Falling into Place
They all shrunk as they entered the Quantum Realm, and split off at different intervals, going to a different place, at a different time in history.
The first group, which consisted of Tony, Steve, Bruce, Scott, and now Evie, traveled to New York in 2012.
Over in a back alley, they all materialized right in the middle of the Battle of New York. The sound of the Chitauri snarling and yelping filled the air as did the smoke and dust trying to settle with a war raging on. The nanotech in their suits retracted, revealing their disguises as Steve issued his orders.
“All right, we all have our assignments. Two Stones uptown, one Stone, down. Stay low. Keep an eye on the clock.” 2012 Hulk passed by them, smashing a Chiratui with a small car before stomping off. Bruce put a hand to his face, embarrassed of his former self. “Feel free to smash a few things along the way.” Steve said, giving him a pointed look.
Unamused Banner replied, “I think it's gratuitous, but whatever.” Tearing off his shirt before going into the street, he pretended to smash things in a sarcastic way as he went in the direction of the Sanctum Sanctorum.
Steve on the other hand, took off in trot heading north while Evie snuck off with Tony and Scott, using her magic to change hers and Tony’s appearance to appear as SHIELD agents in S.W.A.T. gear after she discreetly guided them into the Avengers Tower by traveling the shadows. They quickly headed straight to the penthouse suite just moments before Loki fell into an involuntary nap.
As they crept around the back, Evie’s heart stopped when she heard that long missed voice.
“If it's all the same to you... I'll have that drink now.” Her younger self snapped at his audacity and willed a piece of marble countertop to her hands before bashing him over the head with it.
“Are we sure this is the guy your daughter fell madly in love with?” Scott asked Tony, as her dad placed a hand on her shoulder.
“You're up, miss... Also uh, Mr. Rogers. I almost forgot that that suit did nothing for your ass.”
Evie took a deep breath before biting back a giggle at her dad’s observation. Momentarily distracting her of her longing while Steve and Tony bikered about the other’s rear end. Only for a tiny Scott to confidently proclaim, “I think you look great, Cap. As far as I'm concerned, that's America's ass.” Doing a patriotic salute in the process.
Evie tuned out the distractions around her and directed her attention to enchanting her younger self, who was currently sitting down and trying to manage her bad temper. Moving cautiously to avoid startling her younger counterpart, Evie possessed her mind. Placing strategic barriers in place as she took over momentarily. Steve from the past moved to the elevators and he called out his position to the other SHIELD agents saying, “on my way down to coordinate search and rescue.”
As Agent Rumlow packed the glow stick away, Rogers was instantly getting mocked by Loki who even took on his appearance. Originally Evie had stayed back to escort Loki, but here she gently whispered to her former self. I’ll go with Steve, I can help find people faster… The then twenty one year old suddenly had a change in demeanor.
“I’ll go with Steve, I can find people faster and get them out just as quickly.”
The younger Tony Stark wrinkled his nose at his kid, “um… okay? I mean yeah sure, go. Just please for the love of god… You’d tell me if you have a crush on him right, kiddo?” The other Evie rolled her eyes so hard even she had to give her props on the overly dramatic gesture. With the other Evie out of the way and far enough not to detect the time-travelers, they fell into position.
“All right, you're up, little buddy, there's our stone.” Tony quipped.
“Alright. Flick me.” She used her powers to send Lang on a guided flight towards the briefcase housing the Tesseract before the other Tony packed it up. Her dad morphed back into the current Iron Man suit and lept out the window leaving her stranded.
“Fuck… DAD!” She whisper-yelled. But the voice that called out made her freeze just as she was about to jump out the window too.
“Hey you, agent! Aren’t you here to help escort the prisoner?”
Of all the luck in the universe…
Quickly placing the goggles over her face she rushed by her past dad with her head down and fell into formation, muttering, “right away sir!”
Underneath the helmet she was sweating bullets. Pressing her body to the farthest corner of the elevator. She made a mental reminder to herself to properly chew her dad out once it was all over. Her eyes were fixed on the back of Loki's head as he smirked and waved at Hulk while the others shooed him away, insisting that it was full. In her wound up mix of anxiety, heartache, and slight joy Evie failed to remember Loki was very much able to tap into other people’s minds just as well as she could.
As if some strange voice spoke to him, Loki started to turn around.
Instantly she dropped her gaze and kept telling herself that this wasn’t her Loki. That even if she managed to somehow get a few seconds alone with him that there would be no chance in high hell things would turn in her favor. After all, life didn’t pan out like in the movies.
