It was a crisp winter morning in the little English village that nestled between newly snow-capped hills.
The sun peeked over the rooftops, making the freshly fallen snow sparkle like a sea of tiny diamonds. Snowflakes still floated lazily in the air, and the world seemed wrapped in a blanket of white fuzziness.
For Alpine, a young fluffy white cat with big, curious blue eyes, this was a day of wonder - her very first snowfall.
Alpine perched on the windowsill in the upstairs bedroom of Zemo and Bucky’s country cottage. Her little pink nose was pressed up against the cold glass. She gazed out, amazed to see that her village had been transformed into a magical winter wonderland. The cobblestone paths were dusted with snow, and icicles hung like crystal chandeliers from the eaves of houses. She twitched her whiskers in excitement. Today, she decided, was the perfect day to explore.
She leapt lightly from the windowsill and went downstairs to find Bucky. He was in the kitchen with Zemo, enjoying his breakfast. She wound around their feet a couple of times, rubbing against their calves, before trotting out of the cat flap.
Bucky looked over at Zemo and smiled. “Her first snowy adventure,” he said, and they both got up to watch her stomp slowly through the garden and stop at every new frosty delight to have a contemplative sniff.
Zemo wrapped his arms around Bucky as they watched her disappear over the garden wall.
Paws crunching softly in the snow, Alpine padded through the village. She marveled at the way her paw prints appeared, perfect little patterns, and how the snow tickled her toes. A gust of wind sent a flurry of snowflakes swirling around her, and she pounced playfully, trying to catch them.
Her big blue eyes sparkled with delight as she leapt and spun, her eyes the exact same colour of the sky above, her fur blending seamlessly with the snow.
As she wandered further, Alpine came across the village bakery. The warm smell of freshly baked bread and cinnamon rolls wafted out, making her whiskers twitch. She stood on her hind legs to peek through the frosted window and saw the baker, a kindly old man, sprinkling powdered sugar on a tray of pastries. He spotted her and chuckled, opening the door to toss her a small piece of warm croissant. Alpine mewed softly and scoffed her treat before continuing her journey.
Next, Alpine found herself near the frozen village pond. A group of children were skating, their laughter echoing in the crisp air. Curious, she tiptoed closer, her reflection shimmering on the ice.
One child noticed her and waved, stopping to make a little snowball and roll it gently in her direction. Alpine batted it with her paw, sending it skittering across the ice. Alpine gave a little happy purr, enjoying the game. The child chuckled, and went back to join her friends.
As the day went on, Alpine discovered more delights.
She sniffed at snow-covered bushes, startled a flurry of sparrows from a tree, and even climbed a low branch to get a better view of the village. Everything seemed magical in the snowy landscape, and Alpine felt like the queen of her own winter kingdom.
Just as the sun began to dip towards the horizon, painting the sky in shades of pink and gold, Alpine heard a soft meow. She turned to see another cat, a tabby with stripes like a warm patchwork quilt, watching her from atop a stone wall. The tabby’s green eyes sparkled with mischief, and a playful grin spread across her face.
"Hello," said the tabby, hopping down to join her. "I’m Luna. Want to play?"
Alpine’s tail flicked with excitement. "I’m Alpine. Let’s!"
Together, the two cats raced through the snow, chasing each other’s tails and pouncing into soft snowdrifts. They took turns hiding behind snow-covered barrels and ambushing each other, their playful yowls echoing through the village. The world around them glowed softly in the twilight, and Alpine couldn’t remember a day she had enjoyed more.
When the stars began to twinkle in the darkening sky, Alpine and Luna finally settled under the warm engine of a just-parked car, and watched a patch of snow sparkle beneath a lamppost. Their breaths puffed in little clouds, and their fur was dusted with frost, but their hearts were warm.
"This was the best day ever," Luna purred.
Alpine nodded. "And tomorrow will be even better."
One by one, the windows in the village glowed with light, casting warm patterns over the snowy streets. Luna rubbed her head against Alpine and they purred contentedly. Alpine had found a new friend, and with Luna by her side, every day would be magical - no matter the season.
