Chapter Six

  • "You seem nervous Agent Ward." "I'm calling to mind my training. There's no way I'm gonna reveal classified secrets to a girl who's hell-bent on taking us down." "Have you ever killed anyone?" "Yes, a few. High-risk targets. But they were terrible people who were trying to murder nice people. And I didn't feel good afterwards." "And does your grandmother know about these things?" "Gramzy?" ―Skye and Grant Ward

Daisy: laughs lightly, shaking her head "Oh, I remember that conversation. Grant trying to act all tough while Skye just cuts right through him with a simple question. He’s never been good at being vulnerable, but at least he didn’t lie about the kills... not that it makes him any better."

Fitz: glances at the others, uneasy "Grant never seemed like the type to be uncomfortable with violence, but hearing him admit to it... It’s one thing to kill for self-defense, but quite another to justify it as ‘high-risk targets.’ His moral compass is... questionable at best."

Jemma: sighs "It’s always strange to hear someone like Ward admit to something so... personal. But you can tell, even though he’s trying to sound matter-of-fact, it bothers him. I don’t think he’s as confident in his actions as he wants everyone to believe."

Mack: frowns, shaking his head "Grant’s whole ‘I’m just doing my job’ act doesn’t fool anyone. You can tell he’s hiding something when he gets too defensive. But, uh, the whole grandma question? That was unexpected... and hilarious."

Yo-Yo: smirks "Honestly, I’ve never seen Ward so shaken before. He can talk all tough about killing people, but Skye hits him with one question about his grandma and it trips him up. It’s like he didn’t even know how to respond."

Bobbi: raises an eyebrow, amused "‘Gramzy’? Is that what he calls her? Classic. You can see the walls come down when Skye puts him on the spot like that. It's like he doesn't want to face the reality of what he’s done, so he hides behind this tough exterior."

Hunter: grins "Oh, that was priceless. Grant's all tough guy, but Skye hits him with the one thing he can’t answer, and he just... freezes. I swear, it’s like he was waiting for a script. Too bad there’s no ‘grammy defense’ in the manual."

Grant: snorts, a little defensive "It’s not like it matters. If you’ve never been in the field, you don’t understand what it takes. The world isn’t black and white, no matter how much you want it to be. But yeah, sure, I have a grandma. She’s not part of this, though."

Coulson: gently "People like Grant—people who’ve been in situations like that—tend to bury their emotions and their past. It’s easier for them to compartmentalize. But Skye wasn’t letting him hide behind his walls. It’s hard to face your actions when someone’s forcing you to acknowledge them."

May: voice steady, eyes narrowing "Ward’s defense mechanisms are as predictable as ever. He tries to control the situation, but Skye catches him off guard. It’s always been the same with him: he wants to project strength, but when the real questions hit, he crumbles."

Kora: laughs "Gramzy? That was a moment. Ward tries to sound like a cold-blooded killer, but then Skye brings up his grandma, and it’s like she hit him with a wrecking ball. It’s funny how those little details can make the tough guy freeze."

Lincoln: shakes his head, looking uncomfortable "There’s a disconnect with people like Ward. They try to justify their actions with these moral excuses, but when you dig into it—when you force them to confront their reality—they’re not as tough as they pretend to be."

Trip: grins, shaking his head "I mean, come on, ‘Gramzy’? That was too good. Ward’s so used to being the one who asks the tough questions, he never expects them to come back at him like that. Skye had him rattled with just a word."

Daniel: frowns, speaking seriously "Grant’s a product of his circumstances, but that doesn’t mean he’s without responsibility. It's easy to hide behind the ‘I was just doing my job’ excuse, but at some point, you have to face the consequences of your actions. Skye did what none of us had the chance to—made him look at himself."