Evie willed her body to behave normally as they descended the tower, praying he wouldn’t out her as a foreigner in their midst. She soon heard over her private comms that Steve was about to intercept the specter in a different elevator with instructions to regroup at the lobby.
With a ding, they’d arrived at ground level and as Tony and Thor from the past stepped out first, she followed right behind Loki. Still avoiding his curious stare by staying in his blind spot.
As soon as she made out her dad from the present, she broke off from the crew to pinch his side viciously. He grunted, trying to both not yelp and chuckle at the distress he’d put her through. “What hell was that for!?” She hissed through clenched teeth. He simply winked as he called over to Scott.
“Thumbelina, do you copy? I've got eyes on the prize. It is go-time.”
As the microscopic Lang made his way into Tony’s reactor, Evie couldn't resist taking a glance at the Asgardian dressed in green, gold, and the finest leather in all the realms. Just then, the 2012 crew was intercepted by the undercover leader of Hydra, Secretary Pierce, along with his minions. A full-blown dick measuring contest erupted regarding who had jurisdiction over the Tesseract and the Asgardian prince, who was in chains.
Loki, lost in thought, wished he had attempted his world domination scheme 200 years earlier. Back then, there wouldn’t have been anyone capable of stopping him. There was certainly no Man of Iron or their insufferable daughters, known for their fierce temperaments and captivating beauty. That thought made him pause and shift his focus. However, what he didn’t realize was that if he had pursued his plan two centuries ago, he would have never met Evie. But that didn't matter at the moment; he couldn't see into the future—that was more his mother’s talent.
Somewhere among the stars, Frigga was painfully aware of Evie, the fiery comet currently dodging her son’s orbit. At the mere mention of Odin by his brother, Loki rolled his eyes, only to find that her gaze was locked onto his.
Evie instantly went rigid at the sight of the towering god. Her expression became mournful and conflicted. Loki clearly heard a broken sound escape her lips. In that moment, the same girl who had been so determined to kill him suddenly called out softly, “Loki...” She was looking at him as if she knew him intimately. As if he meant something significant to her. But how? And why?
Loki is… Well. He’s beyond confused.
Not that he would alert anyone about it, but something else was happening. It was crystal clear from the chaos and the mysterious magical slide of the tesseract's case (right after the Man of Iron collapsed and started to convulse) that someone was trying to rewrite the story of this day. This woman, however, was the most puzzling part of it all.
It’s rare to hear someone say his name so kindly, so gently. Loki looked at her and then behind him, raising his brows as he gestured to himself with his chained hands. But in the mere seconds he took his eyes off her, she had transformed. No longer hidden behind SWAT gear, Evie now wore her Void suit, the only difference being the absence of her face covering. But Loki knew that there was more to it. This wasn’t the same girl who had broken a stone over his head. She was older, wiser, and still held his gaze as if he were the most precious creature she had ever seen. A stark contrast to the hellfire he had witnessed before when they fought in her father’s lounge.
Then her feet began to move without her brain's permission... almost.
“No, no,” Tony said, his tone warning. Her dad seemed to sense that her resolve was starting to waver. “No, come on, kiddo, don’t—” He placed an arm around her, physically stopping her from taking a step forward. That’s when Loki noticed something: a glimmer of gold around her neck. He followed the delicate chain and realized it was a very well-known artifact, his mother’s pendant. Frigga’s medallion of the Yggdrasil tree, adorned with different colored gems representing each of the nine realms. Loki's mind raced as he tried to piece together how she managed to have it. It was his. It was supposed to be secured in his personal vault back on Asgard. His mother had gifted it to him long ago, intending for him to pass it down to his bride should he ever decide to start a family of his own.
Evie’s mesmerism broke and she stomped out her emotions, regaining her composure. The mission was above herself or her selfish wants. Yet the moment she started to walk away with Tony and Scott in tow, 2012 Hulk made his appearance slamming the door to the stairwell open with a ferocious roar. It clocked them square in the face, sending them tumbling to the floor. Shattering the briefcase on its hinges.
With wide eyes she tried to reach out, to use her abilities to will it back towards them. The cube, hot and azure, pulsing with cosmic power, slid back across the floor like a terribly ill-timed and dangerous game of air-hockey. But it wasn’t working. Her breath caught in her throat as it collided with a boot belonging to man of mischief himself.
Another exchange of glances happened between the two of them. And then, Loki bent down to snatch it up. Evie yelped, sputtering out an embarrassing mash of both ‘no’ and ‘stop.’ And yet; all at once, Loki was gone.
