Friends, Circe's instructions were clear
No matter what we hear
We see Spider-Man, in his full suit with his mask on, addressing several other Spider-People in front of a Spider-Verse portal. This continues through the next lines.
Full speed ahead
Until we find the prophet
My comrades, this land confuses your mind
So no matter who we find
Full speed ahead, until we find the prophet
Good
As the music drops, they enter the portal, and the scene shifts clearly into a dark and dreary one. Fog starts to curl unnaturally around their ankles, and there is also a clear shift in body language.
All I hear are screams, every time I dare to close my eyes
With the above line, the “camera” focuses on Peter. His Spider-Sense is going off, but seems incredibly spooked and ignores it. This body language continues throughout the next lines.
I no longer dream, only nightmares of those who've died.
Nothing's what it seems.
Nothing's what it seems.
For the above line, we look at the other Spider-People for a second. They look just as spooked and nervous as Peter.
And here in The Underworld, the past seems close behind
The Camera returns to Peter.
This land confuses your mind
After this line, the Fog quickly covers Peter and then dissipates, revealing that Peter is without the other Spiders and is surrounded by a crowd of people who have visible injuries and seem to be ghosts or shades.
When does a man become a monster?
558 civilians who died when you failed to save them…
Peter is surrounded by civilians she failed to save. We see first responders, office workers, people in work and school uniforms, construction workers, unhoused people, and sick-looking children. It's a wide variety of people.
SPIDEY!
SPIDEY!
SPIDEY!
SPIDEY!
The mass of people starts to reach out to him in desperation.
How could you fail to save us all when we were right in front of you?
All I hear are screams, Peter is clearly devastated and frozen looking around with wide, scared eyes, the people keep reaching and pushing every time I dare to close my eyes.
I no longer dream, Peter tries to back away only to be grabbed by other spirits only nightmares of those who've died.
Nothing's what it seems several of the children are suddenly at his feet, grabbing his arms and suit. They look excited rather than angry or sad.
Nothing's what it seems!
But in The Underworld, the past seems close behind Peter manages to push the child spirits away and through a bit of the crowd.
I keep thinking of the child from that night… In the distance, Peter sees a little girl, the little girl Mephisto took the form of during One More Day. His and Mary Jane’s future daughter, now doomed to never be born in the main universe.
I keep thinking of the child from that night…
Peter runs through the crowd trying to reach the girl, but once he gets past the spirits, Peter is on the top of the Brooklyn Bridge.
This life is amazing when you greet it with open arms
Peter turns as the voice sings. Standing there is Gwen Stacy in the outfit she died in
Gwen…
Peter reaches up and removes his mask, he looks utterly devastated.
Whatever we face, we'll be fine if we're leading from the heart.
No matter the place, we can light up the world.
Here's how to start:
Greet the world with open arms.
Gwen dances around the bridge during these lines, holding both his hands and smiling widely, dragging Peter along with her until they reach the edge of the bridge.
Greet the world with open arms.
Gwen is still smiling brightly as her head falls to the side, displaying her broken neck, and fades away.
Gwen…
The Camera focuses on Peter’s face, tears are threatening to fall from his eyes, but we can no longer see the background.
Waiting
That voice, it can't be…
Peter turns and we are now in a small home. We see Uncle Ben sitting on a staircase, staring where the door would be, holding a pair of glasses. Peter’s glasses from before the spider bite.
Waiting
Uncle Ben?
Peter is clearly in shock.
Waiting
Peter, when you come home I'll be waiting.
Even if you're the last thing I see, I'll be waiting
I'm right here, Ben
Waiting
Can't you see? I'm
Waiting
During the above lines, Peter runs and kneels in front of Ben. Ben does not seem to see him, even as Peter reaches out to put his hands over his Uncle’s.
I took too long
I'll always love you.
We see blood start to spread across Uncle Ben’s chest from a single spot near his heart.
And ventured too far.
I'll stay in your heart.
While you were
Waiting, waiting, waiting
Uncle Ben fades away, leaving Peter alone. He’s crying now.
Bye, Ben...
Before Peter can gather himself, hands are surrounding him and pulling him to his feet. He’s once again surrounded by spirits.
All I hear are screams.
All I hear are screams.
Every time I dare to close my eyes.
I no longer dream
I no longer dream
Only nightmares of those who've died
Nothing's what it seems.
Nothing's what it seems.
This time, Peter is surrounded by dead friends, family, allies, and enemies. Many of them have the injuries that killed them visible. He tries to fight his way past them but is unable to ignore them.
We see George Stacy, Jean DeWolff, the Osborns, Ben Reilly, Kaine Parker, Ned Leeds, Kraven, Mysterio, Dr. Octopus, and Ms. Marvel. I’d also include some lesser-known characters who still impacted Peter greatly, like the first Jackpot (Alana Jobson), Joe Face (one of his informants), Tim Harrison (The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man), Mattie Franklin (the 3rd Spider-Woman), and Charlemagne (who committed suicide by Spidey).
But in The Underworld, your past is always close behind
At this point, Peter sees his potential daughter again in the distance.
Your past is always close behind.
Down in The Underworld
He pushes through the crowd of spirits, hand outstretched, reaching for Mayday/Annie/Claire, but when he breaks through, she is gone once again. All the spirits disappear as the music drops, leaving Peter alone as the song ends.
