am not mad at you. I would love to devise a plan with how to help you moving forward.”
Draco who had now sat back down on the couch had tears coming to his eyes, “Really? Oh, thank you professor I was, I um-” Draco stopped because now he had started sobbing.
Once Sirius saw Dracos sobbed thank yous he felt his heart crack in two. Yet again there would be another generation destroyed by the cruelty of the pureblood obsession. Sirius sat next to the boy and flicked up a silencing charm. He knew that Alexander, Remus and Hermione were in the house and didn’t want so many people there to witness Draco break down. Afterwards he scooted closer and asked, “Would you like a hug Draco?”
Draco with his lip quivering nodded, “Yes, please,” Sirius asked no more and pulled Draco into a hug, allowing his sobs to be deafened by his shoulder. After a couple of minutes Draco moved away,
“Sorry sir.” He said, wiping his face.
“It’s not a problem,” Sirius waved his wand and the wet spot on Sirius’ sweater was gone, “Thats what magic is for. And we are no longer in school. Call me Sirius please.”
Draco nodded, “Wha- what- what are you going to do now?” Draco's eyes darted between the coffee table, the letter in his hand and Sirius who smiled, “Well first we are going to get your things.” Sirius flicked his wand and Dracos things appeared infront of him. “Then we are going to go to bed. TOmorrow morning we can discuss what to do moving forward with Mr.Lupin and Professor McGonagall..”
Draco nodded through the whole explanation. Once Sirius was done Draco looked up, “Thank you… Sirius.”
Sirius smiled, “It’s not a problem Draco. Help will always be given to those at Hogwarts.
Draco yawned, stretching his arms out and blinking his sleepy eyes.
Sirius chuckled, “Lets go to bed. Come one. I’ll show you our spare room.