At the other end of the lobby, Thor had just gently zapped Tony’s reactor with his trusty hammer causing the chaos to subside in time for him to notice that his brother and the Tesseract were gone. Ant-Man was the first to break the heavy silence between them.
“That wasn't supposed to happen, was it?”
“Oh, we blew it.” Tony muttered in defeat.
Before anything else could happen, Evie seized the opportunity presented by the latest distraction. With Lang nestled in Tony’s tactical vest, Evie lunged forward, grasped her dad, and summoned a black cloak of smoke to transport them back into the alley.
It wasn’t long after that they heard Steve confirm he’d gotten the scepter, just for trouble to find him too. The three of them heard him utter, “oh, you gotta be shitting me,” shortly after asking them for the cube.
Her brows furrowed together as she closed her eyes, trying to locate him. Her mind scanned the entire building until she came across two Mr. Rogers dueling over Loki's scepter. She knew neither would relent, so she sent a message to Steve, and he understood it loud and clear. She heard him tell his younger self, “Bucky-is... alive,” causing the other Steve to falter and break his chokehold. This allowed their Steve to put him to sleep using the scepter.
As soon as he was up and preparing to join them, Evie stayed in his mind long enough to witness him appreciating his own posterior. He proudly proclaimed, “That is America's ass,” seemingly to himself, but Evie already had plans to tease him mercilessly about it.
As they waited for Steve to join them at the rendezvous point, they went to sit patiently in an abandoned vichele trying to figure out how to repair the fuck up. As if he himself had Evie’s ability to read minds Tony spoke up, splitting the tension.
“Sweetheart, I know what you're thinking… this isn’t anyone's fault.”
“Yeah, E. Don’t beat yourself up, we all dropped the ball on this one…” Her dad gapped at Lang before shooting him a slight glare.
“Blame game aside, we need to start thinking of what to do and fast before star-spangled ass gets here.” Evie mumbled into her arms where she had buried her head.
Just then the man in question jumped down from the fire escape on their left.
“Cap!” He turned around to see their faces of defeat. “Sorry, buddy. We got a problem.”
Scott scuffed at the older Stark’s words, “Yeah, we do!”
Evie was already chewing on her nails. One brief yet highly uncomfortable rundown later Steve stood exasperated with one hand on his hip and the other clutching the shield. “Well, what are we gonna do now?”
Tony sighed loudly, “you know what? Give me a break, Steve. I just got hit in the head with the Hulk.” Ant-man who was pacing a hole into the ground scuffed again.
“You said that we had one shot. This– this was our shot. We shot it. It's shot. Six stones or nothing. Six stones or nothing–”
“You're repeating yourself, you know that? You're repeating yourself.” Tony chided.
Scott was spiraling as he shouted, “You're repeating yourself. You're repeating yourself!” Evie buried her face in her hands, sighing deeply. She'd had enough of their bickering and her brain was quickly approaching a migraine.
“Dude, come on.” But Scott was feeling desperate and at his wit's end.
“You know– No! You never wanted a time heist, neither of you. Then you went on board with the time heist–”
“Fine. I dropped the ball, is that what you wanna hear?”
“You ruined the time heist!”
Evie was about to say something but instead shut her mouth as irritation started to set in. Steve took a step forward and Tony got out of the car, both men looked at her cautiously. Meanwhile Lang was secretly wishing he could shrink out of existence with the murder glare she was giving him.
“Is that what I did?” Tony bit back. Still putting up a tough persona Scott shot back, “yeah!”
The two men squabbling abruptly yelped out “ow!” When the intrusive sensation of getting their ear yanked took them by surprise. Steve then decided to squash the child-like argument.
“Enough, all of you. Tony, are there any other options with the Tesseract?”
“No, no, no. There's no other option. There's no do-overs. We're not going anywhere else. We have one particle left. Each. That's it, alright? We use that– Bye, bye. You're not going home.” Scott proclaimed, interrupting Tony. Per usual, Steve wasn’t giving up so easily.
“Yeah, well if we don't try, then no one else is going home, either.”
Evie was just about to see if perhaps there was a way to reach her friends, and possibly even speak with one mystical bird skeleton from ancient Egyptian times who loved to annoy her to no end when Tony had an epiphany.
“I got it. There's another way. To retake the Tesseract and acquire new particles.” He got out of the car and made his way towards Cap. “We'll stroll down memory lane. Military installation, Garden State.”
As Rogers came to the same conclusion, Evie felt Scott stir beside her. Not at all happy they were being left out. But in really, it was just him.
“When were they both there?”
“They were there at a time… I have a vaguely exact idea.”
Steve's face showed his disbelief, “how vague?”
“What are you talking about? Where are we going?” Scott interjected, anxiety still well above healthy levels. Her dad and Steve continued to talk, completely ignoring him. “I know for a fact they were there–”
“Who's they? What are we doing?” Lang was seconds away from completely melting into a panic attack.
“And I know how I know.” Tony stated confidently.
“Guys, what's up? What is it?”
Evie placed her hand on Lang’s forehead, “chill. Relax… give em’ a minute.” Emitting the feeling of ease to placate Ant-Man enough that he wouldn’t run the risk of having an aneurysm right there on the street in 2012. Steve glanced around the area to ensure no one was nosing around.
“Well, it looks like we're improvising.”
Suddenly feeling a lot less angsty and at ease, Ant-man cooly said, “right. What are we improvising?”
Steve marched right up to them. “Scott, get this back to the compound.” Shoving the scepter into Lang’s hands, he looked to Evie and then back to Tony, “she’s sticking with us.”
Her dad met them halfway saying, “suit up.”
Doing as told, the three activated their time-travel suits while Scott asked what was in New Jersey. Tony; adamantly ignoring the guy, muttered out the date for them to set their chronological GPS.
“0-4, 0-7, 1-9-7-0.”
The other two coming along repeated the numbers as they punched them in too.
“Excuse me…” Lang tried once more.
Steve couldn’t help but ask, “are you sure?” Searching Tony deeply. But her dad was cut off before he could answer.
“Cap! Captain... Steve, sorry, America? Rogers. Look, if you do this, and this doesn't work, you're not coming back.” Sucking in a staggered breath Tony yelled back, “Thanks for the pep talk, pissant.” He then went back to Steve, “you trust me?”
“I do,” he said without hesitating. Evie smiled warmly at them, “your call, Stevie.”
“Here we go.”
Pushing in the activation sequence the three disappeared from the alley leaving Scott dumbfounded and with no other option than to go home with the Mind Stone secured.
70’s music was pouring from a nearby radio as Evie had her back to Steve and Tony. They all found some clothes to change into to help blend in the current fashions and uniforms. Rogers being the gentleman that he was, had found some creates to use as a makeshift room divider to give her more privacy. Something both Starks appreciated. Wearing a navy blue womens secretary uniform, black ankle strap heels, and her hair in a modest updo. Evie followed both of them out as Tony asked if this; Camp Lehigh, really was the place where Captain America was born.
“The idea of me was.” Steve clarified.
“Right. Well, imagine you're SHIELD, running a quasi-fascistic intelligence organization. Where do you hide it?” Tony asked while his daughter was trying to discreetly use her magic to scout the base.
“In plain sight.” Steve said neutrally motioning towards a bunker where two other men in suits were sneaking into. Tony, using his tech-enhanced shades, scanned the little bunker and found their heat signatures going deep underground in a secret elevator. Something Evie’s abilities confirmed when she picked up a few more people within the subterranean levels.
After managing to slip inside the lower levels by magic, they split into two teams. Both Starks sticking together while Steve went to fetch the PYM Particles. Leaving the Tesseract for the genius-billionaire duo to obtain. After traveling in the shadows once more, they stepped out into a lab-storage area of some kind.
Tony quickly walked down the hallways scanning for the power source with Evie on high alert for anyone who could potentially walk in on them. Eventually she stood guard as he used his Iron gauntlet to torch and cut through the locks. When the steel casing opened up he joyfully sighed, “gotcha. Back in the game!” She quickly threw some files off a briefcase someone had left behind before emptying its contents to the floor.
“Here. In here use this, dad.” As he placed the glowing cube into the case, someone from down the hall started to shout.
“Arnim, you in there? Arnim?”
They froze and right as Evie was gonna grab her dad’s hand, in came none other than her grandfather. The illustrious and enigmatic Howard Stark.
Like deers in headlights, they stood still before Tony spun on his heels to hightail it out.
“Hey!” He called out, “door's this way, pal.”
He turned back to see his daughter’s look of ‘WTF?!’ before breathing out, “oh! Yeah…”
As they got closer to Howard Stark, he addressed Tony. “I'm looking for Dr. Zola. Have you seen him?”
“Yeah, no, Dr. Zola. I haven't seen a soul.” Awkwardly, Tony bumped into Evie, who in turn bumped into a chair. He caught her mumbling, “pardon me,” to both her and his father. Howard looked at her dad with narrowed eyes, “do I know you?”
Sitting the case down on the chair, Tony replied with, “no, sir. I'm a–a visitor from MIT. We! We both are.”
The head of the Stark family tree darted between the two, “Huh. MIT. Got a name?”
He stuttered, “Uh, um… Howard.” The real Howard took a few steps closer, “well, that'll be easy to remember.” Tony, still reeling from the massive trip he was experiencing, sputtered again. Blurting, “Howard… Potts.”
“And the lady?”
They both turned to look at her and she smiled warmly, “Genevieve… I’m his sec-”
“Daughter, she’s my daughter,” Tony boasted loftily, suddenly standing a bit straighter as he finally got the chance to present his kid to his own dad.
“Well, I’m Howard Stark.” The senior Stark went to shake hands and Evie knew her dad was having a major moment here. But Tony fumbled the shake and accidently took Howard’s finger instead. “Hi.” Her grandfather looked down amusedly saying, “shake it, don't pull it.” Earning himself a nervous laughter from both his heirs.
“You look a little green around the gills there, Potts.” Evie quickly tried to intervene.
“I’m sorry, my dad here has been working some long hours.”
“Wanna go get some air?” He looked at Tony who couldn't make his brain compute faster, “hello? Potts?”
She pinched her dad making him jump as she kept the same sweet smile for her grandfather. “Yeah. That would be swell.” He finally managed to say, moving towards the exit. Tony was so caught up in the moment he was almost forgetting something vital.
“Need your briefcase?” He once again chuckled sheepishly as he took it from his father who had an eyebrow raised, before passing it down to Evie. “You're not one of those beatniks, are ya, Potts?” This spurred yet another nervous laugh from Tony who instantly denied the accusation.
They went in silence as she transmitted the soothing feeling of tranquility to stabilize her dad’s heartbeat. And by the time they reached the elevators, Tony was feeling more in control of his bearing.
“So, flowers and sauerkraut. You got a big date tonight?”
Her grandfather lifted the sauerkraut first, “my wife's expecting. And, uh– Too much time in the office.” Both father and daughter made a face, mentally calculating that it was roughly a month or so before Tony was born, when he said, “congratulations.”
“Thanks. Hold this, will you?” He passed off the gifts for her dad to hold, who answered with, “yeah, sure. How far along is she?” It was then that Evie knew he really was spending too much time with work. The family curse apparently.
“I don't know. She…” he tried measuring an invisible belly before giving up and adjusting his tie. “She's at the point where she can't stand the sound of my chewing. I guess I'll be eating dinner in the pantry again.”
“I have two little girls.”
Her grandfather smirked as he threw her a knowing look. “Well, Miss Genevieve might object to that statement.” Tony, shook his head, sheepishly smiling and nudging his daughter. “No, Evie here is actually the oldest. The youngest is four.”
“Wow, that's quite the age gap.” He said, finally happy with the way his tie looked. “A girl would be nice. Less of a chance she'd turn out exactly like me.”
Her dad was muddled. “What'd be so awful about that?” As they reached their level and Howard made himself a bit more comfortable he cooly said, “let's just say that the greater good has rarely outweighed my own self-interests.” Unknowingly he patted his adult son on the shoulder before leading them out. Once they reached sunlight Tony asked another question.
“So, where are you at with names?”
“Well, if it's a boy, my wife likes Elmonzo. Selene if it's a girl.” Evie looked to her dad in awe. Finally knowing the full source of how her dad put her full name together.
“Huh, Might wanna let that stew awhile. You got time.” Tony replied coolly.
She spotted Steve over by some army trucks giving them a thumbs up. Excusing herself she let the two share a private conversation under the pretense that she was going to meet up with a friend, leaving them alone.
When she reached Steve, she wiggled her eyebrows suggestively while holding up the briefcase and a dazzling smile. “Ugh thank god.” He breathed out in relief. “What’s Tony doing?” She turned and sweetly gazed at the scene before her.
“He is having a much needed chat with someone special. Let's just give him this moment.” When she saw her dad give his old man a hug, she knew he had come full circle.
After finding a good place in which to hide the three typed in the code that would send them home, using the fresh batch of PYM particles.
As Evie whisked through the psychedelic cosmic space trip back through time, she felt a strange feeling of child-like wonder overcome her. Things seemed to be falling into place.
For once Evie dared let hope bloom.
Unrestricted and unconfined.
